  • Major Assembly Required
Size: 3 Material Type: Wood
The advertising for this is VERY misleading. It does not arrive as a simple-to-set up folding bookcase. Instead, they ship you dozens of tiny little pieces that require extensive assembly. The entire point of a folding bookcase is that it ships in a compact form and all you need to do is unfold it and perhaps attach a few shelf holders. I would strongly advise against buying this. For the amount of labor required, you could just buy some dimensional lumber and make the bookcase yourself from scratch. You'd end up with better quality for less money and about the same amount of effort. ... show more

  • Way overpriced for the lack of attention.
Size: 3 Material Type: Wood
I guess the Winsome Wood people no longer care about quality as this is a total lemon. Note, this is the second of these I've purchased. The first was a hallmark of quality, everything was well machined and assembled. This one lacked those key points. First, there were machine gouges with a half inch wood spike between the side slats. It was varnished. Second there are several points where the wood was still rough when varnished, looks like this one will have to be marked as "display only" as it'll chew up my books. Third, many of the edges weren't smoothed so there are several sharp edges. This isn't a major fault, but drops the piece into amateur territory. Fourth, some of the holes on the side are drilled too large so the wooden caps do not secure themselves. ... show more

  • Good, but better after a trip to the hardware store...
Size: 3 Material Type: Wood
I did not really need a folding bookcase however, the reviews regarding the materials and build for the open style with stationary shelves (like I wanted) were terrible and Ikea did not have anything as narrow as 26 inches. This unit is nice but, as others have noted, wobbly. The weakness of this bookcase is due to a number of factors. First, the shelves are allowed to fold because they hinge on a screw. To allow this to happen, the hole for the screw is somewhat oversized allowing wriggle room (see photo). The other problem with this arrangement is that the threads of the screw will wear the hole larger if you fold/unfold it frequently. The shelves should be attached with a screw that does not have threads near the head so as to minimize this wear. I've enclosed a photo showing the screw supplied and the one that I feel would be better. The same type of screw is used to hold the back cross-members in place and would be fine if it were not for the fact that the holes predrilled for them are, inexplicably (unnecessarily), even larger leaving unneeded slack space to move. The front of the shelves have a hole to lower them over a pin that "locks" them in place. As others have mentioned much of the hardware is not aligned properly when installed. In this case it's critical since the shelf must interlock over the pin to provide any strength to the front side of the bookcase. Several of the pins were crooked (this could have been prevented by using hardware with two screws) and one was mounted too low to allow the shelf to lock correctly (see photo). If not locked, it is unstable. So, since I was not going to fold it, off to the hardware store for chair braces and L-braces (see photo) I went. I would recommend 1 inch braces unfortunately, the local store only had 1.5 inch. These are fine but are a little more visible and (the chair brace at least) came with screws that are too long. #6 screws,1/2 inch long are fine and small enough to be inserted (especially with an electric screwdriver) without drilling a pilot hole. I installed the chair braces under the top shelf and removed and replaced the "pins" (was even able to reuse the hole left behind) with the L-braces screwing them into both the side of the cabinet and the bottom of the middle two shelves (see photo). I left the bottom shelf as is since it is nice to be able to lift it to clean the floor underneath. I suppose, to fold it, I could simply remove just the screws attaching braces to the side of the cabinet All in all, it looks fine, is solid (can be moved around without inadvertently collapsing), and fits in the space required (see photo). For those wondering, the shelf spacing is about 1/2 inch too short to stand an album up straight thus, they would sit at an angle which is not acceptable (see photo). Since an iPod and charger (which can hold more songs than all the albums that would fill this case) can sit in a little space on the top shelf, it probably doesn't matter to most. Good bookcase for light use and even better if you want to "beef it up" a little. Hope this helps. Oh, and I'm not sure if all the cell phone photos will display in the correct aspect ratio. I'm not sure why photos taken in portrait aspect seem to preview sideways on Amazon. ... show more

  • After I put one together, I bought two more!
Size: 3 Material Type: Wood
Pro: looks good; doesn't sway or wobble; attractive wood caps cover all screws; included anti-tip kit not needed unless you have small children Note, neither pro nor con: When it arrived, I thought the wood was a bit lighter in color than the picture, but maybe it was just my monitor. Con: (1) Packed in a lot of styrofoam -- A LOT of styrofoam. In this day and age, they should have used recycled and recyclable cardboard. (2) Seemed harder to assemble than it should have been. Assembly took about an hour for each bookcase. (a) Getting the rails (at back of bookcase) attached to the sides was really tough, because the sides kept falling over. The instructions recommended leaving the partial assembly against a wall, but I found a heavy box worked better. If you possibly can,get a second person to hold things while you drive in screws. (b) All screws needed an Allen wrench. They did include one, but starting wood screws with an Allen wrench is pretty tedious. I recommend you do what I did when assembling the third bookcase: use a drill to start each screw, then finish tightening by hand. (c) Attaching the shelves required holding a washer between two pieces of wood with one hand, while putting a screw in position with the other hand and driving it with the third hand. Okay, it wasn't quite that bad, but still this was another frustrating part of assembly because it took many tries to get the washer positioned and then drive the screw without the washer moving. Recommendation to buyer: Drive all screws loosely until you've done all the assembly, and don't worry that it feels wobbly. When you then tighten all of them, it will become rigid. But you do need to hand tighten them until they won't turn any more. Recommendation to manufacturer: I really, really wish you shipped this assembled and folded. I think the box would still be the same size, or only slightly bigger, and you wouldn't have needed so much packing material. I'd have been willing to pay another $10 for that. ... show more
