These work great for many things and saplings, deep loving seeds. BUT… if you are growing something like micro greens that wanna root on top basically.. sacrifice one sponge to plug the holes with sponge and make it as deep/ shallow as you need. Good luck out there green thumbs.

These are the cheapest hydroponic sponges I've found on Amazon and the quality is excellent. I use them in my tower garden system and they hold seedlings securely while allowing good root development. Bought in bulk and glad I did. They fit perfectly in standard net pots and the material is durable enough to reuse after cleaning. Germination rates have been consistently good across lettuce, herbs, and microgreens. One caution: they do collect algae quickly, especially if exposed to light. I now cover the top layer with opaque material which solved the problem. Easy to rinse and sanitize between uses. For the price per unit when buying larger quantities, these can't be beat. Way more economical than buying small packs from hydroponic specialty stores. Stock up if you run a tower system.

I bought some lids and pod baskets for mason jars and the baskets were bigger than the plugs I use in my other hydroponic systems. These pods are just the right size for the larger pod nets. I have some herb sprouts coming up already and it has only been a week.

Nice little sponges. A bit smaller than I expected, but they work. I like them better than the peat moss ones in the nylon stocking casing. These hold together on their own without anything artificial, and unlike peat moss, they soak up water quickly.

Moving from using countertop hydroponic gardens, I purchased a tower system. They contain peat and the diameter of these sponges fits perfectly into the square net pots which came with the system, so I purchased a bag of 100 – after all I reasoned, what could go wrong?! Other than one sponge which was planted with spinach, which began to grow but a couple of days after emerging from the hole enough to see it died, and none of the other seeds I’ve tried to grow in them have germinated at all. All seeds except one variety I’ve been consistently, successfully growing in the sponges which came with my countertop systems, so I know that the seed used isn’t the issue here. With the first group that I planted, I assumed that the zero germination *must be* a fluke, but after trying numerous plantings of various seed varieties and having only one start to grow, then quickly die, it seems my hopes for these sponges were misplaced. Cannot use, nor recommend this product.
