  • Great Perlite But......(long review)
Size: 10 QT Color: Large Size - Perlite
After reading MANY reviews regarding this perlite, I decided to try it. I needed something really chunky for my orchid mix and can't find it locally. First off, it came in a box (be careful opening the box) and inside was a VERY thin bag. I knew not to pull the bag out of the box as the bag breaks very easily and I could see there was ALOT of dust in the bag. So what I did was, I have 2 of those big aluminum turkey roaster pans and carefully removed handfuls of the perlite and put it in one of the roaster pans (wear a mask or do this outside) and filled it 1/2 full. Then I shook the pan and moved the perlite to the second pan. I shook it again and then removed the perlite from the second pan using my cupped hands and put it into gallon freezer bags. There was TONS of dust in both pans but once I put it in the gallon bags there wasn't very much dust (if any) remaining. *DO NOT RINSE THIS IN YOUR SINK, THAT DUST WILL BE VERY THICK IN YOUR PIPES* I found a few pieces of styrofoam, a few pieces of green easter grass, a few pieces of red easter grass and 1 piece of what looked like broken pottery. I ended up with 2 REALLY FULL gallon freezer bags and 1 quart freezer bag which is almost full (ordered 10 quarts). So I do believe I got my money's worth. The pieces are nice and big and seem like a great quality. ALL perlite comes with dust and I was expecting that but there was alot of dust in my order. But because of the way I cleaned it, I didn't make a mess everywhere and now have BEAUTIFUL perlite for my orchids. Now, before I use it I feel that I could rinse it in the sink (or outside with the hose) and there won't be much dust going down the drain (or on the ground). I wouldn't hesitate to order it again and when I run out I will certainly do that! ... show more

  • Esthetic
Size: 20 QT Color: Large Size - Perlite
Love this stuff. I rinsed the dirt off of one of my philodendron and placed it in a glass vase with this Perlite, and filled it with rainwater and a few drops of liquid fertilizer. So, clean, and esthetic looking. I’ll just change out the rain water once a month, and enjoy my plant.

  • Works well to keep the soil loose, to help keep soil evenly moist, and to help with drainage.
Size: 30 QT Color: Vermiculite
I grow most of our veggies in our basement and use a high quality potting soil for all of them. Many of the veggies I grow require evenly moist soil that does not compact and that drains well. This vermiculite is very light weight and does not add to weight of the pot, yet it absorbs enough moisture to keep the soil moist while allowing better drainage of excess water. I have been adding this vermiculite to my potting soil, and it seems to be helping a lot with the plants that need to be kept moist, such as cucumber, string beans and tomatoes. It is easier to keep them moist without overwatering them. This vermiculite also helps to keep the soil looser so that it doesn't compact with watering. For example, carrots are easier to harvest since they are not stuck in the soil. To easily harvest carrots without breaking them, first push them down, and then they easily pull out of the soil. 30 quarts of vermiculite goes a long way even with the amount of plants I grow. It comes in a plastic bag in a box. I just leave the opened bag in the box and use as needed. When plants are watered, it does not float to the top as perlite does - it stays in the soil. I noticed that this vermiculite is not quite as fine as vermiculite I have bought in the past, and, considering the quantity of 30 quarts, it is less expensive than others I have found. I like this better since it does a better job of keeping the soil loose and aerated. This vermiculite is more of a gold color rather than the light brown color of others I have bought. I really like this vermiculite and what it does for my plants. I definitely plan to buy more of it. I hope this review was helpful for you. ... show more

  • Smaller than expected
Size: 10 QT Color: Large Size - Perlite
The container size was smaller than I thought it would be, but the perlite is nice and chunky which is exactly what I was looking for

  • Worth it!
Size: 20 QT Color: Large Size - Perlite
I originally bought this to use as a filler at the bottom of some really large pots. But then I realized how much it helps my chunky soil mix to add some to that as well and now I add it to every mix! Perfect size and doesn’t break down! Loved it so much I bought it again!

  • Inconsistent sizing between purchases
Size: 20 QT Color: Large Size - Perlite
I’ve ordered this three times. The first two times, it was really nice grade 3-3.5 perlite. Looked lovely, did its job. The last time I ordered it, the size was SUBSTANTIALLY smaller than it should’ve been. The whole 10qt bag was easily a size 2, barely bigger than what I can buy at Lowe’s. When repotting expensive philodendron and monstera, the giant perlite is essential for airflow around the roots, and the smaller size definitely made my potting mix retain too much moisture. The biggest drawback to this product is the enormous amount of dust in the bag. I’ve bought size 4-5 perlite at hydroponic stores in the past, and didn’t deal with nearly as much dust. Due to my allergies, I have to wear a mask when I handle it initially, and do my best to rinse it in slotted baskets I get at Dollar Tree, but I do so in my yard. It’s too expensive to not be consistent in sizing. I’ll be moving on from this brand because I can’t risk another purchase being too small. ... show more
