I installed an old DVD drive into this enclosure for testing. It was quite simple, just four screws and the trim came off. The drive slides in, replace the 4 screws and install the 4 screws through the housing into the drive from the bottom side. Easy! Once installed, I plugged it into my Windows 11 laptop, and it was immediately recognized. I was able to backup a DVD without issue. Ultimately, this will house a BD drive for my TrueNas server, which also recognized the DVD drive after assigning the drive in Docker. The housing is made of nice thick aluminum. It has some weight to it which makes it feel like a quality housing, but not so much weight that it’s uncomfortable to move around. Make sure to install the rubber feet so it doesn’t slide around! Overall, this was an excellent purchase that I suspect will last as long as the drive I’ll be using. The price is a bit steep, but consider the quality of everything in the kit, it feels like a great value to me.

This review is for the Cenmate 5.25" Blu-Ray/CD/DVD SATA Drive Enclosure. In a world of streaming and digital media, I’m still spinning discs like it’s 1995. With more and more custom PC cases omitting 5.25" bays, it’s become increasingly difficult to install a traditional optical drive. This enclosure gives me the flexibility to add a CD/DVD drive to my gaming PC on a whim, and I can even use it with my M4 Mac Mini Pro. The enclosure comes with a power adapter, USB cable, and four mounting screws—everything you need to get started, aside from the drive itself (which is not included). Once I installed my DVD burner, I first hooked it up to my Mac and began ripping audio CDs into Apple Music. That process went smoothly. The next day, I connected it to my PC and was able to install older disc-based games I hadn’t touched in years. Not having to re-purchase digital versions of those titles makes this enclosure a must-have for me. In terms of build quality, it’s built like a tank—strong, sturdy, and reassuringly solid. It feels like it could easily protect the drive inside if accidentally dropped. I remember when these kinds of enclosures were much cheaper back when optical drives were standard. These days, the price likely reflects its status as a niche product, but for what it enables, I find it worthwhile. Overall, the enclosure does exactly what I expected. It’s reliable, well-built, and gives new life to legacy media. If you still have discs worth using or archiving, this is a practical and durable solution.

CENMATE 5.25" Blu-Ray/CD/DVD SATA Drive Enclosure with USB 3.0, 5.25 Drive Enclosure, Optical Drive Enclosure is well constructed and comes with everything you need to make your SATA optical drive to be used externally. The installation is pretty much straight forward. Remove the bezel, slide drive in the enclosure, put bezel back on, and then insert screws in drive and bezel. The only issue is when you insert the drive, the mounting screws holes on the bottom do not line up, drive goes a little too far ti install screws without having to adjust the drive. Once all screws are installed, 4 on both and 4 on bezel, the drive is secure and ready to use. Plugged in and works fine, nice to have because new cases don't come with spot for internal 5.25" drive. Comes with DC power adapter and USB cable that has the B connection on the drive end, and USB-C with attached USB A adapter, so can be used in both port types on the computer. Comes with screws and little screwdriver that works for the installation.

Drive would not fit without modification to the internal interface. Had to remove interface and cut off the standoffs. Even then the business end had a slight bow when I got it together.

I had a need to connect a DVD drive to my new gaming PC (it seems no new PCs come with optical drives anymore) and I had two Blu-Ray burners sitting on a shelf getting dusty. I tried this with both my LG and Hitachi drives, both of which 'ran when parked'. The process of installing a 5.25" drive in this was incredibly easy. I didn't have to fiddle with it at all, other than to slide the drive back out just a bit so the screw holes would line up with the openings on the bottom of the case. I opted to also install the rubber feet - they were just a peel and stick. I do wish there was a way to power this from USB somehow, but the included AC adapter works fine and using that doesn't impact the built-in power supply. I tried this with not only my gaming PC, but also a couple of laptops and this worked just fine with all of them. There's no fan, so no noise (unlike some others I looked at) and with water cooling on my PC I wanted to keep the sound levels as low as possible. Of course, depending on the quality of your discs there can be noise when an out of balance disc is at high speed, but that's not the fault of this enclosure.

Was trying to use with LG WH14NS40 Blu-Ray M-DISC. This drive is a very traditional form factor so there really is no reason it shouldn’t fit. However if you fully seat it, the mounting screw holes don’t line up. And if you align it with and use the mounting screws, it doesn’t seat into the SATA connector and doesn’t work. And even if you fully seat it, the included cable does not work. I did get it working after fully seating it and using my own cable. However, I’m sending it back because there’s no way that I’m gonna keep my drive in this external enclosure, not screwed down, and risk it come flying out.
