Description

The Woo Audio WA7 "Fireflies" (2nd Gen) Amp/DAC is a combination of high performance vacuum tube headphone amplifier with a built-in USB Digital-to- Analog Converter. It is a pure tube design, utilizing 6C45 tubes in a class-A, single-ended topology, with transformer coupled outputs. There are no semiconductors used in the entire signal path. The D/A converter is designed to be capable of up to 24-bit/384kHz sampling rates. This maintains pure data integrity, which is transmitted via standard high speed USB 2.0 interface operating in asynchronous mode. The high quality construction features include a pair of Nickel Alloy core output transformers, all-aluminum chassis with no screws visible from any viewing angles, an external linear external power supply for amplification circuitries, a custom built toroidal power transformer, and multi-layer military grade PCBs. The dedicated port for in- ear monitors carries a full range of volume controls ensuring minimal noise. Despite its incredibly compact size, "Fireflies" is a power-house outputting up to 1w of power to drive almost any demanding audiophile headphones. To accommodate different system setup needs, "Fireflies" can also be used as a stand-alone D/A Converter.

  • Who doesn't love fireflies?
The WA7 is a beautifully constructed product. I've seen that mentioned time and time again on many sites but you obviously appreciate that more when you see it first hand and more so when you actually own it. For those not familar with Woo Audio, they use high end materials and hand craft each item. Many will see the price and be scared but honestly for what you are getting, it's a deal. Woo Audio is well respected and for a really good reason. I'm no audiophile but make no mistake, Woo Audio is for audiophiles. If you're looking at this because you want great sound from your headphones than you will be hard pressed to find much better. The great thing about the WA7 is that it is ideal for people like me. People who want audiophile quality to drive their higher ohm (Ω) headphones but don't really know too much else and want to do it as easily as possible without much effort. The WA7 Fireflies is perfect for this scenario because it is about as plug-n-play as it is going to get for this richness of sound. Outside of the WA7 you are either going to build something yourself or buy something maybe from a less well known seller. If you go to a audiophile website you can at least feel comfortable it will be legit site they send you to but to be honest, I have trust issues. So what makes the WA7 so great is a number of things. Let start with its small form factor - a CD fits on top of the WA7 perfectly if that gives you an idea of its general dimension and it will be slightly taller than a mug. It looks great so if you're married the chances of your wife disliking it for looks is very small. The craftsmanship is so great that even something as simple as moving the volume dial feels great. It's just smooth. It has enough weight in the dial that you have plenty of fidelity in how much control you want. All the materials are solid. The WA7 is a lot heavier than you would think for its size. The bonus to that is that along with its weight and its rubber balled feet is that it does not move even when you are plugging in your headphones or unplugging them. It does not shift even a little. The rubber balls for feet also ensure it should be safe no matter the surface you decide to plant your WA7 on. The power supply is separate so the WA7 can keep its cube shape but it too shares the same rubber ball feet and is hand crafted by Woo Audio as well (versus a mass produced power supply), is made of solid materials and ventilated. It also the best packaged electronic I have ever received. Woo Audio takes everything very seriously. The only downside I have with this product is that it only comes with a RCA connector and not a USB one. I get it and it's not uncommon for many electronics to not provide every connector its product supports and most audiophiles will be using the RCA anyway. Still it would have been great, especially since you need a USB-B connector (one with the square end on one side). The WA7 supports USB 2.0 so you will need a plug like this if you wish to listen to music from a device that supports USB but not RCA like most PCs/laptops... Mediabridge USB 2.0 - A Male to B Male Cable (6 Feet) - High-Speed with Gold-Plated Connectors - Black The WA7 has a very neutral sound to it. Many amps will "brighten" up the music and some even tone it down but the WA7 is about as neutral as it gets. So the music you get from it is how it was recorded. The clarity is also very apparent on well recorded music. If the music you are listening to doesn't sound that good then it wasn't recorded very well. There is no feedback or white noise with the WA7, it is silent. So if you hear noise in a song it is beause that song was recorded with noise. That being said, even older music that clearly wasn't recorded with the same level technology we have today can still sound better than it did before you introduced an amplifier into the equation. It just won't have the soundstage or layer depth that you might come to appreciate from your other albums. As I said, I'm not an audiophile so being able to recommend the best headphones or headphone amps for the right person is something I cannot do. I can tell you that I primarily run this with the Beyerdynamic DT990s and I listen to Rock, Metal, EDM (mostly the softer, more liquid beats), and international music and some blues/jazz but honestly not that much. Now that I have a great headphone amp I may expand my headphone collection as I was always scared to buy the headphones that require more juice - such as the 600ohm cans. Fireflies also gets a lot of praise from IEM users so if that's you than you can be interested to. I don't like IEMs so I cannot speak from experience. One last thing, if you do buy this the setup is really quick but you will have to put the tubes in yourself. They go in with more than a little effort, so after you match the pins to the holes use a slight rocking motion as you firmly place the tubes in trying to keep your -force- perpendicular to the amp (i.e. straight down). You don't want to use a circular motion. It's ok to touch the tubes and it will be harder if you try it with a cloth as the tubes are perfectly smooth. All in all it only takes a few minutes to setup, but make sure you have a USB-B if you know you are connecting it to a laptop/PC. Also download the drivers from the Woo Audio website. If you're an audiophile than you already know of Woo Audio. If you're not, you really love music and want to hear a clear richer sound with a nice set of headphones than the WA7 is a solid buy. You won't get much better for the money. If you can't afford the WA7 than I probably wouldn't buy anything higher than 300ohm headphones but many might disagree with me on that. Just going from what I read. ... show more

  • Woo Audio was Great.
The one I received had a bad on/off switch. I contacted Woo Audio And they asked me to send it back and they would send another(at my expense). So I did as they asked. My contact was Mr. Michael Liang who was very informative. After I sent it off I gave them the tracking number and they sent me another the day after they received it. When I had trouble getting it to work with my ipod, Mr.Liang was very knowledgeable when I explained to him that I couldn't get it working because of my inexperience with amps.He took the time to direct me to a Utube Video that was informative and helpful. Plus he told me exactly what to get and the settings on my ipod. It works great and They helped a lot. I am enjoying my setup and Mr. Michael Liang and Woo Audio was great. The only concern I have is that they don't have a quality control program. The toggle switch would not move. It would have been cheaper to repair it myself. The power supply is touchy. It cuts out. ... show more
