This heating cable uses a single thermostat to control the entire length of the cable. It is critical that the thermostat for this system to work properly. The thermostat is covered by heat shrink and slightly protrudes from the cable where the power line and heating cable meet. This thermostat should be placed up against the pipe in that region that is most likely to be cold, and then the rest of the cable wrapped as desired. This can be problematic, and was in my case, as the cable was longer than needed. But once this is done, this heating cable works well and keeps the pipe from freezing. ... show more

I tested this prior to installation by holding an ice cube against the thermostatic switch . It powered on after about 30 seconds . It initially pulled 120 watts and reached an average temperature of around 115 degrees very quickly as indicated on an infrared thermometer . Once removed from the ice , the power dropped to about 63 watts , then finally to zero . Very good thermostatic control and excellent heat output . The cord end lights up when connected to power so it's easy to check that is live and ready to operate when the temperature drops . This heating cable turns on at 37°f and turns off at 55°f. It self regulates making it a simple install. Apply to your supply lines with the included electrical tape. You know at a glance if you have power by the illuminated plug. The sensor is sealed well with heat shrink that has an internal sealant. The end is sealed appropriately too.
