Full disclosure - For the price point, I was super excited about the chest and didn't expect a lot from the actual art supplies. Let's see if I was right! First, it arrived during a torrential downpour where I wasn't home more of the day, which meant the shipping box was sitting in a puddle. All day. Eeps. I opened it anticipating the worst and found everything so securely wrapped in plastic that not a drop made it through. Kinda want to give it 5 stars just for that. The artist pads seem high quality. The acrylic one is a nice heavy weight with fine gridded tooth to the front of the pages, and a smooth back. The sketch book has a likely unauthorized, yet lovely rendering of part of Van Gogh's Starry Night on it. The pages are thinner and suitable for sketching with pencil, pen, and possibly light watercolor. Opening the top of the case, it hinges and has two clasps that are easy enough to use for smaller or less dexterous hands, yet keep the case sealed during travel. Both drawers move easily with two small knobs. The chest? 5 stars for my Eeyore-like self that love boxes, bags, and things to hold things in. Now on to the supplies! The bottom drawer is all generically labeled crayons - a grey label that just says CRAYON with no indication of color, and two sets of the same range of colors. Testing a pea green - sadly the only one of the batch with a damaged tip - a light touch gives some color, while a heavier touch leaves random clumps. Not ideal for heavy art, but worthwhile for play time. Drawer two? Acrylic paint tubes and brushes with plain wooden handles. The brushes feel synthetic, which my animal-loving heart adores. While there's not a fine brush, the fan brush delights me. The others are two squares, two rounds, and a thin, but not really thin one. I chose a pink acrylic - rose - to try. Unscrewing the cap reveals an aluminum seal easily pierced by the sharp part of the lid . It's a bright color, with a texture more even than I expected. Side note - the third time I pulled out the drawer on the top drawer, one of the holders came out in my hand. Disappointing. All of the plastic trays are glued into place, which limits reuse options. On to the upper section! Oil pastels, which are a favorite of mine. They're marked like the crayons, no indication of color, just oil pastel on each. They're.... crayons. Same texture, same waxy appearance on paper, same depth of color with multiple layers, but without the globs that the crayons leave. In my spoiled estimation, these are mislabeled. Colored pencils? Very pale color - more likely to rip the paper than actually deepen the color. They're standard colored pencils, not watercolor ones. Watercolor cakes? On par with the acrylics, with a nice color and ease of use. There are a few additional items that I didn't test - an old school metal pencil sharpener, sandpaper to sharpen items, black pencils, grey rubber eraser, and a pair of brushes with the watercolors. Overall, I'd use those as a relatively inexpensive treat for children or those new to art to see what type of medium they enjoy most before expanding into more quality items.
