This would have been easy to assemble if I'd known how to use one odd piece of hardware. Fortunately, there was, of course, a how-to explanation on You Tube. Once I saw that, I got it, and put it together in about 40 minutes, altho it would have been a bit faster with another person helping. Anyway, it got done easily enough and looks great. After there were a few books on it, I tried to move it by lifting on the top shelf, and that side of it came up. I just pushed it back down and it seems fine. I know a lot of bookcases now are a combination of composite and solid wood, as this one claims to be in the description. However, I expected more solid wood than composite based on the description and price. But when I opened the box, the first three pieces -- which I believe were two sides and the top -- were all composite. That is not what the description led me to believe, and it's not what I wanted. Also, the three pieces I took out all had noticeable dings and scratches on them. I didn't even bother unpacking the rest of the pieces -- I repacked everything so I could immediately send the item back. Additionally, opening the box filled my living room with an acrid chemical smell that took days to dissipate. And that was just from opening the box! I imagine the actual piece of furniture would have taken a while to stop smelling. ... show more

Bought this item for my office, it was easy to assemble but had to take it out to the warehouse to air out. The fumes were so strong everyone complained about it. I brought it home to wash it and it still has a strong smell. Its been in my balcony for over a week.. any suggestions? I would hate to return it becauae it is perfect for my office. ... show more

    • Handy little shelf

The shelf arrived with the packaging intact and all pieces in the box. Assembly was very easy and all screws were tightened without stripping the pilot holes. Once assembled I would say that the shelf exhibited about 2 - 3 degrees of lateral sway. After I added books this was reduced in half. The middle shelf (not adjustable) is not screwed to the carcass as the top and bottom shelfs. During assembly pins are pressed into the carcass, and the shelf, which has oversize holes, is installed on the pins. This eases assembly, but contributes to the sway that is observed. It's not detrimental to the performance of the shelf, but it was an observation. The literature promotes the shelf as being 28" wide x 30" tall x 13" deep. These are the overall dimensions of the shelf. The depth of the two shelfs is 11 1/8". The height of the opening for both shelfs is 12 1/4". The finish is promoted as antique walnut and I would agree with that description. The image has a little more "red" than walnut, but this could be contributed to the monitor. In conclusion, for me, the shelf is well designed, easy to assemble, pleasing in appearance, and fits my needs. Would I buy another, yes. ... show more
