IF yours doesn't punch holes, you have to open up the front part and change the direction of the spring. The spring that is closest to the hole punch part. For some reason the spring I received way put it backwards so it was catching on the mechanism inside and not pressing into the whole fully.

This is a usable and functional low budget center punch. The product listing indicates it’s made of “high-quality stainless steel” but it appears to be run of the mill steel. I saw no difference when I adjusted the spring tension and used the punch on 1/8” thick mild steel and the resulting dimple wasn’t very deep at any spring tension. That said, it’s usable and there’s admittedly little to complain about given the $6 price for 2 punches.

This is a nice punch. Would have given 5 stars, but the first time I used it, the punch did not reload. I took the unit apart but found nothing I could see holding the spring. I banged it on the table and the spring released. After reassembling the punch worked perfectly and reset every-time.

Item description: Automatic Center Punch x2 Brand: Karmiero Item: B0BR8B8XKJ Date received: 2023-03-09 Headline - Nice value; good to have one in each toolbox, and useful in the car as well. Product Claims 2 ct Automatic Center Punch I received exactly what was claimed in the product description as to quantity (2 ct) and type (automatic center punch). The items came in a white pasteboard box, each within its own heat-sealed plastic bag. There were no instructions for these (none really are needed). Each item is purely mechanical, operated by spring/ratchet action. You merely push down with the pointy tip at the place you want a starting punch, and the spring loaded internal hammer loads up and knocks the point into the material. If you need a deeper mark, or the material is hard, you can repeat this action several times to create a larger mark. These also have utility to keep in your car, as a window breaker, in case you end up in high water due to going off the road or mistakenly driving into deep water during a flood or hurricane. These are relatively inexpensively made, based on a now-standard long-ago design (my grandfather, a machinist in his early years known for making many of his own tools, made his own automatic center punch to essentially this design, circa the 1920s), but they are solid steel and should last awhile if you are using them in soft or moderately hard materials. You can touch up the point with a grinder or sharpening stone as needed. The point of these is probably not hard enough to put a mark into a hardened steel.

If you have to drill holes in ...... you can simply start drilling and hope the drill bit actually goes in straight. On metal or on rounded surface you know the drill bit will dance around before catching and scraping up the surface as it goes. These center punches are spring loaded so you simply place it where you want to drill press and it leaves an indent keeping your drill bit centered and straight. A must have for anyone working on metal or plastics. Good quality tool which when you learn how to use you won't ever not want to be without.
