  • From “Reptile Bedding” to Thriving Garden Mix… Turns Out My Plants Don’t Care About Labels
I’ll be honest… I don’t own a reptile. No snakes, no lizards, not even a dramatic little gecko judging me from a corner. I picked this up purely for my plants because coco coir is a staple in my DIY potting mixes, and I’m always on the hunt for a good, affordable brick that doesn’t turn into a dusty mess. This one? Solid. The brick expands exactly how you want it to. Add water, give it a minute, and it fluffs up into that soft, airy texture that makes your soil mixes feel like they have their life together. No weird smell, no excessive dust cloud trying to take you out while you break it apart. Just clean, consistent coir. I’ve already mixed it into a fresh batch of potting soil, and my herb and flower seedlings are doing their thing without complaint. It holds moisture really well without turning into swamp soup, which is always the balance I’m looking for. Roots seem happy, drainage is still decent, and nothing feels overly compacted. Also… the amount you get is no joke. Once it expands, it’s like, “where did all this come from?” Definitely enough to stretch across multiple mixes or projects. If I had to nitpick anything, it’s that price-wise it’s not wildly cheaper than what you’d find at a big box store. But the real win here? I didn’t have to put on real clothes, get in my car, and wander an aisle looking for the least destroyed bag on the shelf. It showed up at my door in a day, and that alone is worth something. So whether you’re raising reptiles or just trying to keep your basil alive like me, this does the job without any drama. Clean, easy, reliable… and my plants are clearly not mad about it. ... show more

  • Great for seed starting and growing plants.
I'm starting to move away from buying potting soil and garden soil to using coco coir for my garden. I find coco coir is best for seed starting and germination. You don't want to use potting soil or garden soil because it has bunch chunks that might prevent seeds from growing roots. Or the potting mix might have too much fertilizer or nutrients. Coco coir is inert and pH neutral. It is also good for propagating cuttings. Coco Coir is also better for the environment compare to peat moss. Coco coir comes from coconut husk fibers. It does a pretty good job at being mold and algae resistant. For seed starting, I don't need a lot of coco coir, so I just normally get coco coir pellets. But for my planters and pots, I just get a big block of coco coir like this cause it's more economical. This 10lb block of coco coir should expand to 70 quarts once you put it in water and let it soak up the water. That's a lot. My bag of potting mix I got from the big box store is about 32 quarts. It you don't need that much, you can just break up the block into smaller chunks before putting it in water. What I like to do is just mix the whole block of coco coir in water. Then put it in a big 50 gallon trash bag to keep in moist and store it in some place away from the sun. I had some for over a year and it is still moist. You can using coco coir and make your own potting mix. Seen different suggestions like: 3 parts Coco Coir 1 part Perlite 1 part Compost For $25, it's seems like a reasonable price for a 10lb block of coco coir. ... show more

  • Wow!!! This expands eeally nice and makes A LOT!!!
I didn’t realize how much I was ordering. WOW there is a lot of coconut fiber in this 10 pound block. I chipped off a piece today and placed it in some warm water and it expanded really well. I would highly recommend using warm to hot water when expanding it. It worked really well. The piece I chipped and cut off with a box cutter was about 1/10th of the block to use for planting some tropical plants and mixed 1/2 & 1/2 with soil and bark chips for my orchids. The piece that I expanded made just under 2 gallons of nice quality and clean coconut fiber. I will be using the remainder of this block in my greenhouse and in my garden to help keep moisture in the soil. It is a nice quality fiber so I would feel comfortable using It for reptile bedding as advertised, although I don’t have any reptiles. This 10 lb block is a great value for $25.00! I expect that I will get the whole 18 gallons of expended coconut fiber. I prefer the fiber to the coconut peat because it will take longer to break down and keep the soil looser for longer. If you need an enormous amount of coconut fiber, get this. It is a really good deal. ... show more

  • A reasonable amount of good CoCo Coir fiber at a good price.
I ordered the Nurtara "Coconut Fiber Substrate" mainly because the weight of this fiber for the price defined a pretty good overall value proposition - assuming the quality was there. Spoiler alert: It was! Now, let's be direct: CoCo Coir (Coconut fiber) is a great soil additive for retaining moisture in your potting soil mix. It's super absorbent, and at the same time it alters the texture of your soil making it loamier so seedlings can more easily push thru and root into. The quality of most all Coco Coir is pretty much the same - assuming the material is clean. The only real difference is the value which is a function of amount per dollar spent, and the overall density of the product received.. I do a lot of gardening, including making my own garden soil mixes each spring. I start with my compost from the previous year, then mix it down with both Coco Coir and pearllite for the purpose of improving overall drainage and making the soil less dense. I live in the US Midwest, which tends to make CoCo Coir more expensive here given the shipping, so when I saw that this was a 10 point brick of compressed material, I decided to take a chance and order it. These bricks are hyper compressed so after they are wetted down, broken up, and tumbled each brick makes about 17 gallons of Coco Coir material. For where I live, I can't touch that price at my local garden center. But I can say I found the material to be clean and well suited for my soil augmentation needs. If you are looking to make your own garden, potting, of seed starter mixes, this Nurtara Coconut fiber block is worth your consideration. ... show more
