  • Great deal on a rod & reel combo. Amazing customer service. Take care of Reel in cold weather.
Update: I wrote a note to the company explaining the issue with my reel and admitted I was outside the return window. Within an hour they responded and notified me they would send me a replacement reel & prepaid shipping to return my defective reel. Super kind customer service rep and they 100% stood behind their product which I really appreciate. Reel is here and feels good. The package was sitting at my door in the cold for a bit and when I initially opened it up, the drag was froze up again (like my last reel) so it seems the drag knob is a bit sensitive to cold weather. Once it sat inside for a while the drag knob was turning just like I would expect it too. Original Post: I bought the Wild Water Fly Fishing combo set (9 Foot, 4-Piece, 5/6 Weight Fly Rod and Reel Combo Set) back in early November 2020. I didn't actually get out on the water and use it until late November. Since then, I would estimate I used this approximately 10 times in the Provo River (UT) and 2 times on a small pond. All of my previously described uses were very standard, nothing abnormal happened and I was very pleased with the combo set. On my last time in the river, the drag on the reel seemed to freeze up. Then it stopped working altogether. It didn't matter if I tried to tighten it or loosen it, the drag remained the same (no drag). The knob to tighten and loosen the drag also seemed to stiffen up a lot and sometimes it would easily twist, other times it felt cemented in place. It also became difficult to pull out any line in a smooth way, it seemed to catch, release line, catch again, then release a bit more. My rod is still in good shape, seems like it could still go for a long time so that's good news, but with the reel being broken, I'm sitting out from good days on the river until I can find a new reel I like. When the reel did work, I found that this rod & reel were an awesome set and did the job I expected them to do. I caught probably 15 fish on it and had a good time while it lasted. So it's not all bad. Bottom line: If you're looking for a fly fishing rod & reel combo to get you started in fly fishing, or if you want to have an inexpensive backup rod & reel in case something happens on the river, this may be the perfect option for you. If you're planning on using this for a whole season--I haven't made it that far with it so I have no helpful info. Of course, it's possible my situation could be the anomaly so maybe others aren't having the same problems. I like what this company is doing so I'm not trying to come down on them, just trying to write a review I myself would find helpful. I'll send a note to the company via Amazon and if I end up hearing anything from them I'll update my review. I'm just outside the predetermined return window so I don't have any high expectations. ... show more

  • An Honest Opinion
I bought this rig when deciding after a long time to give fly fishing a try as a serious hobby. I've fly fished before when I was a bit younger using a Walmart $40(?) set up with the wonky plastic reel and super stiff rod and remembered it breaking after the first use when I landed something bigger than a minnow and was a bit hesitant considering other fly rod/reel combos are around $150 and up but I didn't want to pick up something super expensive in case it turned out to be something I wasn't interested in after a couple months as it sometimes happens for me. I've used it 2 saturdays in a row for a few hours each and I think I can honestly say this is definitely a quality combo at a great price considering all the higher priced ones. Granted I didn't land the biggest trout in the state of MO but I didn't have any issues with the reel binding or the drag slipping as I was bringing the fish closer to the bank. The only reason I gave this a 4/5 is the fly line itself. Most fly lines you buy come with a welded loop at the end where the leader attaches and they're connected with a loop to loop style square knot which is easier for newer anglers like myself to get around with when it comes to changing leaders to accommodate certain flies/fly sizes. These come with a snelled leader to fly line connection which means if you need to change your leader you will have to cut your fly line/leader knot and re-tie the snell which can be a pain if you've never done it before. Believe me on this as I had to do it to change to a larger leader. And before I changed my leader I was having an issue where my fly line became a bit waterlogged and started to sink below the surface which happens when the end of the line has been cut and not sealed in any way. Not sure if they don't do it in the factory or if mine just didn't have it done but it happens. But after switching to a Scientific Angler Air Cel floating line (which made my cast a million times better over the stock line along with having the welded loop which didn't let water into the line) I no longer have any complaints with the rig. I haven't used the flies as I preemptively picked up a Ventures Fly Co. essentials fly box but the patterns in the Wild Water kit look very similar and I would assume they would be able to catch fish as the VCF flies have. If you're on the fence about picking this up I would recommend it to anyone who asks but would just recommend changing the fly line to the Air Cel as it's the best quality budget fly line I was recommended by Mad River Outfitters who also told me how to change it out properly. Hope this helps! ... show more

  • OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE....#1.....No Questions asked !!!
In shipping the box was totally destroyed. Upon inspection of the rod and reel, the reel did not survive. The hard case protected the rod, but the reel is secured in the attached soft pouch on the case. Either a manufacture glitch, or the reel got slammed in the mail. There was a dead stop when winding the reel...as if the barrel holding the inner spool was bent....a hard rubbing stop, than slight grind and release. I contacted Amazon immediately and received an EXCHANGE ORDER. I checked 4 hours later on my order and it was "shipped" and the next day "IN TRANSIT". It arrived 4 days later (very good where I live). I held shipping the broken set back untill the new one arrived....just incase something else was wrong I could switch and not cost the company excess shipping cost. THE NEW REEL ARRIVED 100% IN EXCELLENT WORKING ORDER. NO QUESTIONS, NO PROBLEMS, THINGS HAPPEN, AND NO COMPLAINTS FROM THE BUSSINESS. They just shipped a new set without even recieving my bad one. THEY TOOK ME BY MY HONOR....I RESPECT THAT IN A BUSSINESS !!! It wasn't there fault shipping bent my reel, but they made it right NO QUESTIONS ASKED !!! ... show more
