  • FINALLY
Edition: Black Edition
The software is wonky but okay, getting it synced to the Switch was odd but that's what instruction manuals are for (though if you wanna skip, hold Y and Start then hold the sync button for 3 seconds, then go to change grip/order) but I literally only got this controller for 1 reason and 1 reason only- The Dpad. I just wanted a quality controller with a good Dpad, and the previous model is too small for my hands. This is exactly what I wanted. And it's PC compatible. AND it's got that sexy 8bitdo retro aesthetic. No HD Rumble or NFC, but that's a solid compromise to me and it still has gyro~ If you need a better Dpad for 2D platformers, fighting games or Tetris, this is a VERY good option even if you don't have a Switch~ ... show more

  • This will connect to switch! Read the directions that it comes with because they're very specific.
Edition: Black Edition
I dont know what the other two reviews are talking about it does connect to the Nintendo switch and it works perfectly. I love this controller so much I was playing hollow knight and smash with it and the controller is so responsive. The dpad is amazing for hollow knight. For those of you having trouble connecting the directions in the boxsaid hold the y button with the start button for three seconds AND THEN hit the sync button. Go to change/pair remotes on your switch menu and boom connects right away. Dont hesitate to buy it. I may buy another. The only thing I wish it did was connect to my ps4 so I can just use this one exclusively. This is the best controller I've ever used hands down so worth it!! Another small thing, 8bitdo if you're reading this. It may be a good idea to make the text grey or white on the controller. Seeing where the button letters are were kind of difficult due to the black on black. Other than that this controllers perfect <3 ... show more

  • Doesn't feel like a 3rd party controller & feels better than it looks
Edition: Black Edition
Let's start out with something that isn't relevant to my score but might be of interest to some buying this controller. My controller arrived and it didn't seem as new as they claimed, at least as far as the box was concerned. Some minor scratches from shipping were on the box were a whatever thing but the inside had some dust and other lil' bits of debris from what might be a previous owner or a refurb place. I doubt it was refurbished because the controller itself seemed perfect. It was just odd bits of bits of dust and particles on the plastic covering. Okay onto the review that's directly effecting the score: First of all, download the ultimate software for this off 8bitdos website, it allows you to easily update the controller and modify bits of it for PC and POSSIBLY Switch use. I haven't played a lot with this and my Switch just my PC. This is important you don't ignores this as one of the updates straight up says it's to help fix controller lag with the Switch with the Joycons attached. That's a BIG update if I read one. On to my experience After 10 minutes of just making sure everything was set I played about 4 hours of Monster Hunter World on PC with rando's & a friend and it's very, very impressive. It doesn't feel like a 3rd party controller, it really feels like a proper 1st party controller which is weird since I'm used to the XB1 rev1 , PS4 & WiiU Pro controllers. This feels like an odd mix between the PS4 and a SNES controller. Not in any badway just weird in the hands if that makes sense. There's several modes that the controller can function with, with PC for the most part you want it to be set to XInput as that's the standard for that, by holding start+X it'll boot into that. For switch you hold start+Y. You only need to do this if you're changing the device you're pairing it with. If you've already synced it, you just need to hold start. So it's quick like that. The buttons all feel solid as do the sticks, I didn't have any problem with Monster Hunter other than my hands feeling a Nintendo controller & the game being mapped for a XB controller. Each button felt responsive as did the sticks. I really couldn't see anything to complain about here. The triggers are analog so they'll give you the responsiveness you might want for PC and they work perfectly fine for Switch despite it not having analog. I played a bit of Freedom Planet on Switch (10 minutes or so) which can be demanding given your dpad inputs+attack/special inputs can change a lot. There's nothing I noticed here, dpad felt fine and I didn't go in a random direction when using my specials or attacks and I couldn't spot any delay. This is a game I've put over 150 hours into as I enjoy it so I think I'd be able to notice something really standing out. The controller comes with a USB -C charging cable which has a USB3 jack on the other end, so charging the controller is plenty easy. And unlike the PS4 controller if you don't want to use the pack they include, you can pop the battery cover open, remove the battery pack and slot in your own enloops- which I did for my first test run as I didn't want to wait to charge my controller. It worked great, I can't speak for batterylife in this review but I'd imagine it'd be fine considering it's basically a XB1 controller in it's functionality. I'm sure I can promise with CONFIDENCE this is better in 90% of ways than a PS4 controller with PC. I've had experience with that controller on PC and it was fine but would need 3rd party drivers for most games, which actively told me I had lag despite being only 2-3 feet max away from the adapter & the battery life of the PS4 controller even with 3rd party apps adjusting the brightness of the bar to dim or OFF- the batt life was still poor. This I'm sure will do much better. My MD30's batt life seems absurd. The grips feel better than they look in the pics, they look like they're kinda just slapped on to make up for the complaints for the regular SN30 controller but actually they felt pretty nice. They feel like a PS4 controller's grips and sticks with a SNES being the base for the face of the controller. I've seen some complain in the reviews but I'm not seeing those issues honestly. I got some cheap-y ASUS adapter for PC and my switch is maybe 3-5 feet away from the controller with direct line of sight and I noticed no lag nor had any issues hooking them up. It was about 10 minutes to get the controller updated & working on PC with xinput and less than a minute for the switch. You don't have NFC for switch but I doubt that's an issue for most. The short: Do you need a controller for PC or Switch but don't feel like shelling out a boat load of cash for a Switch Pro controller or a XB1 controller+wireless adapter. This can serve you just fine. There's no limitations to speak of for either device as they don't need an adapter *PC WILL NEED SOME FORM OF BLUETOOTH OR JUST WIRE IT) . The software and controller options are very, very robust, it's a good feeling controller and I couldn't spot any lag what-so-ever. This doesn't feel like those janky madkatz controllers you'd get because they were cheap, this genuinely feels like a 1st party controller but has the versatility of no platform to claim loyalty to. You can easily use it between PC, Switch, android and iOS with a small button combo to change it when you need it. I've used the MD30 controller much the same with PC & Switch and that was great & this seems to mirror that experience. ... show more

  • Great potential wasted due to silly design choices.
Edition: Black Edition
Had this for about a month and have been using it almost daily. This is the culmination of my experience. Hardware-wise, it is hit and miss. The hits are the rechargeable battery that can also be swapped out for regular batteries. This means that downtime between charges is virtually nil. The DPAD is also loads better than the Switch or even the Dualshock 4's. It also emulates the layout of the latter, which is a great boon to me as someone who prefers the playstation layout over the xbox layout most of the controllers in the wild tend to emulate. The superior DPAD over the latter also makes it well-suited for fighting games, where DPAD would see heavy use if you are the type to use a controller to fight. Being a Dualshock player, my fingers very much appreciated SN30's DPAD over the DS4's in Blazblue Cross Tag Battle, where I use the DPAD a lot and its design hurts my thumbs, in addition to slower inputs from the disjointed nature. However, the hits ends there. On the other hand, the controller shell is a dirt magnet, on top of feeling like a cheap, plastic toy in my hands. The buttons, while responsive, are also prone to sticking. Very frequently, I will press a button and hear a delayed depress letting me know that it didn't happen right away. It hasn't gotten in my way yet, but I fear it is only going to get worse from there, which sucks because I heard that this problem was supposed to have eliminated from this improved model, the previous model also having this problem. However, before getting this particular controller, I got two consecutive lemons, so many this is another lemon, I do not know. The rest of the issues have nothing to do with that though. As for wireless capabilities, true to its word, it connected to everything I threw at it. That number was only two: my PC and Switch, but still, it worked. On the PC side, there was no problem, connecting and using it was as simple as connecting my Dualshock 4. Connecting it to my Switch however, is a huge pain. First, it cannot wake the Switch out of sleep mode, unlike other 3rd party controllers. Thus, before I can even use the controller wirelessly, I have to use my WIRED controller to wake the Switch up and then I can begin to pair my Sn30. However, whether it actually will on the first try is hit or miss and game-dependent. You see, games that only support one controller connection at a time- which are mostly singleplayer games like Bayonetta 2- will present a major headache, as unless the SN30 is Player One, it will turn itself off and be rendered unusable as soon as you launch the game. The way to fix this is to go all the way into system settings, go to controller settings, and pair the SN30 from there, making sure that it is recognized as Player One. Then, you can use the Sn30 to play. Now, this behavior isn't 8bitdo's fault, but Nintendo's. However, the inability to wake the Switch definitely is 8bitdo's fault; only reason I even need to go through that is because the SN30 cannot wake the Switch, forcing me to keep my WIRED controller plugged in, meaning that it's always the first controller to be paired once I wake it up, meaning that it is always going to be Player One, meaning that I have to go through this every time I want to sit down and play a switch game, which is frequently, with the frustration mounting each time. If the SN30 had the ability to wake the Switch like other 3rd party controllers, I would have to have a wired controller connected to my switch at all times; this issue would not even exist. The silly design decisions don't end there. The SN30's killer application, The 8bitdo Ultimate Software, is a godsend when it comes to playing games that don't let you have complete control over your controller layout (the number of such games on the switch being way, way too high, but I digress). I can literally map any button to any other button, to multiple buttons, or even no button at all. There is even the ability to assign macros and turbo boosts. You can make unlimited combinations and make unlimited profiles. Just make sure that profile count doesn't exceed three, or you will have problems. You see, the Ultimate Software GUI is terrible. It always opens dead center in the middle of your desktop, assuming it does open (it crashes on startup sometimes). That and requiring a PC handy to even use it isn't really a big problem, but the inability to resize the window definitely is. That, combined with the complete lack of a scrollbar leads to certain options just not being visible, especially since there are no scroll bars of any kind. You know why I said don't have more than three profiles? Because you cannot scroll through the list. You can only see three profiles at any one time thus, and you cannot even see the third, it is only half-visible. So, profiles four, five, six etc. will be there, as one look through the program's installation folder where your profiles are stored will tell you, you just cannot reach them because you cannot scroll through your list of profiles. The only way to get to the extra profiles is to DELETE profiles so it has no choice but to show the one you want, which I found out the hard way. Once you actually get your profiles set up, you can sync them to your controller and it will work as expected, until you need to call upon another profile. You see, you can only have one profile loaded onto the controller at a time. So, if you're playing Smash bros. with your smash profile and decide you want to now play Bayonetta 2, you have to plug your controller into your PC (it will not work if you connect the controller to your PC wirelessly), load the software, hope the software doesn't have a graphical bug that requires restarting the program, load up your Bayonetta 2 profile, sync the profile to the controller, and then start playing Bayonetta 2 (after you do the system settings>controller settings> pair nonsense, of course). Let's say you have had your fill and now it's Breath of the Wild time. Well, you have to go through all of that again. And again for Mariokart. And again for Smash. And again for any other game you made a profile for. If we had the ability to load multiple profiles onto the controller and have it load a certain profile when a certain game is launched- or even let it do it ourselves via cycling through our list of stored profiles-, this would eliminate this unnecessary headache entirely. This could've been the holy grail of switch controllers if 8bit do had not dropped the ball so hard. When it works, it works great. The problem is that it takes so much time to even get it working. They took strides to and even mention that they worked to reduce downtime when it comes to how the battery works, but any time you would've saved there is completely overshadowed by all the downtime you will have between changing games, let alone taking a break from playing games. Factor in the graphical bugs, the crashing, and design decisions that require ridiculous workarounds to overcome, and you have a controller that could've been so great, but is not being allowed to reach its full potential. What makes this even sadder (and baffling) is that they initially delayed the release of this controller, only for it to still turn out like...this. Now, I will personally keep using it, because the ability change my controls and play wirelessly is too important to pass up, but the aforementioned problems mean that there will always be some frustration present and that frustration will always have me thinking in the back of my mind of what could've been. It will also give me pause next time I decide to look at an 8bitdo product. ... show more
