  • Nice to carry

Good

  • My first good paint
Style: 12 Half Pan Water Brush Set
I am a beginner and I’ve used cheap paints and I can tell the difference. These paint set doesn’t dry fast in the pan which means you don’t need to wet it over and over to get some paints out of the pan. When I received it I was shocked because the photo on Amazon is big but the paint box is too small for what I was expecting. It’s a little over 3 x 5 inches. And half pans are small. As a beginner I didn’t know this. I thought oh good I won’t get stuck with old paints in case I don’t like it. But no. I started painting and I was digging my brush in the pan lol because I was used to doing that with my cheap paints. With this WN cotman paint you need to gently dab your brush to the paint pan because the paints are soft and creamy. You will get a lot of paints with just a touch of the brush. I was using the #000 brush from WN and it’s a small brush but I get a lot of paint that I could mix with a lot of water. What that means is I would be stuck to this paint for a long time because you don’t need a lot of it. It’s thick and really good paint. I would buy this again. I actually choose this set because I don’t need a lot of colors that looks like duplicates. ... show more

  • Excellent value, brilliant colors
Style: 12 Half Pan Water Brush Set
As a beginner, it's a struggle to find the balance between good quality watercolors and good value. And advice comes at you from every side. Buy pigments! No, get student grade! No, this brand is better! No, that brand is better! So I did my own comparison. I went to the local discount store and picked up a Phoenix pigment-based watercolor set. Then I ordered this Cotman travel-friendly, student-grade watercolor set. I'm learning color matching with charts, so it was a perfect opportunity to test these materials side by side. You can see the results in the attached photos. Cotman student grade vs. Phoenix pigments. Both charts were laid down on Strathmore watercolor paper. I used the included water pen for the Cotman colors. As you can see, there is a bit of a learning curve with a water pen as the brush picks up quite a bit of color and lays it down wet -- I had to avoid the edges of the chart because the water was pulling the ink lines into the color area. For the Phoenix, I used a generic hobby brush. The pigments are drier, even fresh out of the tube, and I had to work them a little bit to get them onto the paper. As you can see, the chart colors are blotchier and less even. In subsequent color charts, I was able to smooth out the color by switching to a better brush and getting a better feel for the pigment, but I'm guessing that pigment-based colors just behave a little differently. This isn't a knock on Phoenix pigments; I think they're an affordable starting point for pigment-based watercolors. But they behave differently and look duller than the Cotman hues. If that's a look you're going for, they're fine. The Cotman watercolor set is perfect for my learning level. Instead of struggling with the color, I can focus on painting technique. I'm confident that the colors are going to pop, even when I'm mixing them into a new hue. The paints are easy to lay down on the paper -- whether I'm using watercolor, mixed media or even thin sketch paper. And the pans hold enough color to last quite a while. All in all, I'm very happy with the Cotman set. ... show more

  • Great box, okay paints.
Style: 12 Half Pan Water Brush Set
I love the box that comes with this set. The paints themselves are decent, some colors take a little work to get the pigment out of the pans. I swatched the colors on canson xl watercolor paper (as seen in pictures). I have some issues with the colors. As you can see with the mixing chart I made (photo included), you are able to mix a wide variety of greens with the colors in this set. You can also get a decent variety of purples and violets. However this set is quite lacking in the types of oranges you can mix. The reason for this is because, while there are two blues (one warm and one cool), this set only includes one yellow and one red. Though color temperature is relative, both of those included appear cool to my eye, which mix out to slightly dull and muted oranges. Despite this palettes potential for mixing a variety of greens, it also includes two convenience greens (viridian hue and sap green), both of which I like but are not necessary since you can mix both colors with the yellow and blues provided in the set. The set also contains both paynes gray and black, which are redundant in my opinion. Since they serve a similar purpose it seems a waste to include them both in a 12 color palette. As for the Chinese white, it is a controversial color among watercolor artists, but serves a function if you like pastel colors and don't mind adding opacity to your color mixes. If I were to choose these colors I would remove either one or both of the greens, as well as the black, and replace them with a warm red and a warm yellow, which this selection could benefit from. The water brush isn't my favorite that I've tried, it's very small and when you squeeze the barrel a lot of water comes out so it's a little hard to control. If you prefer a "traditional" paint brush as opposed to a water brush you can fit other types of travel brushes in the brush compartment (as pictured). You could also omit the brush altogether and fit more a few more half pans where the brush is meant to go. I was able to fit 6 meeden-brand half pans in that space, although you would have to find a way to get them to stay in the pan, perhaps with glue or double sided tape. Overall I'm happy with this purchase. Because of the price I won't be afraid to use up these paints for sketches and practice pieces, and when they're used up I'll likely fill them up with tube paints. If you're looking for a starter set of watercolors I WOULD NOT recommend this set. The colors included are not optimal for mixing, so I would look for a split primary set (a warm and cool version of each primary) if you're just starting out. However if you're looking for a good sturdy box to travel around with that has plenty of mixing space, this set is definitely worth it even if you toss out the paints to refill them with your own preferred brand. ... show more
