  • Both my instructor and I love this book!
I am so very happy I purchased this book for my piano lessons. This became a fast favorite during my lessons as there are so many wonderful selections. Most have very helpful fingering guides and appear for the most part to be the complete sheet music. Another reviewer pointed out a few missing notations like trills and that Fur Elise only has the first section which is accurate. Doesn't detract from how great a collection is in this book though. And the spiral binding is just the icing on the cake. I can't stand books where I have to mash it to death to get it to stay open. I don't see a song list on this page so I will post the list here: Air - Composed by Henry Purcell Allegro In Bb Major - Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Arabesque - From 25 Progressive Pieces. Op. 100, Composed by Johann Friedrich Burgmuller Ave Maria - Arranged By Bastien, Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, Charles Francois Gounod Bagatelle - Composed by Anton Diabelli Ballade - From 25 Progressive Pieces. • Great Selection of Tunes
But let me start off by saying "Easy" isn't exactly accurate. While the songs included in this volume are easy, they are not necessarily eeeeasy to play for a novice. I would say that a student with at least six months of reasonably focused dedication would be able to tackle maybe half of the tunes, some of them will require quite a bit more time on the instrument before they come within reach. Bear in mind, I'm a music teacher, and my standards may differ from yours. This is not a bad thing, though. Here's why: a book of pieces should contain a variety of difficulty levels so the player can find some tunes that will come along fairly quickly, and then with that confidence, see the next level of difficulty as more accessible. One of the best reasons for this volume - and any well assembled volume of tunes - is that for a piano player, reading music is crucial. One must be actively reading - not memorizing - music as part of the process of improving, not just getting better at what you already know. Reading music truly is a "use it or lose it" skill, and volumes such as this provide enough variety of skill requirements to make the reading challenging enough to facilitate growth, as regards the more involved tunes. And isn't that part of the joy of learning, to grow? ... show more

  • Depends on your viewpoint
Nice book but it has some of the same songs as the other classical songbook. Also whether it is easy or not depends on your skill level. Religious favorites is much easier.

  • Love this book.
I had not played the piano for over 30 years until I recently purchased a digital piano. I bought a handful of books, from easy pop tunes to Elton John and Billy Joel (I have no idea what I was thinking-wishful, I guess). I found this book at the local library and fell in love with it immediately. I bought it because it there seem to be enough songs to provide long term challenges without getting discouraged or bored. Of all the piano books I've purchased I like this one the best so far. ... show more

  • A Must-Have Classical Piano Book
I'm a piano teacher and I always recommend this book after someone knows the basic notes. It has a great selection of songs in historical sections.

  • Love the spiral bound
I have this book from 1978 and I play the music in it often. I am happy to receive the newer edition with the spiral bound spine. This is a great book for beginner and up.

  • Great adult beginner book!
I am 20 years old and have played piano for a few years casually, but I struggle with sight reading both hands. This book has a great range of pieces that aren’t too hard to read, and have great technique building opportunities.

  • great collection for any pianist returning to playing or growing into instrument.
Ive looked at many "TEACH YOURSELF PIANO" courses and collections of material for the returning player or beginner. I think its hard to beat Bastien collections for playability and keeping to the original material. As far as I can tell all of these pieces are the original. Fingering notation is excellent. ... show more
