  • Black Racer GT is an AWESOME Axe!
I'm blown away by how nice the black GT Racer is. Beautiful design and attention to craftmanship from WestCreek. I used to have a higher-end Epiphone SG that I loved playing -- similar models go for about $750 these days -- and I did not expect a $220 guitar from China to be its equal. But it is! I'd just as soon play this Racer as a Gibson SG that costs ten times as much; I suspect the only appreciable difference would be the cost of the pickups. My Racer arrived in flawless condition right out of the box. I expected to spend a lot of time doing my own set-up, so I was amazed at how well everything was constructed and set up already. I prefer the lowest possible action, and the Racer was set super low. So low that it had a little buzz in only the first fret, which I easily eliminated with about a quarter turn of both screws that raise the saddle level. Intonation needed a slight adjustment. Both before and after my action adjustment, the notes at the 12th fret went a few cents flat on the low E, A, and D string. I easily fixed this with several turns of the individual saddle screws on those three stings, and didn't need to do a thing to the other three strings. I only mention these details to illustrate how minor they are -- they took a very leisurely twenty-five minutes to get sorted -- and in what great shape this guitar arrived at my door. The neck needed no adjustment, the frets feel perfectly smooth and rounded along both sides of the neck, the electronics have zero problems, the finish is uniformly gorgeous, and I can't find a single detail to be unhappy with. If you prefer an ultra-light electric, you might find the Racer a bit on the heavy side. Like an SG, it has a mahogany body, and it has some weight to it. I am guessing the maple neck is a set neck (glued into place), because it certainly isn't a bolt-on. The result is a guitar that feels like a solid slab, and you can feel the neck and body resonate as one when plucking the open strings. The weight, when standing to play, is not as well-balanced as my old Ibanez Iceman (another amazing guitar in the $750 range that the Racer would hold its own against), but better balanced than my old ESP Baritone Viper (which was awesome but a bit of a beast). Overall, the weight and balance are comparable to an actual SG, and quite comfortable for me. I find that when I'm sitting to play, a little boost under my right foot supports the guitar and gets everything in the most comfortable position. The fretboard feels very close to flat, which I prefer and am happy about, but you might consider this fact if you prefer a more Strat-style neck with a noticeably curved radius. The curve and shape of the back of the neck feels super comfortable in my hand, as does the width. My hands might be on the smallish side for guitarists -- I can't do huge stretches like Van Halen, Hendrix, and Holdsworth -- and I'm an unremarkably average 5-feet-9-inches build. So, maybe someone bigger or smaller than me might have different feedback on the neck shape and the overall weight. It's important to find a guitar that fits you personally. If WestCreek ever wants to do their version of an Iceman body style with this quality of craftmanship, I'll be one of the first to buy it. For now, I am having a blast re-learning "Midnight" by Joe Satriani on this axe. She's beautiful. ... show more

  • The Westcreek Racer is hands down the best guitar you can get for this price!!!
Color: Bumble-B
The media could not be loaded. What's there not to like about this guitar? Absolutely nothing. Mahagony body, Bone Nut, Finished fret ends. Just those 3 things you will rarely find on a guitar in this price range. Couple those things with an incredibly tasteful cool shape, a great finish, an overall killer vibe and you have the quintessential best bang for your buck. It showed up in 2 days, boxed very well. When I opened it, the action was nice and low, no fret buzz of any kind and the intonation was spot on. It plays, sounds and looks awesome. I Highly, Highly suggest you get one!!! I will be rocking out on this thing for years to come. Way to go Westcreek, for making an incredibly affordable guitar with such quality!!!!! Thank you. ... show more

  • Great price. Fit and Finish could be better.
Color: Bumble-B
For the price, this guitar is very nice. The fit and finish, however, is not great. The binding on the bass side of the neck at the first few frets was very rough — though the rest of the binding was smooth. This could have been fixed in a couple of minutes, but for some reason was not. The finish on the back of the guitar near the strap button and on the horns was also not fully buffed out for some reason. Finally, the frets were not leveled as well as they should have been, leading to random buzzing notes throughout the fingerboard. Although there are issues, they can be addressed. That said, the guitar is very resonant and sounds quite good unplugged. Plugged in, the pickups are not bad (especially considering the price). As a beginner's guitar they will certainly get the job done. The switch and pots are smooth. The tuners get the job done, though they do feel a little loose when tuning the guitar. The bridge does its job, and the intonation was good and the action was low. The neck is a medium C profile (0.85" @ the 1st fret, 0.91" @ the 12th fret) at least on the guitar that I received. It is not too thin. It fills the hand comfortably. For the price, it is quite nice. It even compares favorably with some higher priced instruments. It would be nice to see an option to bundle the guitar with a gig bag or case. ... show more

  • Nice guitar
The paint is shiny and is more like a metallic dark slate or very dark gun metal color, which is even better than expected. There is only one flaw in the finish at the top of the neck pickup (see pic), it looks like they naught have over tightened the screw, but it took me a little time to even notice and it doesn’t bother me. The neck is easy to play with total clearance to the 22nd fret. The neck feels like an older style Jackson neck and fretboard. Has stainless medium/jumbo frets that are rounded on the ends, but even smoother feeling than others I’ve played recently. The inlay work is fantastic and like you’ll see in a guitar 4x this price. There is a serious amount of buzzing coming from 1-4 frets on all strings because the nut isn’t properly filed down. Also the intonation on the D and A strings is off slightly. And a few frets need to be leveled. Not a big deal for me because I’m going to change strings and set everything up properly. If you are getting this for a beginner you should definitely have someone set it up for you and it’ll play like a dream. Well worth the money and a great playing guitar at any skill level. ... show more
