Description

Why do we fish? Humorous and fascinating stories by ten experienced fishermen (and women) answer that question. We hook fish; they hook us. It’s that simple.Yet, the subject is deeper than it appears. Nationally recognized fishing writer Robert U. Montgomery began pondering this about 20 years ago, when he realized how fishing helped him survive the death of his best friends. Robert discovered that we fish to remember, and we fish to forget. We fish when we’re happy, and when we’re sad. We fish to bond with friends and family, or to be alone. Whatever our motivation, no matter where we are on the success spectrum, fishing makes our lives better in ways we never could have imagined. It slows us down. It sets us free. It teaches us about nature, even while showing us how much we don’t know. And fishing becomes the foundation for our fondest memories. In Why We Fish, Robert Montgomery examines the reasons we keep going back to the water and how fishing enriches us, both individually and as a society. Contributed by ten passionate anglers, the essays on these pages celebrate the tangible and intangible blessings we derive from one of man’s oldest pastimes. What is life all about? Go fishing and find out. But first, enjoy the wonderful essays in Why We Fish. Read more

  • The Oft-Neglected Question
I love to fish. But frankly, I sometimes tire of reading much of the typical fishing literature, most of which addresses the questions of how to fish and where to fish. It was so refreshing to read a book that not only addresses the oft-neglected question of why we fish, but does so from so many perspectives. I have read several such thought-provoking and reflective books about hunting (which I also love), but this is one of the few books that reminds me why I can't wait to get back out fishing and why I've been motivated to introduce others to this love. I appreciate the essay format of the brief chapters, each one can be consumed in a few minutes, but they leave the reader with much to ponder long after. I'm a professional fisheries biologist. I have enjoyed Robert Montgomery's articles and essays concerning fisheries conservation and management issues for years. I haven't agreed with every opinion he has presented, but I have always appreciated his willingness to think about, discuss, and communicate these important issues to readers and be open-minded enough to intelligently consider alternative opinions. Robert understands that these resources that we love are easily degraded and that it is up to all of us to protect them. Very few current writers are making such extensive efforts to educate readers about fisheries science and management. I was thrilled to discover similar essays in this book. Robert Montgomery is one of the stronger voices advocating for fishing and healthy fisheries in today's popular literature. This book will not only bring a smile to every angler's face, but it will provide you with much food for thought. Or you can use it to help communicate to your non-fishing friends and family members why we do what we do. Read this book when you aren't able to be out fishing. It will bring back memories of your favorite fishing trips, and inspire you to think more deeply about our passion. Bob DiStefano Harrisburg, Missouri ... show more

  • Montgomery has done a wonderful job of putting pen to paper to help explain ...
Robert U. Montgomery has done a wonderful job of putting pen to paper to help explain 'why we fish'. I am not a verbally challenged person - always seem to have plenty enough words to answer questions with (too many most of the time) even if it is to just ask another question. But - when people ask me why I am so passionate about fishing, the only answer I can come up with is to say in a nutshell is "..because it's FUN...". That surely is an answer, but not the answer people are looking for when they ask you the question. Robert's book explores the extremely complex, intricate, myriad of reasons why people who love to fish - fish. There is no one simple answer. The items in the 'why' column have a palette of reasons that rival the most subtle, complex gourmet recipes - that also differ in interpretation from person to person. R.U.M. does a fantastic job of exploring these reasons. I think from now on - I should carry this book around with me and just hand it to people when asked the inevitable "Why do you fish..?" Now I have an answer. Thanks Robert....... ... show more

  • Didn't Get A Bite
It is unusual to find a book of fishing essays not written by a devotee of fly fishing As a warmer water angler, mid-west fisher type, who chases bass, walleye, northern, and what ever else may be fooled by my offering to the fish gods, I looked forward to reading this book. Montgomery personally writes 40 of the 50 essays, with contributions from others, well known and not so well known. Sadly, I found many did not answer the question posed in the title. Too much politics, too much decisivnees, and not enough expression from the heart about the actual scene and experience of fishing for me. When telling fishing stories, footnotes are not needed or wanted. We all know how much truth is in a fishing story. However Montgomery drifts way off target in his, too numerous for me, commercial and political opinion essays. If one chooses to write that type of article and quotes studies or reports, then footnotes are a must. Example: Page 82 has a reference to and quotes a study by German, Swiss and U.S. Researchers, but no reference. Name calling and defining the opposition are not helpful when you need to have your ideas understood by the opposition Too many essays extol the virtues of B.A.S.S. and the reputed contribution of competitive fishing to angling. What's overlooked is that the non-angler or casual observer sees $70,000 boats, $50,000 two vehicles and thinks, “This is what I need to fish?” Have all the new “hulls, electronics, ….specialized rods, reels, baits, tackle boxes, sunglasses and clothing (clothing? p. 140) contributed to the actual appeal and enjoyment of fishing? In my opinion, no and has in my mind been a detriment. Not sure what to make of another name calling essay, Fulfilling The Inner Fisherman by Dr. Bruce Condense (p53). He says if the fishing instinct “isn't embedded in your soul, you can be a successful angler but never a true fisherman.” He may have been headed for deep water, but I think he ended up on a rock reef. Actually, not a bad place to be if you are fishing for smallmouth. ... show more

  • I found the book easy to read
From the beginner to the Professional angler, Robert nails the reasons why we fish. I found the book easy to read, and very informative. As anglers we enjoy fishing for many different reasons but Robert helps the reader to understand that there is so much more to fishing, than just wetting a line. There are so many things that don't grab our attention in fishing, that without a full understanding we could possibly lose many of our rights as anglers. This book is a great read for anyone who enjoys fishing or just being out in the Great outdoors. Thanks Robert. 5-stars. ... show more

  • Good read if you have a passion for fishing.
I enjoyed this book because it wasn't just a story about the one that got away, or how the tournament was won with a giant bass. This book took you into why we have this passion for fishing as well as many other topics. I would give it 5 stars but because it is non-fiction and many views from different people, it was a little slow reading in a few parts. ... show more
