Wow! What a fun activity with the kids. We have a tree that produces small apples and we can only eat so much apple sauce - this press allowed us to make cider from the apples that didn't get sauced. I used a kitchen aid with the slicer attachment to prepare the apples. We used food grade mineral oil to prep the slats before assembling based on other reviews. Assembly took a minute, but it was worth it!

Great for Kids Too

We use these to press chopped up apples with families. They work great to make cider. They are also a nice size for a family with each pressing yielding a little over a gallon of juice depending on the apples. Their height is also nice, not too high so kids can operate them. The only challenge we have had is the metal bar comes in at about child head height depending on what they are sitting on and really hurts when it hits a sibling. The first ones we bought (we own 7 of them) were easier to assembly. These last ones seemed to have harder wood in the slats for the "basket". The holes drilled were not large enough for the screws considering how hard the wood was and several split despite the factory drilled holes. That was disappointing. Also, we have had a bit of trouble with the blocking that is used under the screw as spacers to press down on the apples. The kits come with two less wooden blocks than they should. We often have to improvise and there is no way to press a partially filled basket without finding other items to use as blocks.

Great value for the price

A couple things to address more negative reviews: - Yes, you MUST crush or grind your fruit first! This will not work if you toss in whole apples. This will not work if you rough chop your fruit with a knife. CRUSH OR GRIND. That's not a flaw with this product, that's true of any pressing operation. You'll get little to no juice if you press the fruit whole. - The feet have holes in them. SCREW IT DOWN. Why are people complaining that the press spins around when they're cranking it? Set it up right and you'll have a great time. Ok, now for the review: This press is great value for the money. I get the 4 gallon one for $130ish. I was kinda scared to drop that money on an amazon product of unknown quality (c'mon, usually this stuff is crap) but I was in a bind and my grapes were getting overripe and the jelly bag I was using to "drip drain" juice out of the crushed fruit wasn't cutting it. It needs assembly out of the box, oh no, the horror. But first impressions were good. Solid steel acme screw, heavy cast acme nut, the base tray is about 1/8" stamped steel with some stiff backs welded on the underside for rigidity. All the wood is raw and bone dry, a few slats started to split when I screwed them on (even with the factory provided pilot holes). I would have appreciated if at least the slats were pre oiled. I got a 12 oz bottle of butcher block oil and the wood drank ALL of it. The bag is pretty good quality, but I've only press about 40-50 pounds of grapes through it at this point, we'll see how long it lasts. somebody on here said it starts to rip after 10 uses or so... My only real complaint (and I'm not even sure how it could be fixed) is that the powdercoat is getting chipped already on the wear surfaces. The holes in the nut where the handle goes in are getting chipped etc. One last note is to KEEP IT CLEAN AND OILED. After each use I take the whole thing apart, hose it down really well, and oil oil oil. you hope the exposed steel is stainless but I'm not taking the risk on a new tool, oil the threads, keep the water off it. I expect this press with last a long time with the moderate use I expect to put it through. I plan on pressing 50-60 pounds of grapes, maybe 100 pounds of apples, and some honey comb through it every year....

Worked great!

Over 2 weekends I've used this to press nearly 10 gallons of cider from a few trees in my yard. I'm glad I went with the larger size and would go even bigger if I were to buy another one. Assembly was fun, but I'm a tool guy and enjoy those kind of projects. It's got surprisingly good build quality as I cranked that handle down real tight on each press and it took everything I could give it. As you can see in my picture, I screwed the feet to a plank from a shipping pallet, which worked well as a temporary setup. You'll want some way to hold the base steady while turning the handle. Your need to cut a few pieces of 2x4 as extra wood blocks depends on how full you plan on filling the basket. I'm glad I also purchased the fruit crusher for this process as it helped fit more in the basket and I think it helped get more of the juices out. The result was some of the best cider I've ever had! I absolutely recommend buying this fruit press if you are considering making your own cider/fruit juice.

Nice fruit press

The fruit press is nice and appears durable. The paint finish looks good. Components appear to be quality materials. This is my first use of a fruit press and it did well with strawberries I am pressing for wine. Like many other customer reviews there aren’t enough blocks for small batches. I had to cut 8 additional blocks to completely press 9 pounds of strawberries. Fortunately I had the resources to manufacture the additional blocks. Also, the vertical wooden press barrel slats are too thin. The stainless steel screws are longer than the thickness of the metal band and barrel slats. The tips of the screws extend through the wood and snag the mesh netting. As you can see in the pictures I used stainless steel washers to compensate for the length of the screws. Even with doing that I still experienced a couple screws extending through the wood. Picture provided. I had to remove the screws and file them down. This was the second fruit press I received. I had to return my first fruit press. As you can see from the picture, the product materials in my initial fruit press were unwrapped and loose in the box. The bottom line is the fruit press worked fine once I made the corrective adjustments. I would recommend it.

Got this press to make apple cider and it worked very well. Before use, rub mineral oil on the wood to help protect it and give it a nice finish look. Recommend screwing it to a heavier base to help make cranking the press easier and place jars underneath to catch the drip. Should be cleaned immeditely after use.

Sprung a leak.

An abundance of apples

This apple press worked better than expected. As in other reviews 2 of our slats had small cracks in them but that didn't effect the press. After chopping the apples filled the inside and started turning. It did a very good job of getting alot of juice out. It was fun watching the juice go into the bucket. We did buy a small heavy table to attach it to otherwise it would of been difficult to turn. Our trees produced alot and it didn't take long to process. Would have been nice if it came with a second bag. Clean up was easy.
