  • Every leader/manager with hiring responsibility should read this book
In my first career, even after 10 years in corporate leadership roles, I had no idea how to hire well. No one had ever taught me - or any of my colleagues. HR would respond to our requests with candidates. I would do too much of the talking, not know what questions to ask to surface what I needed to know and base my decisions on gut feel. My gut was good for picking out nice, well-intentioned people, but not necessarily the highest performers. (As Beth puts it, I didn't need good people, I needed good employees!) If only I had Beth Smith and this wonderful book in my pocket back then! Now, many years later, as a business consultant, I often advise my clients on the expensive and painful aftermath of weak hires. There is nothing more important in business than making good hiring decisions. And there is no way to do that without strong interview skills. This excellent, easy-to-read, wisdom-packed book provides the roadmap every hiring manager needs to up level their game. • Fun Read! Immediately Applicable!
Beth Smith is smart, witty, fun, and insightful. She tells it like it is. The author beautifully articulates the all-to-common pitfall (overworked hiring managers desperate for relief, combined with the job candidate's need for survival) that leads to a poor job fit...without casting blame on anyone. She helps hiring managers to understand the value of waiting for the right candidate as opposed to trying to force a good fit by choosing the best of several candidates who interview for a given position. She takes it further by giving the hiring manager the skills to FIND the right fit. Read Beth's book and you are guaranteed to minimize turnover, create a more positive and productive work environment, and hire the right people who genuinely enjoy the job you are hiring them to do. I actually gifted this book to my manager (I admit it's strange to give a book with this title to your own hiring manager) She loved it! She is following the tips outlined in this book to complete the hiring of our sales team. Beth Smith really knows her stuff, and I am grateful to have found this book!!! ... show more

  • Helped me hire a great team member
Faced with my first hiring opportunity, I wanted some advice. A mentor and friend suggested this book, which I read closely and followed. Very helpful and now almost a year later, I am very happy with the results of the interviewing/ hiring process and even more happy with the person I hired.

  • Concise, practical, and promising.
The principles are clearly communicated, make great sense, and set you up for more than just the hiring moment. I'm so excited to put this into practice for our next hires. Our organization is ready for the kind of "good fits" this system promises.

  • This should be every managers bible
This book is smart, funny and oh so accurate. As a restaurant owner I made every mistake in 'the book'. I wish I would have read this when we first got the restaurant, it would have saved us so much stress, heartache and money!! I can not recommend this book enough for anyone who is in an HR position or management. This is a must have!! ... show more
