🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The iSteady X Gimbal is praised for its ease of use, light weight, and good stabilization once the user has understood how to operate it. However, the reviews highlight some areas this gimbal can improve, particularly related to the object and face tracking capabilities, the turning speed, and the sound picked up by the phone mic when moving. The app connected to the gimbal also requires refinement, particularly in the area of user preferred recording destination specification.

Pros

  • 👍 Lightweight and maneuverable
  • 🏅 First-time users find it easy to learn and use
  • 🧭 Solid stabilization capability
  • 🎞️ Comes with a series of informative tutorial videos

Cons

  • 🔌 Some challenges with connecting the device to a smartphone via bluetooth
  • 🎬 Turning speed may not be fast enough for some applications
  • 😕 Face and object tracking capabilities can be improved
  • 🔊 The phone mic may pick up noise from the gimbal when moving

Should I Buy It?

The iSteady X Gimbal is a reasonably well-performing product at its price point and can be suitable for someone looking for a lightweight, easy-to-use gimbal. However, if object or face tracking capabilities are a priority or if you need a gimbal that turns very quickly, you might want to look at alternatives. So, it's recommended to buy if you have basic needs and not so much if your videography necessitates more advanced features.

  • Worked better than expected!
Color: black
I honestly did not know what to expect from a gimble at this price, but it works good enough. If you wanna use all the buttons you need to use the app to record, but the app needs more work like an option of selecting whether to write to the phone or sd card. I have noticed that sometimes the mic on the phone pics up the noise of the gimble as it moves but its minor. My BIGGEST issue is if/when I am following someone or moving around the room and want the camera to follow or just move with me it trys to stay poingting in the same direction. This is great when your subject is staying still but when you need to move its SLOW to get it to turn with you. If they had a button or some kind of feature that would make turning ON PURPOSE in the room without turning on the gimble this thing would be much better. This thing is good and for the price really good but it could be better. ... show more

  • New To Gimbal? Read this
Color: black
This is my first time with a gimbal. I purchased this Product because I own a company that produces video content for marketing. Additionally, I am an event operations manager for large music festivals like Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, etc so the Gimbal would’ve come in handy for that. Alas, I haven’t been able to try it in this setting yet, but after checking out the product on simple life pleasure I am confident I can leave a thorough review of the product. There are a couple functionalities, so I’ll preface what my review will contain. Learning curve, usability, stability, face recognition, object tracking and other. Learning curve: this product comes with a mass of video tutorials created by the manufacturer. They’re easily accessible in the app the user must download to properly use the gimbal features. I wouldn’t say this it is overly difficult. I picked up a lot by simply observing the product and using it. I recommend watching the videos, as they contain information that I wouldn’t have guessed as a rookie user. Usability: the product is easy to use once I figured it out. I have some complications reaching the buttons without adjusting my hands. This could cause a problem, but the stabilization helps a lot. I learned how to use with both hands for fluid footage. The app makes this thing super accessible to everyone. It makes the usability much higher in my opinion. I’ve not tried anything else, so this is my only frame of reference. Stability: works great! You have to watch the parameters of the device itself. There are limitations to its ability to pan. I assume this is because of the structure of the product. Stability is managed very well while within the parameters of the device function. Face recognition: this was a bit frustrating at first. The camera seeks a moving face, so in a crowd of people, it chose to pic up which ever was best represented (often the closest face) and ignored the user’s desire to lock on a face. After learning a bit about the recognition software through use, I was able to stay in the desired face. Object recognition: essentially useless. If the object wasn’t moving or stopped, the camera stopped following and did not recognize upon moving again. I used this function the least because it was not working well. Other: the product needs some ergonomic fixes and some software tweaking. They sent a tripod and a carrying bag with it which was nice. I was a little disappointed at the battery life. ... show more

  • Lightweight, a bit glitchy
Color: black
This iSteady X gimbal is lightweight, comes with an attachable tripod, and connects to a smartphone via bluetooth. For reference, I am using a Samsung Galaxy S21 Android phone. Compared with another phone gimbal that I previously tried (DJI OM 4 - Handheld 3-Axis Smartphone Gimbal Stabilizer), I actually like the feel of this one better. That is really more of a personal opinion than anything. They both operate similarly with similar controls. The downside to this iSteady X gimbal is that it was very difficult to connect to my smartphone and certain features did not work properly. First of all, the product's manufacturer HOHEM does not provide very good written instructions to help with setup. Instead, you must download their app and watch how-to videos, and you must hunt for videos and online literature that will help solve your particular issue. The very first issue you have is connecting the device to your smartphone via bluetooth. You must do it a very specific way for it to work, and even then, you may have to repeat the process until it works. Mmmm.... that's a bad start. Once you get it working, there are two useful features that did not work 100% of the time. The gimbal has a Zoom button on its grip, which you can supposedly convert to a Focus button by touching an F button on your phone's camera screen. This did not work for me. I would love to have recorded a rack focus on video. That is a supercool and useful technique. There is also a Tracking feature button on the camera screen that allows you to follow either a face or an object. After selecting FACE, the camera automatically scans for any human faces in its sightline. It actually did a pretty good job of following my face as long as I moved slowly. The OBJECT tracking did not do as well, though. After selecting OBJECT tracking, you use your finger to select an object on screen and the camera keeps it in frame. However, in this case, the camera consistently lost track of the object. So far, the biggest shortfall of these smart gimbals is their software. They have really nicely constructed hardware, and cool software features, but the software does not always work well with various smartphones. Nor do the software features always work consistently. For the price, this is certainly a good smart gimbal to try out if you are interested in trying out the cool software features. Just be aware that there may be issues in connecting to bluetooth, and not all features may work as well as desired. Also, remember that you will probably only be able to use this gimbal for a limited time. Software updates to your phone and to the gimbal may alter their compatibility. Plus, eventually you will purchase a new phone and there is no guarantee that this gimbal will be compatible to that phone. ... show more
