  • Very affordable and genius set to teach yourself to write Chinese characters.
Zero written instructions necessary for me to get the gist of this amazing beginners Chinese calligraphy set. One of the cloth like pages has graphics with arrows of detailing on how to make each shape mark in Chinese characters. Let me tell you, it is much more challenging than you would ever think lol! Amazingly, with just water, (using one of the three included brushes in a small receptacle for the water ), the marks you create turn black on the material and as it dries, they completely fade away. I made sure to rinse the brushes first, and it's a good thing I did, because there was some yellowing in the rinse water as I rinsed the first brush out. So far I've only tried one of the brushes, as I will need to do further reading to figure out which one would work best for which marks. It has been my dream for many years to learn Cantonese and Mandarin, but maybe if I start by learning all of the characters, or at least the common ones, (I think there are literally thousands upon thousands), it will make for an easier head start. Definitely well worth the low listing price of $8.99 USD. The quality of each seems above the asking price, but I'm sure it is not considered a professional set of brushes. The brushes themselves are quite beautifully made, with writing on each one. I don't know what it says, but it makes them that much more beautiful. Each brush also has a plastic cover to protect the brush ends. There is also a small thread loop at the top of each brush handle, which is attached to the wood and coming through the plastic top handle. ... show more

  • Nice, fun setup for learning. No ink needed!
This is a great little set up for anyone wanting to learn Chinese calligraphy, and without making a mess or cleaning anything up! There are three brushes in three reasonable sizes – that is, all are appropriate for writing on about the same scale. None is too tiny or too huge to be useful. Each brush has a loop of string on the end so it can be hung on a brush stand. I am not an expert on calligraphy brushes, but they seem to be very good quality. They are more “fluffy” than my other brushes, which at first I found concerning, but I wonder if it actually means they can hold more liquid than brushes with very straight, smooth hairs? Importantly, they work well. I found it very easy to control them, the hairs stay together in a coherent point, and they hold a good amount of water or ink. If you haven’t worked with Chinese calligraphy brushes before you should know that they are universally shipped with the brush hairs coated in water soluble glue or starch. So when you receive them they will be in a stiff, hard point. They need to be soaked for at least 30 minutes – not just a quick rinse. I have had some brushes that required a couple of hours! These seemed ready to go faster than most. You can find some excellent videos online that cover preparing new Chinese calligraphy brushes. I took the real magic of this set is in the practice sheets! I had not run across this stuff before. It is thin, smooth sort of fabric, black with a design on the back, and white with instructions and examples on the front. I thought at first I would need to put thin paper over it and sort of trace the examples, but this stuff works like a Buddha Board – when you paint it with water it turns black, like ink! And when it dries, the “ink“ disappears and it turns back to white so you can try again. It dries fairly quickly, but if you wanted to speed that up you could keep a fan on low aimed at your work. That’s pretty cool, and a great way to learn, but the real joy of it is that it takes the hassle out of practicing. You don’t have to prepare any ink, risk making a mess, or clean anything up! So instead of “maybe I’ll do that later, when I have more time,“ you can just sit down and practice for a few minutes. I let the sheets dry, which took just minutes, then rolled them up and secured them with a couple of clips. The sheets are very thin, and the magic “ink” coating varies a bit from one to the other, but they all work perfectly well, and seem like they should last while. Probably better to roll them around something, like the cardboard tube from paper towels, so they don’t get bent or creased. The instructions on the practice sheets are clear and progressive. There is a sheet of basic strokes, several sheets of characters, one with just gridlines for practicing any character you want, and one that’s completely blank for freestyle “painting,“ The sheet of basic strokes has lines and arrows showing how to produce each stroke, so you aren’t left guessing or trying to “color them in.“ A tip about the instruction sheets: If you don’t read traditional Chinese, you can use Google Translate along with your phone’s camera to see what each character says, and to read the instructions! Bottom line, this is a well thought-out, easy-to-use setup for learning Chinese calligraphy, at a very reasonable price. It makes practicing easy and fun. I would recommend it for adults and children, and I’m looking forward to playing with it more. ... show more
