  • Sturdy, bright, and feature packed!
I bought the 150W Weeylite Ninja 400 to be a more powerful/brighter option to the GVM 80W lights I bought previously for my studio. While I like GVM’s small, light form factor, I couldn’t get quite as much brightness as I wanted. Enter the Ninja 400. Not only could I double the output, but I could control color temperature from 2500k to 8500k with the bicolor LEDs. To start with, the construction is sturdy - the case is metal as is the yolk and mount. The angle adjustment lever on the right-side make it easy to open adjust the angle, and clamp shut confidently without sagging. My GVM would sag when I attach my 60” Neewer softbox, but the Ninja 400 doesn’t hesitate and holds strong. That’s the difference a metal construction makes over plastic. My softbox does use the Bowens mount, so it is easy to attach things like a Fresnel or barn door. The included reflector dish really helps to focus the light when I don’t use my softbox. I noticed that the mounting hole/tube for attaching to a light stand or baby plate can be attached vertically or horizontally at 90 degrees. I don’t know that I need that feature, but I thought it was pretty cool and it’s nice to have if the need arises in the future to be able to do that without an adapter. The controller is simple and easy to use. It has the option to use V-mount batteries, so you don’t need to be tied to a cabled power source. I didn’t test this, but I’m sure that I’ll use this feature one day. It’s also worth mentioning that the cables are really long and sturdy. It’s about 10 feet from the attachment of the light to the controller and roughly 8 feet to the wall from the controller. That means that you can either hang the controller from the light stand or just set it on the ground without it dangling. The controller has a backlit LCD and can dial the intensity from 1% to 100% in 1% increments. The color temp goes from 2500k to 8500k in 100k increments. The wheel on the controller makes it simple to get it dialed in and the “select” button toggles between intensity and color temperature. A remote is also included that works in a similar way. It pairs instantly and has the option to control multiple lights in multiple groups on multiple channels. While I don’t use a DM512 controller, you have the option to use DMX In/Out connections as well. The last way to control the light is with a Bluetooth app (iOS and Android). It’s a little nerve-wracking installing an app directly from an APK rather than through a certified app store, but I didn’t have any issues. The app is intuitive and easy to use as well. It automatically pairs instantly and has presets for certain color temperatures. If I had a bigger studio, I’m sure I’d use the app and remote more, but for me, it’s simple enough to use the controller. While the Ninja 400 does have a fan for cooling, I found it to be very quiet. Even when I was very close at full power, I don’t pick up and sound when I record my videos. Going back to my initial need about more power/brightness over what was offered with my GVM, I tested by using the Zebras feature on my Sony a6300. I set the Zebra to 107 and anything higher than that would clip. I then shined the GVM at a white wall from 1M away and positioned my camera also at 1 M away. I manually dialed in the camera settings and to the point when the Zebras would appear. I then switched the light to the Ninja 400 and found that I had to close down the aperture 1 full stop to reproduce the Zebras. 1 stop of light means that the Ninja puts out twice the brightness at the same distance. I also tested the color temperature of the Ninja 400 against a Gary Fong 18% grey dome. I found that my a6300 read between 4900k and 5100k at 1% and 77% light intensity respectively when the Ninja 400 was dialed into 5500k. That means that the light runs somewhat warmer than the controller indicates. Not a big deal since I’m always color calibrating before I start a shoot, but it is worth noting. Side note, I recommend the X-Rite Color Checker Passport Video. It greatly improved the color accuracy in my shoots. There is a lot of competition in this space with different light manufacturers and that makes it good to have options as a consumer. For me, it’s a good fit because I like the sturdy build and improved brightness over what the GVM offered me. The construction also seems much more solid than what I’ve seen from Aperture Amaran 100x reviews. The bi-color nature offers me a lot of flexibility for different studio needs and I appreciate having that option in my back pocket. The remote and Bluetooth app are both nice to have as well. For a 105W bi-color light at this price point, I’m impressed that it has so many “bells and whistles.” In summary, I’m impressed with this robustly built, bright light and can definitely say that it is worth buying. I recommend! ... show more

  • Perfect companion to the Ninja 200. Very Bright!!!!
Here's my Rundown of this Light as a Working cinematographer. I First owned the Ninja 200 and it's a cool little light but I found myself needing more punch. Enter the Ninja 400. the CCT range is wider than most lights in this form factor or price range. the color is very accurate at either end of the spectrum +-<200 kelvin with a CRI rating of 95. The color accuracy is almost perfect metering at a +0.8 green so it leans towards magenta, I however don't see this as a problem since most LED's tend to green over time so i see this light lasting a bit longer than others. Also the Fan is very quiet, it's quieter than any other COB light i've ever owned( that's saying a lot!). The tightening knob has geared Teeth and is very secure( sometimes it's hard to adjust the light) which is a good thing, this can hold very large modifiers with no problem. It comes with a remote and can also be controlled with the weeylight app (IOS) No FX work on this light in the app though. you can also control it with the controller box and it has a hanging strap that you can snap right on your light stand, it has a V-mount attachment on the back of the controller so you can use battery power but be warned when you use Batteries you're limited to 85% of the full brightness. It also has DMX in/out on the controller box. the ballast is also Hard wired to the power brick so be careful not to damage it as it seems to be proprietary and i'm not sure if a replacement is available for purchase. It comes with the Newer "Hyper" reflector design that focuses the light and boosts your output as well as a high quality carrying case that is as durable as the other brands and should hold up to travel use for location shooting. Overall if you're looking to step up your lighting game this is a great light to have in your kit. The small cons are not a deal breaker for me seeing as I can use this light to match others in my kit and easily modify it. This is a No-Brainer at Half the price of other well known brands with less output. HIghly Recommend this Light. ... show more
