I got this for my son who is in the 2nd grade for Christmas. He loves science experiments! It was a BIG hit! He was super excited about it upon unwrapping it. So the surprise/excitement factor was there. When it came down to doing the actual experiment, the instructions were simple and easy to follow. Most everything you need is included & items that are not included are items that most people have on hand at home or in their kitchen(ie: cooking oil, dirt, water). Not only was the water purification experiment enjoyable for my 2nd grader but my kindergartener enjoyed it as well. So, it was a definite "crowd pleaser"(even for the adults involved). Also, there is more than one experiment included. So, you get more "bang for your buck" from that aspect while also getting another activity/experiment to do for another day. Although this was given as a gift, it would also work well for any homeschool, private or public school science curriculum. It is just an all around great buy! ... show more

The media could not be loaded. Took my daughter to the coast recently and drove past the windmill farms. She was fascinated and full of questions so we decided to look into a project. This kit works, but requires you to have extra supplies and tools not included. We did not have a 2L bottle, so this still has no stand. The screws are very tiny and hard to screw in, so I had to put them all in as my 10 yo did not have enough strength to get them all the way screwed in. A screwdriver is not included and requires a tiny screwdriver like an eyeglass screwdriver or one that will open tiny battery areas. Also, the instructions could be easier to read and use if they would label the parts with a number and a name the instructions would be easier overall. It would also help kids learn what these parts are. The wind turbine does turn on a light, we tested it with a fan and will test it outside once we get a stand, aka a 2L bottle filled with sand as we live in a pretty breezy to downright windy area. I received this today in our RND Lab and assembled it right away. Had 2 issues that once corrected, the unit works just fine. 1st, they provide a detailed instruction sheet and it is simple to follow. They "clearly" show the RED wire at the bottom right rear and the BLACK on the other terminal. After assembly the light would not light up. As an engineer, I immediately started trouble shooting and found that if it was spun backwards the LED would light up. Of course being thorough (they recommend twisting the wires which I just can't live with), had to "de-solder" and then re solder the wires to the opposite terminals. Using our shop air compressor system and 40 PSI the LED lit very brightly. 2nd, the bottle cap adapter that they recommend adding oil to is molded with too high of a tolerance. To fix this problem, I sanded the very top edge until it was smooth (there is a very definite ridge ring that can be felt around it that is unnecessary). After that it easily spun around as it should. I've added a picture showing the 2 steps above. So, in the end, definitely an excellent product for learning and and the price is very reasonable. If it hadn't been for the extra work it would have been given it all 5 stars. ... show more
