  • Great sounding classic electric bass
Style: 100 Series Size: 4-String Color: Old Violin Sunburst
I'm not sure how many stars to give... The delivery was a bit botched, but the bass itself is excellent. Evidently there was a mixup between Austin Bazaar and FedEx. The tracking number was issued at 10:45 one morning., but the package wasn't picked up by FedEx until 5:00 p.m. the next day, resulting in my bass being delivered a day late. The bass was double-boxed. The outer box was immaculate, the inner box (from Yamaha) was pretty torn up, but the bass itself was fine. My bass is a lot darker than the photos on the website, almost black. The lighter sunburst color is really only visible under the strings. I wish that weren't the case, but it's still a pretty instrument. I suppose that it's the luck of the draw, and for an inexpensive instrument, I shouldn't complain too loudly. When it arrived, the strings were so slack that my tuner couldn't register the notes. I tuned it and played for a few minutes, then was called away for an hour. When I got back to it, all the strings were a bit flat. Over the next day or two this continued, with the strings a little less flat each time, so evidently, they'd never been brought up to proper tension. I think that's a good thing, the strings should last me longer. The last couple of days it's stayed in tune, so the tuners weren't slipping. As far as I can tell, the neck is straight and the bass is intonated well. I'm waiting for a gig bag to be delivered, then I'll have it properly set up by a guitar tech. I'm a guitar player who decided to try bass. A couple of years ago, I bought a Rumble 40 amp and an Ibanez Mikro (short scale bass) because its scale length isn't much longer than a guitar. Gig bags, straps, storage racks, and etc. for use with a guitar work well with it and it's inexpensive. I enjoyed playing it, but there was an indefinable something missing from its sound. I decided that I might like to take bass lessons and wanted to learn on a regular size bass, so I spent a couple of weeks researching them before deciding on this one. I've only been playing the Yamaha a few days, but I really like its sounds. I'm 70 years old, and like old music. I don't play slap bass, rap, hip hop, reggae, or etc., so I can't comment on how useful it is for those styles. For 1950s-1970s-style country and pop, its everything I could wish for. Many basses power on an active circuit when you plug in the instrument cable. I'm in the habit of leaving the cable plugged into an instrument when putting it back into the rack, so I didn't want a bass which would drain a battery if I did that. This bass has passive pickups (like the Fender P and J basses) and doesn't even have a compartment for a battery. All in all, I'm pretty happy with it. ... show more

  • Yamaha is incapable of making a bad instrument, PERIOD!
Style: 100 Series Size: 4-String Color: Old Violin Sunburst
Just took delivery and inspected the contents. Like other reviewers, I found the packaging sparse but apparently adequate as there was no damage. Fret ends were smooth so apparently some care was taken at the factory. When friends asked I have always recommended Yamaha instruments including their brass and woodwinds because Yamaha has an unrivaled reputation for both top quality and value. All their offerings at every price point are top notch and retain value. You can never go wrong buying Yamaha as a first instrument. The TRBX174 is a perfect example. ... show more

  • Very Happy After Adjustments
Style: 100 Series Size: 4-String Color: Old Violin Sunburst
Nice to not get a guitar from China. Indonesian made but Yamaha quality. Has a very nice look as well as sound, my only suggestion would be to replace the strings with a good quality flat wound, I replaced mine and it made made a world of difference. (Read the updated review below) OK, so four years later and I need to update. Not having owned a bass guitar before, although I've played several including vintage Rickenbacker's and Fenders, my initial review was a little gushy but now I can give a real world review. Again it's a great instrument for the price but has some shortcomings, first and foremost are the frets, sharp and uncomfortable, you can get a nice fret file here and do the work yourself, I bought a Fret Guru Ultimate Fret End File 2, or find a good luthier and have them do the work which leads to my other criticism is that the instrument really needed a good set up. The neck was bowed up slightly and the saddle was completely out of adjustment, I found a really good luthier nearby and he did a complete set up and string replacement within thirty minutes. I'll tell you this was the best thing that I could have done, now the bass is a total pleasure to play and the sound is great. He recommended putting La Bella strings on it and I bought a set here, on Amazon, La Bella #760FS Deep Talkin'. I played at church this morning and my wife told me that she could really hear the bass and it sounded good, pastor tried it out and loved it. So my suggestion is spend a little more, get the stings and find a good luthier and get it set up before you get into playing it, you'll be much happier. Also get a metal jack plate, the plastic one that comes on it really sucks, I bought a Musiclily Pro 10mm steel curved recessed bass jack plate here on Amazon. ... show more

  • Very Pleasant surprise
Style: 100 Series Size: 4-String Color: Red Metallic
Better than expected, amazing for the price, very powerful for a passive only bass and the metallic red is darker and better than I expected it to be, I should have started with this one rather than the ibanez gio. I wanted to get a decent 4 string without spending too much. Even for somebody who plays multiple 5 strings including a fretless that i mainly play, this bass plays and sounds just as good as my expensive active pickup ones ... show more

  • Great value for the money!
Style: 100 Series Size: 4-String Color: Black
I've been playing bass and guitar for over 20 years and I was looking for an affordable but high quality bass. I compared this bass to other instruments in the same price range (e.g. Squier Affinity Series, Ibanez Gio) and the Yamaha TRBX174 seemed like the best option. It comes with PJ pickups which give you a lot versatility in terms of tone. The finish, frets, neck, and the pickups are of very good quality and better than what you typically get from other basses in this price range. The Yamaha TRBX174 looks, plays, and sounds like a much more expensive instrument. I am very happy with it and I highly recommend it for both beginners and more experienced player. The only point I would mention is that I wish it came with a case or a padded gig bag but for 200,00, I can't really complain. It's definitely great value for the money. ... show more

  • A quality-made Bass instrument for serious Bass players.
Style: 100 Series Size: 4-String Color: Translucent Black
A quality Yamaha Bass guitar instrument. It has a thin neck suitable for smaller fingers and hands as compared to wider necks with some bass guitars. A set of flat wound strings will make this Bass instrument a favorite. Round wound strings make undesirable noise when fingers go up and down the strings while playing. (It's a thing with some Bass players.) A great quality-made guitar with an excellent powder-coated finish for the price. ... show more

  • Beautiful Craftsmanship
Style: 100 Series Size: 4-String Color: Dark Blue Metallic
I love this bass. I’m a beginner bass player (so don’t quote me), but this bass feels to me like it might be the Subaru of basses. I can’t afford to drive anything more expensive than a Subaru, but God do I love my Subaru. This bass feels good in my hands, and it feels reliable. It’s easy to admire every part of it. Based on what I’ve learned to look at (thank you YouTube), the setup seems to be almost perfect right out of the box. Truss rod looks perfect. Maybe I’ll tweak the intonation on one of the strings, or maybe it’s fine for now. I assume many would lower the action a bit, but I think it might be just right for me. The satin neck feels good, and the fret wires are sufficiently smooth at the ends, at least on the one I received. And although the body is now covered in my own fingerprints, which are mostly visible only to me, it still seems to get a little prettier every day. It’s right next to me, on its stand, and I can’t look at it without smiling. ... show more
