One of the listing photos shows the words “AUTO EMERGENCY SET” printed on the side of the carrying bag for this tool set. But, I can’t for the life of me figure out when a trim panel removal tool would be necessary in an emergency. I can see the magnetic extension tool with the flashlight or hook on the end being used in such a situation if you drop your key or something down inside the engine compartment. Or using the air bags when you left your keys in the car and you need to break in. But, then again, aren’t these tools going to be IN your car in the first place? Seeing the words Auto Emergency Set on the bag made me think there would be real emergency tools, but I suppose it’s my fault for not looking a little closer at what’s included. Either way, I don’t see the relationship between trim removal tools and “Auto Emergency Set”.

This tool set seems to be focused on dealing with vehicle lockout situations where the keys are locked in a vehicle and you need to obtain access to retrieve the keys. However, the tools included would be useful for any number of different tasks. Included in the set are two air expansion bags, a whole collection of different pry tools and trim removal tools, a long metal rod with bend on the end, and a telescoping magnet with light on the end. And a storage bag that everything fits into. There's two sizes of air bags and they have different air release mechanisms. There's one that's more square in shape and one that's longer and skinnier. These work great and the way you use them is you slide them into a narrow opening and then use the air bulb to inflate them. Letting you gently open a gap. For example might create a small gap at the top of a door by using the air bags. The square shaped one you push the button on the bulb to release the air pressure. The skinnier one you turn clockwise to close and counter clockwise to open the valve. Make sure to close it before use or it won't hold pressure. The telescoping magnet with light is fantastic. Often when I'm using a telescoping magnet I'm trying to pick up something I've dropped that fell down into a likely dark space. So the addition of a light on the magnet makes it easier to see things where I'm looking. You twist the front part to turn the light on. You can also unscrew it and replace the batteries if you wanted. It uses a stack of 3 LR44 batteries. The long metal rod would be useful for poking or pulling items. A common method for retrieving keys from a locked car would be to use the air bags to create a small gap and then use the long metal rod to trigger an unlock button or pull a handle to open a door. The pry tools are quite diverse. One is a plastic handle metal pry tool, the rest are plastic. There's a lot of different shapes and sizes so you can find something to fit.

The kit comes with a good variety of tools, and some of them are genuinely useful—especially the long hook and the magnetic pickup tool with a flashlight, which have helped me out a couple of times. For basic tasks or keeping it in your car as a backup, it does the job. That said, not all the pieces feel the same in terms of quality; some are sturdier than others. It’s not a professional-grade kit, but for occasional use or emergencies, it works well. Overall, it’s a practical purchase if you know what to expect.
