  • Great lens for a small price
I was originally hesitant to buy this lens because of its low price. I have several Canon L-series lenses, and had always thought that the L-series lenses provided superior results to standard camera lenses. I read many, many reviews of this EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens, and was struck by how many professionals were impressed with the results they achieved with this lens. I also reviewed hundreds (maybe thousands) of user-submitted photos taken with this lens. Again, I was impressed with the results achieved using this lens. So I figured, for a hundred bucks, I can't go too wrong trying this lens. I was pleasantly surprised. Although the lens doesn't feel as good in the hand as the L-Series lenses do, it certainly performs with comparable results. I use a battery grip on my Canon EOS camera, so the counterbalance of a heavier lens is actually a good thing for me, but this lens is extremely light weight, so the camera feels a bit awkward when I have it installed, but other than that minor complaint, I am very happy with this lens and the results I am able to achieve with it. I would recommend anyone give it a try if you are in the market for a 50mm lens. ... show more

  • Great little lens with a few minor limitations
I've always used a zoom lens before, so this was my first experience with a prime lens (fixed distance). For the price, it's great! The 'cheap' plastic construction doesn't seem to be any worse than the (18-55mm) kit lens I've been using with my Canon Rebel Xsi. I don't like not being able to get wider angle shots with the lens, but that disadvantage is more than made up for by the slightly sharper pictures it produces plus the fact that it can open to f/1.8 compared to only 3.5 from my other lens. You can shoot in very dark places without flash if you're willing to accept a very limited depth of field (meaning, for those who need the explanation, that only a small area can be in focus). The UV filter (made in Japan!) and the lenscap keeper were nice additions to the package for no extra charge. Addition to my review: I didn't notice it at first, but later realized that this lens does not have stabilization. I should not have assumed that it does. It's not a problem unless you're shooting at a low speed without a tripod. ... show more

  • When using almost wide-open aperture like f/1. 8
Finally, I can shoot indoor without a flash and the use of a tripod to avoid camera-shake blurriness if I want to show the ambient background. When using almost wide-open aperture like f/1.8, the focusing technique should be different than shooting with f/4 or f/5.6. Because of the very narrow DOF, you should compose a shot first and without moving your camera use the dial to select your Autofocus (AF) point to point over the main object feature (like a person eyes) you want to be in sharp focus before releasing the shutter. Everybody should have a primal fixed focal length lens like this 50 mm with the widest aperture setting. Now if I want to shoot indoor portraits, I will use my legs instead the zoom ring to compose shots. Even if I probably still use my Speedlite, it would be much more easy to keep the ambient exposure within flattering ranges. Having the APS-C size sensor, actually this is 80 mm (x 1.6) lens for my camera. So it's just right for portrait shootings. ... show more

  • Great lens, saved on shipping with UV filter combo
The Auto-focus for this lens seems much more clumsy than the kit zoom lens that comes with the Rebel cameras, as there is no image stabilizer or ultra-sonic zoom - but these features aren't really needed anyway because this is a faster lens. Using manual focus is probably easier most of the time anyway because of how shallow the depth of field gets with with aperture wide open. Also, this is a better deal than purchasing just the lens by itself since they throw in a UV filter with the order for as cheap as you can find one anywhere else (this is the only 52mm filter/lens in my collection so you might want to also think about that - I always like to keep my lenses with UV filters on to protect from scratching). ... show more

  • Ultra-Sharp
I know it's not the same quality of build as the L lens, but as far as the results, it takes ultra-sharp pictures! I don't use a 50mm much in my shooting, but I did want to have one in the bag for those few times I did. This one is the best value for those needs. I'd have to replace this 3+ times before approaching the cost of the L version. But with the way I take care of my lenses, that likely wont happen. This is a good purchase for those who have some use for a 50mm, but not a lot. If you use the 50mm at most shooting occasions, then plunk the money down for the L. If not, go for this one. ... show more

  • Little Magic Lens
This lens is just a little bit of magic. I got My first DSLR with a kit lens and added this on. Best idea ever. The shots I am taking, I am amazing Myself! The lens cap keeper did not come with My order. It was too small of something for Me to complain about but I was a little disappointed it wasn't there. Why I gave 4 stars. But the lens and filter are great. 5 stars on those. ... show more

I love my new 50mm f/1.8 Caera Lens However my order did not come in with the 52mm UV cover I purchased my lens through Amazon so they credited my acoount and I purchased the UV cover seperatley. I live in a rural area that does not have a camera store with in with in two hours of my house. Except for Best Buy and they are pretty much stupid. I attached the last photo that I have took!! • Great for the Money!
Like it, use it, satisfied with it! For the money it is a Great Lens. Not magazine quality, but it's not $2000 either. It's a Great Pocket lens, that if you dropped it, who cares! It's cheap enough to buy another one.
