  • Best purchase of my lifetime
Style: Fin Drive
Allow me to say I've purchased a lot of out door things in my lifetime, but dude seriously like all things we buy no matter what reviews say u are always sceptical ,but upon receiving this kayak it came in a super strong sturdy box which even surprised the Amazon guy cause he says kayaks usually come in a clear bag .Inside each side of the kayak were inside these super large gray pull string like duffel bags..Upon pulling everything out the quality of this unit was the first thing that grabbed my attention.WOW ALLL STURDY ,STRONG AND GREATLY MADE PARTS.Everything was already built in except the peddles and the rudder ,but everything else was already PUT together .The peddles and all were already built just needed to put them inside the kayak .Secondly all the Bungees etc were all connected JUST LIKE U SEE IN THE PIC IS HOW I RECEIVED IT PRETTY MUCH.Your pole holder is inside your dry bag compartment in front of your chair so don't think it's missing and u simply slip it in its spot and lock it in.Don't look on you tube on how to to do the rudder and peddles .The videos suck just go to Reel Yaks .com and they have great videos .Took me no longer then 20 minutes once I got watched the videos .Again guys just an absolute gem of a kayak for the price .The storing and break down of this unit is fantastic .I've took it out twice and the tracking and peddle system had me gliding through a nice size resevoir with no issues. If any of YALL know where Otter Resevoir Is in Antimony Utah know the size of it.It took a lil wind with no issues and cruised through a bit of a white cap with ease.Still need a kayak anchor but for now I'm using one of my ten pound dumbbells.Seriously folks get this kayak,my two buddies have the hobie and they paid in the high 2,000s and they both said if this one would of been out a few years back they woulda bought this one no doubt .9.5 feet is perfect for me which I am 5'9" . THANKS REEL YAKS SERIOUSLY U EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS….So I’ve come back to give u guys and gals a part two ..It has held up amazing for the amount of times I’ve took it out this spring ,summer and fall in fact with climate change the reservoir I fish at is going on year two where the lake isn’t froze over so Ive been able to use it this winter on the lake as well.I wanted to add it takes on the wear and tare so good.I rarely drag it cause it being a two piece with handles each side is like 40 pounds do super light, but the few times I’ve had to over small rocks etc it’s held up great .just wanted to say I will be putting a trolling motor on it next and I’ll be back to let yall know how it worked out.Ill assume now it will do just great .I promise u this IS A MUST BUY ,if u don’t want to have to use trailers and or take up all of your garage cause u cant break it down .This one is different ... show more

  • 6'3" and 250lbs. Stability fine
Style: Propeller Drive
I have nothing but good things to say about this Kayak. This kayak is plenty stable for fishing. No i'm not standing up in it. But I tried to roll it day 1, I lunged to the right and it pitched to a degree and then stopped without capsizing. I also encountered some large wakes. Hitting them straight on with paddle in hand to mitigate rolling potential was unnecessary (still a good idea). The thing that impressed me the most was it's ability to turn on a dime. With rudder hard over and minimal speed, It turned sharply. I have another wider modular same size Kayak. Comparatively if you want to make a hard turn you have to use your paddle. Great Yak! ... show more

  • Game-changer kayak
Style: Fin Drive
This modular kayak has exceeded my expectations. It fits nicely into the back of my compact SUV, snaps together easily, the pedals seem to be of high quality and the seat is very comfortable. I'm in my late seventies and can easily lift the two halves of the yak. This design is a game-changer for me, allowing me to travel to surrounding lakes. Pedaling vs paddling has shown me that with much less effort I'm able to cover more water and my hands are free to fish. I love it. ... show more

  • Decent after modifications and replacement hassles
Style: Fin Drive
Edit: The 3rd replacement package finally came today and contains all the parts I need (the previous two packages did not contain all the parts I needed). So I am increasing my rating from 1 star to 4 stars. The fin assembly can be strengthened or replaced with aftermarket nylon locking nuts + screws (from Lowes) and/or specialty eye bolts (from McMaster); it took me a few weeks to figure out everything though. Original review: Hello, I bought Reel Yaks’ 9.5 ft modular kayak from Amazon. On my first pedal in water, without hitting anything hard, one entire fin assembly disappeared (which included the split ring, the pin / screw assembly that connects with split ring and the bottom brass nut, the brass nut and the rubber fin itself). Please review my attached photos #1 and #2 (the two photos with white paper as background), everything in those two photos fell off and disappeared in water. When I pulled out the fin drive, it came out like photo #3 showed. I will email you those photos. I did check and carefully installed everything before putting the kayak in water. The only possible explanation is that the split ring or / and the pin / screw is broken (otherwise only the rubber fin will fall, but not the metal parts). The kayak without fin drive is not a joy to paddle by hand, even for an experienced kayaker like me. I had to though, because the fin disappeared. I am contacting Reel Yaks for a few replacement assembly (just in case it happens again, I will ask for more than one set), and update here with my results. Otherwise the kayak works fine for the money. If the fin did not fall off, I would rate it at 4 out 5 stars. It did not fit inside our Toyota Camry, but did comfortably fit inside our Acura MDX (SUV). Its rudder system does not feel smooth and precise, but works reasonably well. Tracking and speed of the kayak is consistent with its hull shape and weight - again not great (since it is so wide, flat and heavy) but works reasonably well. I could stand on the kayak in windy weather on a lake, but would not feel comfortable casting hard while standing. Edit: I have emailed Reel Yaks support many times (they needed lots of information, such as Amazon order record, stickers on the packages and the 2nd layer sticker under the 1st layer sticker). They never picked up my phone call. So far, they have sent me two Fedex packages containing replacement parts from China, but they all contained the wrong parts and wrong numbers. I am still missing 4 fins, 2 screws with top holes, 2 split rings and 2 pins. I feel VERY frustrated with this company. I even offered to talk with them in Wechat in Chinese (and in English via cell phone - whatever they prefer), to make it easier for them to communicate. But they never talk with me. ... show more
