  • The perfect beginner's violin for the budget conscious! The Witek violin is a "buy."
Size: 4/4 Color: Antique B
I've handled a lot of inexpensive violins, and I had low expectations when the Witek 4/4 size violin kit with date wood furniture arrived at my residence. I repair antique violins and use inexpensive violin kits for their parts, cases, and shipping boxes. What I don't use, which is usually the bows and violin bodies, I make playable from secondhand parts, and I donate the instruments to local schools. They are perfect for students, but there is usually much luthier-level work necessary to make them play anywhere close to an acceptable level. I am happy to do this work for free for the schools. A luthier would charge well over a hundred, if not considerably more. A sub-hundred dollar violin is usually not worth paying a luthier over one hundred dollars, if not more, to make it marginally usable. In most cases, you are far better off to buy a higher grade instrument. Also, I usually don't review inexpensive violins because they are terrible, and you get what you pay for. I expect them to be bad, and they usually are. Slipshod manufacture, plywood bodies, wildly mismeasured and terribly placed components- the list goes on. And by the way, the strings are dreadful. The Witek that arrived last week is close to the same price point as other brands, and I expected similar quality. It was on sale on Prime Day for 69 USD, and I liked the look of its date furniture, so I bought one. I have never purchased a Witek before. When I unboxed the violin and opened the case I noticed that everything was carefully packaged. I glanced at the violin and expected to see the typical plywood grain and painted on purfling, a hallmark of cheap fiddles. For those who don't know, purfling is the thin wood insert that extends around the perimeter of a violin. On inexpensive violins, it is not wood. It is paint. To my shock, this sub-hundred USD violin had real purfling, and what appeared to be a genuine tight-grained spruce top plate and maple bottom. Was it veneered plywood, I wondered. I looked in the bass side f-hole and I could clearly see that the maple grain from the bottom continued into the visible bottom plate. Wow! It was NOT plywood. This violin was made of quality, if pedestrian, wood! I was shocked, to say the least. A good instrument must start with quality materials- so far, the Witek stood head and shoulders above its peers. While looking through the f-hole, I also noticed that there appeared to be a full-length, approximately correct bass bar. This is another giant plus. Inexpensive fiddles usually have terrible bass bars. Also, I noted the presence of ribbing along the bottom plate. This is a good thing. A bit sloppy, but hey, 69 USD! The sound post, while adequate and straight, was incorrectly placed. As in really incorrect. A sound post should be to the rear and slightly outward of the treble foot of the bridge (the right foot). This one was nearly in the arch. However, I looked at the whole picture, and the violin was marginally playable as-is, from the factory. For this review's purposes, I decided to leave it alone and tune it as it came from the box. Most customers would do this, so I gave it a shot. The nut spacing (the block of wood that separates the strings at the top of the black-painted maple fingerboard) was adequate. Yes, the string height was too high, and I wasn't happy with the spacing, but at least the factory person used a string gauge and made an honest effort. The bridge, to my vast surprise, was all right. The profile and spacing were close, and the feet were an OK fit, if not great. This is a far cry from what you usually get with a sub-hundred dollar violin- those bridges need serious help, if not thrown away. The strings, of course, were terrible and in my opinion, were mostly responsible for the brassy sound the instrument had when tuned. The pegs needed additional fitting and some peg soap, but I wanted to try the instrument as-is for this review. Well, the pegs held tune and worked, and so did the fine adjusters. Long story short, this instrument is playable out of the box. I've never seen this before with a sub-hundred USD violin. The case was fine. The bow worked, even if it isn't awesome. You will have to trim some loose hair. I rather liked the little tuner, and the rosin and the supplied mute were adequate. Guys, you can't go wrong here for the regular price of 79 dollars. I'd buy with confidence. If you do buy one of these, though, a few small steps will make an enormous difference. First, order this violin along with OK strings. I understand being on a budget- consider a set of Red Labels, available on Amazon for 18 bucks, or D'Addario Preludes for a dollar more. Get some peg soap. It's also available on this site. When you re-string the instrument, rub the soap on the pegs. It will help a lot. Watch a few YouTube videos about how to tune a violin. With new strings and some peg soap, you are still under a hundred dollars, and just changing the strings and applying some peg soap will make a massive difference to you as a player. Of course, I'd have the sound post moved if it is out of place. This will help out tremendously. But it's your call. Out of the box, the Witek is an enormous value. I can't believe the quality for the money! ... show more

  • Very poorly made
Size: 4/4 Violin Color: Antique Tiger Pattern
For 90 bucks I wasn't expecting much. But one of the strings was detached and wouldn't go back on. Also the tension wouldn't work properly. Definitely not worth the money. Returned it the same day I got it.

  • Comes with a lot but struggled with the bow
Size: 4/4 Violin Color: Antique Tiger Pattern
I got this so my son could continue fiddling about with his own violin (rather than a rented one) once his lessons ended. Though the case was nice and the violin came with a lot of accessories, it was impossible to get a good sound out of it with the bow that was provided. We kept using rosin, and more rosin, and barely any sound came out. Now, when I used my son's other bow everything sounded fine, so I really have to believe it was the bow, and not the strings. Because of this poor experience I really can't rate this more than 3 stars. ... show more
