  • Excellent value 4 frame honey extractor Excellent value 4 frame honey extractor
Honey extractors are bulky and awkward items to ship no matter where you order them from. This can result in some shipping and packaging issues when being transported between warehouses and fulfillment centers around the country. The Trinfree extractor arrived packaged in styrofoam inside a carton. I found a lot of broken styrofoam pieces and crumbles when I opened the carton and had to use a vacuum to clean up the crumbles when pulling out the extractor. The legs and drum attachments are packed separately in the box. The crank handle, bolts and honey gate are in a plastic bag. There are instructions and warranty card included in the box. There are also spare nuts, bolts and washers included in a separate bag, which is nice. It’s easy to lose a nut or washer over time. The stainless steel drum is heavy and feels solid compared to some other brands that are made of thin and flimsy material. The three steel bars that attach to the drum were shipped bolted together, and one of the bars had a chip in the paint caused by a bolt. I like that the legs are supported all the way to the top edge of the drum, which makes it more stable. The leg height is adjustable, which is a big plus. The bottom of the drum is conical so the honey will collect around the edge. I installed the honey gate before attaching the legs. I measured the height of a 5 gallon honey bucket with a strainer on top, to find the right height. A 5 gallon bucket with a strainer fits under the honey gate if the legs are attached at the highest point. If you intend to bolt the feet to a platform or install casters under the feet, the legs could be lower. Before installing the honey gate, I turned the left bolt so that the nut is on the back side. Most of these plastic honey gates have the bolt installed with the nut on the front side from the factory, which makes it impossible to tighten after installation. A screwdriver doesn’t fit on the back side, but a spanner wrench does. There was a flat gasket included for the honey gate, but I didn’t use it. I only used the two round gaskets for the honey gate. Since this is a standard honey gate, it is easy to replace if needed. The honey gate should be open during extracting otherwise you will get whipped honey. I removed the bearing bolt in the center of the bottom, inspected and cleaned it. There were some metal shavings around the steel ball bearing in the bolt cavity. Before re-assembling the bolt, I added some food grade grease in the bearing cavity. This is necessary for keeping the bearing smooth during spinning and also keeps the steel ball in place. You will need 8 mm, 13 mm and 14 mm wrenches or sockets for assembly. The legs were easy to install according to the instructions. After placing the basket in the drum and tightening the cross bar nuts, I tried spinning the basket. It was spinning easily and the gearbox is very smooth. The gears are solid and well greased inside the gearbox. Cranking with my fingertips makes the basket spin fast without any effort. There was some material residue in the crank handle square opening preventing it to go all the way on the axle. I used a metal file to file down the material before re-attaching the handle and tightening the set screw. There are two clear half circle acrylic lids included. The lids arrived with a white protective film on the top side, and thin clear film on the underside. The lids were packed separately in a flat carton. I found the screws for the lid knobs had left abrasion marks on each lid. This is just cosmetic and doesn’t affect the function. The basket can hold 4 medium or shallow Langstroth frames, or 2 deep frames. The seller’s description shows 4 medium and 2 deep frames at one time. In theory you can load 6 frames in the slots, but I don’t think that would work. Please see photos. This is a tangential extractor so the honey from the 2 frames on the inside would be slung against the outside frames, not against the drum wall. I think it works best with 4 medium frames loaded in a square. After spinning out one side, the frames need to be turned to extract the other side. At the time of reviewing, my bees don’t have the honey ready so I will have to wait and try later. The basket can also hold 2 deep frames and 2 medium frames at the same time, but the weight difference might make it wobbly. I tested the fit with some empty frames. I only use medium frames for honey, so I had to test with some brood frames for the deep fitting. This is a great honey extractor for backyard beekeepers. It is overall a well made extractor despite some packaging issues. The price at $136.00 is fair. Most beekeepers are handy people with troubleshooting skills and are prepared to make some fine tuning if needed. ... show more

  • Time Saving Bang for your Bee Buck! Time Saving Bang for your Bee Buck!
I barely opened the huge, heavy box before realizing that I was way above my pay grade! I am a total newb! My grandfather was the bee whisperer of the family. My neighbor is a honey aficionado. He has several hives that he consistently increases via "annoyance" hive extractions and swarms. I've walked in his bee sanctuary, and those honey makers love me! I love honey! What a coincidence! On the chance that I have the bee whisperer gene, I ordered this extractor. My neighbor, JD, is going to teach me the bee biz! We harvest in the fall. I have no idea what I'm doing at this point, but I will learn before receiving my gratis hives next season. My mentor says this manual honey extractor is an excellent addition to the process. It's more sterile than open-air scraping and leaves the combs in better shape for replacement in the hives. I live in insect Armageddon, so I'm hoping this extractor will lessen that problem. The only thing I fear is clean-up. Honey is sticky! I'm placing hope on the seller's claim that this unit is easy to clean. A bonus is that it's set up to be used with 4 trays or 2, so regardless of my yield, I'm covered! Lastly, JD (Jeremiah, my bee-whispering mentor) says functionality is excellent and the complete setup constitutes a good value for the money. I can't report about all the wonderful things this extractor is capable of. I have much learning to do. It's too heavy for me to lift out of the box. Which reminds me, this thing is BEEFY! Best of luck in your bee-whispering ventures. This extractor is a great start to keep the flies away while gaining maximum yield, or so I'm told. ... show more

  • An exciting first step into beekeeping
My family has become increasingly interested in learning about beekeeping, and this extractor felt like a great way to begin exploring what honey harvesting actually involves. The stainless steel construction feels sturdy and substantial, and the clear lid is a nice feature because it allows you to watch the extraction process while helping keep everything contained. The manual crank operates smoothly, and the overall design is straightforward enough that a beginner can understand how everything works without feeling overwhelmed. I also like that it accommodates multiple frame sizes, which gives some flexibility as we continue learning about different hive setups and equipment options. One thing that became obvious very quickly is that honey harvesting is far more involved than simply opening a hive and collecting honey. Having equipment that is designed specifically for the task helps make the process feel much more approachable. While we're still in the learning phase of our beekeeping journey, this feels like a solid piece of equipment and a worthwhile addition for anyone considering harvesting their own honey. Sometimes a hobby starts with a book. Sometimes it starts with a piece of equipment that makes you think, "I guess we're really doing this." This is definitely the second category. ... show more

  • Looks good so far, arrived well.
Received today, happy with the quality so far. Will add grease zek to the gear drive this winter. Completely disappointed that someone, anyone has not in the history of time come up with a flat connector to radius bucket gasket (also 55 gallon drum) kit!!! This would be a $millions invention. We shall see… ... show more

  • So excited for the honey harvest! So excited for the honey harvest!
This is an awesome manual honey extractor! I really like that the drum is stainless steel and the legs, spinner, and frame cage is easy to pull out for cleaning. Everything comes together pretty easily, especially with a 14mm ratcheting wrench for the bolts and 13mm for the hex nut screws. Definitely use washers on both sides of the drill holes as the yellow powder coating on the legs can get dinged up if you aren’t careful. The design for the super placements are well balanced and everything turns so smooth and quietly without shaking or jumping… “smooth as honey” if you will! At the time I got this, it was priced around $140 which I think is a great price point for a beginner beekeeper or even a 4H project. Since it processes at least 4 honey supers at a time, this is a great way to quickly process an 8-10 frame honey super. This is a high quality extractor that is well made and will be getting a lot of use! ... show more

  • Good value, Versatile. Well packaged to arrive in good shape
For the money, this extractor can't be beat. I like how you can do both medium and deep frames. It's mostly designed for using with medium frames (4), but it's nice that you can also extract the occasional deep frames (2).. Well made. Clearly good quality. I'm impressed that the gears are metal. My only comment is to keep them well greased. ... show more

  • A manual extractor for when the SHTF
The manual honey extractor is a smaller, more affordable option than the electric, and something to consider for if the power grid goes out and you still need to extract honey from your hives. Putting the extractor together is pretty straight forward, you just need to provide the honey combs and buckets and manual power. The drum is hefty, solidly built and well made. The design is fantastic and it does what it is meant to do - extract the honey - and the trippod base makes it very stable. I feel that this is a great honey extractor to get for someone just starting out - the initial price is quite affordable and it gives one a good idea of what to do and what to expect. If one's beekeeping hobby grows, then one can invest in an electric extractor. ... show more
