  • A truly excellent bass guitar for any bassist!
I've been playing bass guitar for over 50 years. I've owned a Fender Precision and a Rickenbacker 4003 that were both fantastic instruments, but they're very expensive these days. I've played Yamaha instruments over the years - acoustic guitars, basses and pianos - and have always been impressed with the quality. They seem not to have changed because this bass is one of the finest instruments I've ever played. I ordered it from the Music Zoo for $240 based on the many excellent reviews I've read about it. It came well-packed and perfectly set up from The Music Zoo, who gave me great service, responding to my initial questions and even getting it to me a day early - so 5 stars for them too. The roundwound strings sounded really good, but I removed them and replaced them with Thomastek-Infeld Jazz Flats because I like flatwound strings. The neck is so stable on this bass that it didn't require any truss rod correction switching from the higher tension roundwounds to the lower tension TI Flats as I used to have to do with the Rickenbacker. The action and intonation were pretty much perfect (I made a few small adjustments), the volume and tone controls are solid with a nice feel, the maple neck is very comfortable to play and there were no fret edges sticking out. Both pickups sound good and are quiet - I don't like midrange tones, so I mainly use the split-pickup near the neck and just a bit of the bridge pickup. The fingerboard seems to really sustain the notes, which isn't always true of a bolt-on neck. It also has 24 frets, so you get a full two octaves on every string. It IS a long scale, so for young players or those with smaller hands, a short scale might be a better choice. But I can't give this bass any less than 5 stars. I simply can't find anything I don't love about it. As with any bass guitar, it will really benefit from an EQ pedal or Sansamp for warmth and tonal variety. To say that it's a great bass for the price would be unfair to Yamaha - it's a great bass at any price. ... show more
