  • Works for calls, chats, location info on 9 year old
Color: BLUE
I live in a city with good cell service, use an android phone, and bought this watch for a 9 year old to communicate with us (not ready for a phone yet). This watch has all the things needed: easy one button phone calls to select numbers, a web/app based two-way chat/voicemail feature only to/from guardians, SMS text abilities (us to the watch but not SMS from the watch), useful app based location by gps/cell - map even shows nearby house numbers. My son also likes the included pedometer feature for steps. Comes with a simple calculator and calendar and customizable watch face (analog, digital, different styles). We get 2 days from the battery but that will vary based on cell signal and searching for it, I think. We recharge it each night. The Xplora app works well for me to chat/see where he is. I read some of the negative reviews and they all have a grain of caution. First, I couldn't get AT&T to give me a cheap nanoSIM card because the IMEI number showed up as a stand-alone phone (which it is!) versus a watch (they wanted $40). Luckily my Amazon purchase included a SIM card from speedtalk mobile in the box with the watch. It required a bit of time to set it all up: a) setup speedtalk account and activate SIM card (chose the $5/month option - will see how much we use beyond that) then (b) carefully open SIM slot, lay phone on its face and gently insert card/tray (card sits inside recessed space in the tray, (c) go to settings menu follow speedtalk SIM setup on paper included in the box with card and watch and then restart the phone (option to do this in settings menu) to make sure it recognizes card, (d) setup wifi password (if used) for watch, (e) do a settings > system update to get the latest qualcomm/xplora watch firmware/software, (f) go to your cell phone and install the Xplora app and setup an account, (g) follow the phone instructions to open settings and pop up the watch's QR code to link the watch to you as the guardian. After all of this setup, the guardian's phone number and name should appear on the watch under both the phone call button and the web/app Chat feature. So far, we have seen consistently good GPS locations with a few houses of his location and he has sent us chat messages from the basement of a friends house. The soft plastic screen protector on it is clearly useful as it is already looking scratched (may need to buy more of those). When the Xplora app is open on my phone I occasionally get a "network connection lost" popup but it seems to work fine so seems popup is a glitch. ... show more

  • Findings after 2 days of testing
Color: BLACK
See below our findings after 2 days of testing this watch. For now a 3 star rating based on the pros and cons listed below. Honestly I do not know if some of the cons listed depend on the watch or the GPS/Cellular networks.. The watch overall is very nice, however location accuracy, app stability and the related peace of mind for guardians is critical ... Pro’s: - Nice look and feel for a “tween’s” watch, not too childish - Easy to use application - Easy set-up - Waterproof (IP68) whereas other watches are often IP67 or less - Easy to use voice messaging and text messages back and forth between app and watch - Safezone / Geofencing feature - Watch comes with a screen protector (i understand the screen scratching easily is a concern from parents, therefore having a screen protector is probably a good thing) - The alarm on the watch works (too) well, a strong emergency siren is heard on the guardian’s phones when the child activates the SOS feature - Up to 50 approved contacts can call the watch. The watch can only call these numbers. - Nice school-mode (non disturb) feature that can be configured on the guardian app (non disturb at school, night time etc ..) - Calendar / events feature to set reminders Con’s: - Not sure yet how useful the safe-zone feature is since the GPS location is not always accurate (which is a big concern). The app then shows the child outside of the safe-zone for several minutes. When the GPS location can not be accurately determined (inside the house but also sometimes outdoors), i see my child sometimes 2 miles away in another town when instead he should be a few hundred feet away. GPS is not always working well, i don't know whether the position accuracy depends on the watch (tiny antenna in a watch compared to antenna in a phone??) or on the location / positioning capabilities of the chipset or insufficient back-up cellular towers in the area or other .. - The App is not stable on Android, one guardian was regularly kicked out of the app, more than once per day (the app seems more stable on IoS / iPhone so far). The App sometimes also shows a “network not available” message when another guardian on the same network can still access the watch’s GPS location and messages? - Unsafe features / security gaps: on the watch, the child can access (and therefore modify) APN and Wi-Fi settings as well as shut-down the device, all without notifying the guardian(s) or, even better, having one of the guardian(s) approve. - We will test this some more, however we noticed when 2 guardians access the watch GPS position at the same time, this will likely cause 1 Guardian to get kicked out of the app, get a “network unavailable message” or even simply not get the updates on the watch anymore, not knowing the connection seems to be unavailable - Unclear what the encryption protocols are to compare multiple kids smart-watches and understand what safety protocols are adhered to (As i understand this is partly done for safety, however a case study pointed out several watches are vulnerable to hacker attacks, hence comparing these features is important!) - To be confirmed: I was (yet) unable to see the device’s CE certificate and Certificate of Origin which appears published for other Xplora watches but not the X5 E-sim. - The watch seems to work OK on T-Mobile Connect sim-card in USA ($15 per month if you are not a T-Mobile customer with another T-Mobile line ..).. however location accuracy is a concern per above notes ... show more

  • A little bit of comfort
Color: BLACK
Mom of three, I recently started a new job. For me personally this means I drop my children off at their school before the doors open and some days they are sitting in the office after school waiting for me. I wanted something besides a phone for a little peace of mind. I had heard of this brand of watches while we were stationed in Europe! Pros: You add what contacts you want the phone to be able to contact period...never once have we received any messages or calls from anyone not listed on the contacts- you put them in via an app on your phone. GPS: Super easy to look at the app on my phone and see where they are. Chat: you can message and chat via the app to the watch you can also call with this feature. School Mode: you can set a time 7-3 ( for example) and the phone will not make any noises, nor can they use it. They easily daily, let me know when they get from the sidewalk to the front doors and at the end of the day when school mode is off they like to send voice chats letting me know where they are sitting or checking on my status. Cons: I found the calling to be hit or miss, It comes with a speed talk SIM card which runs in my area on the Tmobile- my phone also has random drop areas. I am going to try a Tmobile SIM card and see if that makes a difference. This watch easily full-fills what I needed it for! I will update this after I try a new SIM card AND after we do some traveling with it outside of Texas! ... show more
