Got this item a few days before I was ready to bottle and it had a strong chemical smell, like fuel. Soaked it for a few days hoping the smell would dissipate by the time I needed it, smell was mostly gone by then. I had regular wine bottles so one of the pieces fit perfectly over the bottle neck, I had another style bottle, a moonshine type jug that neither of the pieces fit over. When it was time to bottle, I found I had to spray down my cork and the piece on the bottle for the cork to slide in easy, I also realized the hammer was completely useless. It didn't weigh enough or just trying to tap the cork in didn't work, I had to hold the bottle with my knees on the floor to keep it stable enough to put my weight on the cork to get it to slide in. Worked decently enough but after a couple dozen bottles my hands were feeling a bit raw, would help if the part that gets "hammered" were a bit wider to hold better as you push the cork down. Also, instead of a hammer, this product should come with something to hold the bottle stable while you cork One thing I did like about this product is that it leaves almost no mark on the cork after bottling, I've tried other corkers and they always leave uneven marks on the cork. ... show more

It will only do the smaller sized corks like would fit into an old soda bottle, the larger corks get stuck inside the plastic, we used the larger ones the last time we corked wine and used wine bottles which sealed very well. I am afraid these smaller corks would not work well for a wider bottle top and may leak. Plus the tool doesn't fit the bottle well enough so it moves around a lot while you are trying to get the cork pounded into the bottle, it can be a little difficult to get the cork aligned properly. Luckily I didn't need these corks for a few months because they did have a chemical smell which dissipated after sitting for those months.
