  • different but perfect convenient alternative for traditional boba
I tear the top all the way off, microwave it upright in an empty mug for 30 seconds, let it cool for about a minute, then put in the iced drink to cool down faster, let it 'rest' for at least a minute in the ice and the texture is great. not letting it cool down means it'll be too soft. they are more of a gelatin-gummy texture than your typical tapioca boba, but i don't always have time to boil a single serving for 10-20 minutes, so these are the perfect convenient alternative, but you'll be disappointed if you think 30 seconds in a microwave will get you an exact replication of regular boba (when does microwaving anything ever compare to conventional cooking??). Also I think the price went down because they expire in Nov 2021 and were mfg 8/2020, but I can go through 60 before then even if I don't have one every day, I don't think this price can be beat! ... show more

  • Easy to use but flavor/texture is not ideal
When I first tried these, I really disliked them. The texture isn't as good as boiled boba (and yes I tried various microwave times and also boiling the instant packet... the texture just isn't as good.) Also, the sugar sauce they are in I find really not a good flavor. That said, we end up using these all the time because they are so easy to pop in the microwave and throw in a drink. And if I rinse them thoroughly with cold water in a strainer I can get rid of the yucky syrup before putting them in the drinks. My daughter doesn't mind the syrup flavor as much and my son prefers to rinse them like I do. So when I first tried them I would have given them only 1 star. But since we use them constantly, I have to say that the "instant" quality ended up being worth the purchase. And rinsing them really helps. If you love boba and don't have time to make your own, this is a good option. ... show more

  • Easy and quick
This instant boba is easy and much quicker than boiling pearls. Obviously it's not going to be the same as making fresh pearls, but it's great for when I or someone else in my household just wants one serving. It's similar to most instant boba I've had and the taste is pretty good. The way I prepare it is by emptying the boba into a microwave safe bowl and heating it for 30 seconds. You don't want to over heat it! Then I put ice on it and store it in the fridge while I make the tea. Cooling helps stiffen the pearls a bit so it's not mushy. If i'm doing a frozen drink I don't need to cool it before hand. This process above of cooling and making tea takes about as long as it does to just boil pearls normally, so the instant boba is a nice time saver. If you like having boba very often making a big batch of normal pearls for the week might be a better way to go for you, but if you're like me who has a drink once a week or less this is easy and I don't end up over making and wasting pearls. ... show more

  • No good cook time.
There doesn't seem to be a good way to cook these. Usually you can just cut a hole and put them in the microwave for 25 seconds. These ones I've tried at 10-undercooked 15-undercooked 18-overcooked-with like three completely undercooked. 20- Overcooked and old gum texture. 25- overcooked and old gum texture. ... show more

  • Bad taste and texture - can't return so beware
These had a crumbly texture and odd taste. It's pretty much because the boba has been made too long and gets hard over time, and partly the taste of whatever they use to keep the boba and sugar packets from spoiling. Sadly, you can't return it either so I ended up throwing away all but the two packets we tried along with my money. Better to buy some good quality 5 minute boba and make it fresh. ... show more

  • Gummy texture, pasty flavor- overall not impressed
I ordered these hoping they would be as good as, if not better, than the Boba Now instant boba I've tried in the past, as they come in the same little microwave packets (just more expensive). The Boba Now ones are hands down 10x better than these. These just have an odd, gummy texture, almost like a gummy bear that's sat in water all day...not quite dissolved, but not solid either. And if you have too many (read, more than one) boba in your mouth, they turn into a gummy paste when you chew, making it near impossible to swallow without drinking half your liquid! I've tried letting them sit in my cold drink for 5 minutes and the texture doesn't change. Pity I can't be refunded for this, as $30 for something that I've only used one time, and will more than likely trash the rest, is a waste....but I'll just stick with the Boba Now instant boba when I want quick, and the 5 minute cook pearls when I have time. ... show more

  • Surprisingly good
I was apprehensive about buying these with all the scary reviews. I figured that I work at a university and if I didn't like them then maybe some of the students would so they wouldn't go to waste - might as well order one. I'm glad I gave them a try - they are a great alternative to going out and def. a lot cheaper! Keep your expectations tempered and you won't be disappointed. Texture: The microwave time is the tricky part. I put the open pocket in a mug of water for more even cooking (I recommend this tip/step) and after checking a few times found I needed over a minute for everything to soften equally. Start with 20/30-second bursts and keep checking for hard lumps or light spots. I like my boba on the chewy side so I just poured a cool beverage on top and was fine with the texture out of the microwave. I'm sure letting them cool down or adding a colder beverage with ice would firm them up a bit. I'm just glad they are tapioca texture and not the crystal boba type. Flavor: I thought the flavor was pretty good for packaged food, def. a brown sugar taste, not too artificial or anything. Just don't expect a deeply developed molasses-like brown sugar flavor, you will have to put in more work for that. Quality: I was particularly nervous about the damaged, gross spoiled packages in other reviews, but I flipped through the packages in my box and they all look OK. ... show more

  • So so
It's convenient but is it just as good as when you boil it or is the time you save worth being less in quality? Nope for me. It's just too inconsistent and a sloppy mess out of the microwave. It's just too hard to make a quality boba from microwave. They need to go bad to drawing board or give different directions. I did have better results just leaving it in hot water for 15mins but then what's the point if you do that. ... show more
