  • Well built
Style: Square Set
Very good sq. No issues so far, use everyday for machining. Nice finish, blade is deberd nicely but still a tight edge. Not bendable. Very square square.

  • Good enough for hobby, not machining, work.
Style: Square Set
TL;DR-Straight off the bat they serve my purpose for my hobbies. 1st this review isn’t for professional machinists. I wouldn’t be happy with this set if I used them to make a living. I wanted them for my home workbench were I do a wild variety of things. Things to know: 1They come packed in more than a lite coat of oil. Be prepared to clean them. 2 they get less square the smaller the size but, just a little. 3 side to side they are not square at all. Especially the little ones. ... show more

  • Not even good enough for woodworking. A joke to call them machinist's squares.
Style: Square Set
EDIT: Downgraded from 3 stars to 1 star and ultimately being returned. I originally figured these to be ok for woodworking. True, they are decently square. However, the fact that the blades are inserted into the body at such a skew, means the blade will not lie flat to the work-piece when registering the body against the side (think "striking a line perpendicular to the side of a work-piece"). On every single square, the blade is either completely lifted off the work-piece, or only the very end of the blade contacts the work-piece. These are junk. Either people got lucky with theirs or they don't use them the way that I do, and the defects can be overlooked. Original review: The short version: I am using these for woodworking and they are *just* good enough for that. These cannot even remotely be considered a machinist's or precision square. The grinding, fit and finish are simply much too poor. These just arrived today, and I immediately set out to determine their accuracy. Using a granite surface plate, a pair of known to be accurate 1-2-3 blocks, a machinist's straight edge and feeler gauges, I began testing these. In the planes in which they are used, squareness is very good on 7 of the 8. (4 squares, square inside and outside). The issue lies with the 4 inch square, in which the blade contacts the test block very close to the body and begins to run out from there. It's very detectable against a lit background, and is more than .002 - less than .0025 over (just under) 4 inches. It's also very apparent that the issue is not really squareness, but rather poor finishing, as the gap is very consistent for most of the blade length. I'll probably grind away the high spot next to the body, retest and at that time, choose whether I want to avoid the inside face of the 4 inch square. Very disappointed, as that's the square I would probably reach for the most. The blade edges are all quite flat when registered against the straight edge, except the inside blade of the 4 inch. Again, the poor finish there is the culprit. Overall, the finish is rough. Lots of little dings, chips, burrs. They will take a couple hours of careful work to improve/correct. Now, the most abysmal part of these. Not one blade is inserted into the body straight. Face the blade toward you, these are clownishly crooked. (See pictures). I am not at all expecting precision in that plane. However, this smacks of utter disregard to workmanship. I feel like it took effort to make them this bad. It pains me to keep these, but they'll be ok for woodworking. ... show more

  • Excellent for hobby use
Style: Square Set
A great set of squares for craft and hobby use -- RC aircraft, miniature structures, papercraft, artwork, and such. They're plenty accurate for that use. They're coated with oil from the factory. For hobby use you'll need to degrease them so as to not stain or contaminate surfaces that will be painted or glued. Use a household cleaner like Formula 409, Fantastik, or Windex to remove the machine oil. They're not stainless steel, so to prevent rust, rub them well on all surfaces and edges with a paraffin candle, then buff them with a soft cloth or paper towel. Don't buff them so much you remove all the wax -- you want to leave a light coating. Keep water off of them, and recoat them with paraffin every few weeks of use. If one accidentally gets wet and a spot of rust does develop, polish it away with fine steel wool, then retreat with paraffin. ... show more

  • Decent, but not accurate enough for me
Style: Square Set
I think these are worth the price. The tolerances are not tight enough for my needs, so I returned them. It was perhaps unrealistic of me to expect near-perfection in such a low-priced product. If you want a few decent squares kicking around the shop, they could be nice. But I know I'd always be hesitant to use these when it really matters. On arrival, each piece is lightly coated in oil, in it's own sealed plastic bag, inside it's own little throwaway cardboard box. No padding. All four little boxes were loose inside the outer product box (not the shipping box). I cleaned them up carefully, and placed them back-to-back, upright, on my granite surface plate. Shining a light from the rear, there was no place I could detect these were touching. I'm sure it was some tiny imperfection, and it caused light to show along the whole edge. Ignoring that for the moment, the reveal was not even. These are just not very straight. On top of all that, at the outside corner, a nasty .003+ gap opened up, because each piece seemed to have received extra sanding there. There are some light polishing marks, but the gap is the giveaway. Then I checked each of them against my 1-2-3 blocks, inside and outside. All off. Good try, not good enough for me. To make sure it wasn't just me, I compared against my known good mid-priced (not Starret) 4" double square. Yeah. That thing is just perfect. These are just ... not. So, I returned mine, but I could see these being useful, depending on your tolerances and needs. I just didn't need yet another halfway reliable square in my shop. I'm ponying up more cash, and ordering the Incra, like I should have done initially. ... show more
