  • Prepare for delivery
Style: 14500 Watts - Tri Fuel
Delivery: After you order, you'll be given a delivery date and have an opportunity to leave a phone number. I'm sure it depends on where you live but don't expect a call or text before the truck shows up at your door. Prepare to be home the entire day of delivery. I found the tracking link provided by Amazon to be helpful, will show a map of where the truck is and how many deliveries are before you. I suspect if no one is there to meet the truck, they'd leave the product at the end of your driveway. In my case, I had a pallet with wheels mounted to the bottom I was able to wheel to the back of the truck. The truck crew gladly dropped the 250lb box on the pallet for me! Uncrate experience: Was a bit challenging with only one person. I was able to open the cardboard box on both ends and slide the generator off the pallet bending the flap on the cardboard slightly and lifting the pallet on one side. Mounting the stabilizers and wheels was not difficult. Be prepared to rest the generator frame on a 4x4 or stack of wood to mount the stabilizers. The appropriate size wrenches are provided for the nuts and bolts. The wheels don't need any tools. Installation should not take more than an hour. Startup: First will need to put oil in the crank case. The oil provided is exactly what the manual calls for, 1.26 quarts. I could not use all the oil provided, was spilling on the floor. Perhaps exactly 1 quart would do. I charged the battery overnight with the 120V adapter provided. I chose to start it up the first time using propane. I turned on the battery and starter circuit (switch) and used the fob to start it. No issues whatsoever. After running about a minute, I switched on the power breaker and added a shop fan and work lights for a dummy load. After about 10 minutes, I stopped the generator to check the oil level and found it did not change much. There is a maintenance run-time meter on the LCD display but I found it doesn't remember this time after the battery switch is turned off. I assume that the lifetime hours meter is non-volatile but time will tell. Quietness: I would say it's about as load as a typical lawnmower. At some point, I may try to build/buy an enclosure for it. So far, no issues and will have to see how it performs during the next power outage. ... show more

  • Great whole house backup
Style: 14500 Watts - Tri Fuel
Most of the time growing up I remember when the storm knocked out the power we would have to get out one of a series of small gas generators, pull on the starter until we had to trade off pulling, string extension cords around the house to the sump pump and freezer, then someone staying up to refill the gas in the middle of the night. The power was far too unstable to run most appliances...this is what I thought portable generators were. For a while we had a backup generator, and while that ran the whole house, the power was still unstable and it eventually burned out its stator outside warranty. Not wanting to spend the kind of money natural gas backup generators cost now, I decided to wire in a panel backfeed breaker and give this portable generator a chance. I'm glad I did. This is my first generator with push to start, and it is amazing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not old enough to need it, but I am absolutely old enough to appreciate it. The natural gas option for fuel is a game changer. Not having to stop to refuel or risk spilling gas on a running generator is good, but not having to drive to the gas station and wait in line to fill fuel cans with everyone else in the storm is even better. I wasn't sure about the capacity of the generator on natural gas, but it hasn't been a problem yet. You can hear it when a heavy load kicks on, but it doesn't dirty up the power enough to even make the computer's UPS start beeping. Even the backup generator I had would cause issues for most UPSs, but I've yet to hear them on this one. The main issue with this being a portable generator is having it sit out in the rain and the fact I still don't sleep that well with it running overnight due to it being...well...portable. This should be solved by building a small shed for it on the old generator pad. That might also help with the other issues of it being a portable generator...namely that I still have to drag it out in the rain/snow to set it up (and this thing is not light), and it is loud when running. Otherwise, I've no real complaints. In the end, having used it a few times for a couple days each, do I still feel like I did the right thing going with this portable generator over replacing the backup generator? For me the answer is a definite yes. This is a completely different experience from what I've previously had with portable generators. I was thinking that I would be sacrificing a lot to not have to dig deep for the cost of another backup generator, but with a little more work in a shed to house it the only real drawback is that I'll need to be here to switch over the breakers and start it. I do wish the automatic starting boxes from Westinghouse were a bit more modular so I could figure something out with a split-phase transfer switch, but I can make this work. ... show more
