Panels are such an economical way to learn to paint, because they're inexpensive and easy to store. I also love panels when I want to reuse a vintage, wood frame.     • Thin But Useable
I ordered these for cyanotype on canvas. I'm always looking for new media to use for cyanotype and polaroid lifts. Though they are too large for a single polaroid lift, they are perfectly sized for cyanotype since I almost exclusively use 6x10 digital negatives. The fact that these canvases are so thin is both an asset (they will fit into a contact printing frame) and a liability (they are slightly curved right out of the box.) Cyanotype solution adheres to these canvases pretty well, though you will be using more sensitizer than you would use on the same sized paper. The image did not peel or flake during the development and washing process. I have to add that I did not submerge the canvas for a long time, and washed it by holding it under a stream of water. I don't know how well the MDF would hold up if soaked in liquid for a long time (as would be necessary if you wanted to tone your cyanotype) or if the MDF would swell, warp, or disintegrate. It's also possible that the canvas would come loose from the MDF with prolonged soaking. I'll actually test that out the next time I make some cyanotypes and update this review if any of these problems occur. I'm not a painter, so I don't know how well the surface of these canvases will accept paint, or whether or not the curve in the canvas or the thinness of these canvases would be an issue for painters. ... show more

    • Good beginner/student/practice boards
The Gesso primed, acid-free canvas are great for students, beginners, and anyone who likes to paint a lot. The 8x10 size is ideal because it gives you room for your design and imagination but is not overwhelmingly large. I can also easily create a sample painting on this board and scale up to a bigger canvas if I like it. I like that the canvas is pre-primed so that’s one less step for this beginner. There are a good number of canvases in the 72 pack so I can do 1-2 paintings a week and not worry about running out. So far none of the boards have warped which is much better than those I was getting for $1 a piece at the discount store. ... show more

    • A good size for learning to paint acrylics
I'm just starting to paint with acrylics, and don't need a large museum-sized canvas. I like the 8x10 size to practice my painting in relatively short sessions.
