Got this for putting stakes/posts into to my hard soil. I liked this because of the length so I could drill at least a foot deep. My soil is like concrete in the dry months, and I didn't want to use a pick and shovel. The trick is to drill a starter hole and fill it with water, wait a few hours and drill again down to hard soil. Repete process to desired depth, may take a day to complete. Was now able to use a post hole digger to finish hole. Like another review stated, the hex head wears down with use, but just keep the chuck tight and it keeps digging. ... show more

    • Easy to use and stronger than expected
I'm trying to install 2" ground sleeves for fence posts, and this product seemed like it might work well to drill pilot holes. It was worth trying for the price. I ran it in a heavy-duty drill motor, and it worked great for the first foot or so, and then it hit some rocks. Same thing happened at the next two post positions. It could not get through the rocks, but it also didn't self-destruct in the process. I don't fault it for failing because I went out and got a 3-point post-hole digger for my tractor, and I *still* can't get through the rocks! Anyway, this tool worked as designed and held up well to abuse. I'll give it first shot at the remaining post positions because it's so easy to work with. ... show more

    • Surprised how rugged it turned out to be!
Bought this auger to use to run a water pipe under a sidewalk where I did not want the mess of using a hose to blast out a channel under the concrete. The auger worked surprisingly well although I had to rig up an extension to make it all the way across. You just have to go slowly and frequently pull out the auger to allow debris ejection otherwise debris will accumulate in the hole and jam things up. After successfully completing the project I used the auger to help my wife plant bushes in the yard. Amazingly, the auger handled some pretty rocky and root filled soil. Yes, the hexagonal tip on the shaft sheared off but the shaft still chucked up in the drill. BTW I'm using a Milwaukee 18 v Fuel brush-less drill/driver for this with the T-handle attached. It is rugged enough to handle the punishment that would probably kill most 18v drills out there (I have no connection to Milwaukee just mentioning the brand of drill because it will take a lot of punishment). Be careful or you can strain your wrist if you hit a rock or snag. Just put the drill in reverse and then go at it again. So far I have dug 20 holes with it that are 2 feet deep and about 18 inches wide. After using the auger to loosen things up, I use a post hole digger to remove the dirt from the hole when it is 1 foot deep. Then I drill down the second foot and use the auger to loosen things up. Then add compost and fertilizer to the hole and use the auger to mix everything up. Then the plant goes in and the dirt removed in the first step is mixed with compost and fertilizer in a 5 gallon bucket with the auger and then used to fill in the gaps along the side of the plant. All the welds are solid and the shaft is still straight despite having taken a LOT of punishment. Nice tool for the garden. Takes a little skill in that you must go up and down gently especially if you have clay as I do. If you take your time, after a few up and down motions, the bit can handle the clay. IT knocked out 94 tomato plants in an hour and that included fertilizing , planting and watering in.     • It works for digging fence post holes
I need to dig fence post holes about 2 feet deep into the ground. My soil is clay, compacted clay without pebbles or rocks. The clay is not dry because it has rained quite a bit for 4 - 5 weeks now. So, this product works fine for my situation, and I used a rotary hammer drill, which is much more powerful than most common household electric drills. However, I'd say the shaft needs to be at least another 1/4 inch thicker due to its 32" length. Also, if you do not have a powerful hammer drill, you should expect this would work on soft soil only. This item for the price helped me dig 10post holes . It loosened the ground so my post hole digger could remove soil easily.

    • Easy Aeration
I was a little apprehensive to try this. I got it to dig holes in the yard for aeration. Yard is 2-3 inches of good soil. Deeper than that is clay. I waited until it rained and used this the next day. Super easy.
