For some reason the ball started to grind down and left fine metal. Maybe any stainless steel would do that. At least the color it left behind was steel gray instead of rusty brown.

The stainless steel is high quality. The metal is smooth and shiny, and you can feel it is solid by its weight. I bought these to slow my pet down by placing them in his bowl and they are heavy enough that he can't knock the out. I had already tried other items in his bowl, but he always knocked or pulled them out. I ordered these two 1.25" diameter stainless steel balls (each weighing 4.6 ounces) as a manly fidget: I orbit the two balls horizontally in the palm of my large hand and they make remarkable (annoying to others?) noise while rubbing together. In addition, the steel balls are an absolute levelness indicator much more accurate than a bubble level. The two balls are manufactured from 304 stainless steel and essentially are not magnetic, but they are corrosion-resistant to everything except salt water and require no special care in normal use. ... show more
