  • No more drifting joysticks and excellent customer service!
The media could not be loaded. I'm pretty new to soldering and electronics repair and this was my first time working on a PS5 controller (I've done PS4 before). If you know what you're doing they're not too bad, but if you're a noob do a lot of research, and maybe expect that you might screw up the board the first time. I'm putting instructions and tips below, but as for the product itself, I installed both then tried them out. One was super clicky as in it was getting stuck and snapping around on stuff (video attached). I messaged the seller with that video and they offered to send me another set for free, no questions asked. I gave them my address and it showed up a few days later. They sent a whole new kit so I got another set of tools too. Since they were sending a new one I took the bad one off and took it apart to see what was going on. I was worried I broke it, but after closer inspection of it and a standard joystick I don't think so. The bottom of the joystick was catching on the base that had a circle thing that was sticking up. I attached pictures, but it looks like that was the issue and not that I messed it up. I got to disassemble the potentiometer parts so I've included some pics of those as well. Make sure you calibrate it after you're done! Gilikit's website has a super easy tool, you just plug in the controller and can test the buttons and there's a button towards the bottom to calibrate. After calibration the circularity test came back like 7-8% which is apparently really good. In the kit/the tools: You get 2 joysticks, 2 joystick covers, a metal pick, a plastic pry tool, a small Philips screwdriver, and curved tweezers. The tweezers are very high quality and seem to be the same ones that came with my hot air station, so thumbs up from me. I actually didn't use the metal pick because I don't love using metal on this stuff for fear of scratching the plastic. The screwdriver is meh. It's magnetic which is nice, but the back end doesn't turn that well and it's tiny so not super comfortable. But there are only 5 screws you need to do for the joysticks swap. The plastic pry stick was nice because I didn't have one of those yet. Although I do wish the flat end was more consistently sized. It's very thin on the edges, so thin it was flimsy and not super useful, but then suddenly in the center it gets really thick, too wide to fit into places. I ended up using the pointy side more to shove into the shoulder buttons to get to the screws than the flat side, but the pointy side wasn't great at getting behind the button and took some finagling, but it did work. Overall a solid set of tools that will allow you to do all the work on the controller. Installation: I've got a heat gun which makes this a lot easier. Unfortunately the solder that use on the controllers takes a lot of heat to melt. If you're using a heat gun like me make sure you tape off everything that's not the joystick with Kapton/heat tape. I accidentally desoldered a couple of capacitors which was actually impossible to reattach because they are truly microscopic. Like 1mm on the long side. I'm sure there's someone skilled enough to do that but it sure ain't me. I had to go on eBay to hunt down a PS5 controller with drift that was of the same generation. Also I tried to be fancy and keep all the solder liquid while I pulled the old one out and put the new one in. I'm not that skilled yet. I think this is what led to those components coming off and I cooked the board a bit. I don't think it was enough to actually damage it, but it definitely was a different color around the joystick. Overall a good decision to buy a new junk controller. Take your time, use lots of flux, and if you're not skilled like I'm not, just use a solder sucker to get the solder out and place the joystick in by hand when it's cooled off. Also be sure to test as you go. After installing the controllers the only thing you need to test the joysticks is the battery and a cable to plug it into a computer. I used gamepad tester but you can also use steam, gilikit, or others. Make sure the sticks move all around. As you assemble check that everything works. There were several times between the installations I screwed in the screws before checking everything and had to open it all up again. There's a piece around the speaker or something that falls out all the time that I kept forgetting lol. Final results: My friend says it feels good! She said the sticks felt a little taller, but not much and she adjusted within minutes. She didn't seem to think it felt different as in sensitive, but that's probably good. Like I said, make sure you calibrate on the website first and you should be good to go. Highly recommend this set if you have just one PS5 controller that needs a new set of sticks. The $15 price is reasonable is you really only need 2 joysticks and you can rest assured that the customer service is excellent ... show more
