The metal structure is great but the wood piece fell off before securing to cage. Would be a better design to have that piece secured with screws rather than glue.

    • Get a Handle on It

I usually shoot my videos from a tripod for stability. On the other hand, my cameras are equipped with cages so that I can hang all the accessories on that I use, like a microphone, a preamp and a follow-focus. Every once in a while, though, I have to shoot handheld, like when I’ve got my camera low to the ground, in a run and gun situation, with an external monitor. Then I use a top handle on my cage. This handle offers an ARRI mount to a cage which I find more convenient then a NATO rail mount which requires installing a NATO rail to the top of the cage. The handle also features a number of 1/4-20 threaded holes on the side and both ¼-20 and 3/8 threaded holes on the top of the handle, and a 3/8 threaded hole on the back of the handle. There is what appears to be a small block of wood on the bottom side of the handle, but I suspect that’s more to emphasize the manufacturer’s brand than to be useful. If you have really thick fingers, you might find the tightening knob for the ARRI mount in the way. There are a number of top handles for cages on the market with different features and they are almost fungible. Other than using the ARRI mount for a handle, you should examine a potential handle and insure that it has the mounting facilities you may need for any accessories you might add. I use the cold-shoe mount on the handle for an external monitor but I hang everything else on the cage for either my Olympus or Nikon cages. This handle does the job for me. ... show more

If you are intending to use this with your Eos RP as a web cam, you will not be able to use the dummy battery and close the bottom lid because the cord cannot exit the side of the case using the cutout on the camera. I do a lot of cinematography work and have a few different camera cages. I really like this handle because of the wood trim. It seems to absorb sweat a little better on those hot days. Plus the wood on the steel just looks so good and professional. The steel handle itself is loaded with mounting options including multiple threaded holes and three cold shoes, which is excellent for mounting audio, lights and LCD monitor. I also love the adjustable knob so you don't have to use an allen wrench to mount the handle. The knob is large enough that you can get a good grip on it and tighten securely.
