  • Best Wifi Dimmer I've ever used (and owned!)
This switch never lets me down. I have other brands of Wifi switches that work on and off with Alexa and Google Home. This switch works every....single....time. I won't go into too much detail. It was very easy to install because it comes with the colored wires that I simply matched to my outlet. Because the wires come from this device, I just had to pop the cap on and voila, that's it - vs. other switches where I have to take the wires, re-twist or shave them and put them into a slot in the switch. Software is dead easy to use. You can't possibly mess up installation. Has some pretty nice modes and settings for automation after the fact. One mode I really like is auto-off mode. My home is semi automated. I have Amazon Echos AND Google Homes in almost every bedroom. I have wifi bulbs all over the place. Every closet and bathroom has an occupancy/vacancy sensor which turns on when someone goes in, stays on for as long as they're in there and then goes off shortly after they exit. You can't really use an occupancy sensor with a bedroom, well, you can, technically. You can use something that you manually turn on and will stay on for as long as it detects motion and turns off automatically when you leave. I wanted a dimmer for my master bedroom and it's very nice to know that I can enable this sort of behavior with this device when I want it. This is a bit more expensive than others you may see out there but in many ways, it's very much worth it. I will wait until it goes on sale and buy one for every bedroom in my home eventually. ... show more

  • AMAZING PRODUCT!
AMAZING PRODUCT! I have waited for quite some time to find a wi/fi switch that can be dimmed. I have outdoor lights around the top of my home and the switch to turn them on and off is on an upper floor which made it very inconvenient to turn them on and off. I also like them to be slightly dim as it provides a better ambience around the house. I have had zero issues with the app and turning the lights on/off/dim using my iphone. I was originally concerned that my wi/fi signal wasn't strong enough where the switch is located (1-2 bars). I gave it a shot anyway with the idea I may have to buy something to boost the signal. Luckily the light works perfectly with less than ideal wi/fi strength. Installing the app on my phone is straight forward and took less than 5 minutes. With the app you can also label the lights and set timers. The labeling is handy as I plan to purchase a couple more for different areas now that I know they work. I am not an electrician but installation was not difficult. The directions are easy to follow. I had no issue with the new switch fitting in the plastic box. The product DOES require a neutral wire. When I first took the old switch off I did not see a neutral wire. I watched a youtube video and saw where many times the neutral is coiled up way back in the box. The video was correct and the neutral was there just not easy to see. I turned the power off at the fuse panel, followed the included directions and in less than 15 minutes had the light working. I would definitely recommend this product and personally will be buying more. ... show more

  • Solid dimmer switch w/ great build quality but marred by unreliable wifi and cloud app
Update: 6/5/2021: Switch disappeared from the Wemo iOS app, cannot reset by pressing the bottom bar under the switch. Had to reset the breaker or remove the switch from the wall and pull the neutral wire from the switch to reset. Reducing to 1 star. Had similar experiences with 2 of Wemo's different wall plugs where they just disappear and need to be reinstalled. I highly recommend people stay away from Wemo devices. There are many more reliable and responsive switch and plugs from other brands that are well less than half the price. The physical build quality of this switch is one of the best out there. In my opinion, it is one of the nicer looking designs I've come across. The touch sensitive slide to dim feature might not be for everyone, especially people who are OCD or have kids. The bright white touch surface gets dirty or oily rather quickly. Installation and setup is easy and pretty standard for someone who has installed a smart switch before. This switch of course requires the white neutral wire in order to power the wifi and status led. The depth of the switch is on the thick side, so if you have a very shallow electrical wall box with a lot of wiring, this might be a tight fit. When dimming from full brightness (using various branded LED bulbs), the switch has more dimming stages/steps than the other manufactures I have used. The low brightness dimming suffers less flickering, but does have the occasional LED bulb (when controlling multiple bulbs) that just goes out while the others stay dimly lit. This behavior is in line with what I've seen on the other dimmers. Your experience will definitely vary depending on how many LED bulbs the switch is controlling and the brand of bulbs that are being used. What ruins this switch (and other Wemo smart devices) is its unreliable wifi and cloud service. I've had this switch lose its wifi connection a few times a year, requiring me to reset and reconfigure it. This is not a fluke since I have experienced this issue on a different wifi networks in a different home. But the true deal breaker here is the unreliable cloud service/app. You have to create a Wemo account and link it to Alexa or Google home in order to control it using voice. However, the cloud service frequently goes down. Voice control and the mobile app becomes useless. "Smart" goes out the door and you are left with a physical dimmer switch. I was reminded to write this review today because the Wemo cloud service is down again. I haven't experienced so many cloud outages with any other manufacture of smart devices than Belkin/Wemo. Stay away from any Wemo smart devices until they can work out the stability of their cloud. ... show more

  • Junk. Don't waste your money.
After speaking with Wemo's support team I received a replacement unit for the defective one I received. Customer service was helpful, however, I wish they could have resolved the issue with one phone call. The persistent need to call me back turned into an annoying game of phone-tag but my problem was solved. I received a new unit that installed easily. Setting up became a problem because the app crashed on my during setup. I contacted Technical Support, which was helpful. **Quick tip: The "reset button" in the FAQ and online support is not the actual button you press to turn the light on and off nor is it the slide bar to adjust intensity. For me, I had to remove the face-plate and it is the transparent plastic piece that the light transmits color through. I tried to reset and fix the syncing issue on my own but got hung up thinking it wouldn't reset. Once tech support told me it was the transparent plastic, I was able to reset the dimmer as instructed in the online support. I upgraded my review from 1 star to 4 stars because I like the functionality of the switch, its appearance, convenience and technical/customer support made the effort to assist with my difficulties. Junk. Don't waste your money. This item seems like a great device. First off, the box is way too large. It barely fit in the box in my wall. After finally figuring out how to fit it in the wall good enough, I admit that I was relieved at its pleasant appearance. That was short-lived ,however, when it shorted out after only a few weeks of use for no reason at all. I had to switch back to a standard dimmer switch to get my lights back on. For about $80, this is not worth it. I will look into other options and feel others should know about this products flaws. ... show more

  • Worked very well, instructions were great
This dimmer installed without a lot of fuss. One may have trouble with swapping the live input (black) and output (red) wires, as a "normal" dimmer may work fine with either of those switched, as the dimmer just changes pulse width, which would work on either input or output. This is a relatively complex dimmer electrically, so the order matters. The instructions were good as far as troubleshooting; if they are reversed the dimmer just won't work. ADDED: Also got the 3-way switch: So, to start, this is one of the more complex installations, with FIVE wires. You do need the neutral wire, usually white, which is often not used on a regular switch. On a recently built home, this will be there, but on an older one it will not. The wires in your wall may be various colors, in my case 2 black, white, red, green. The switch has white, blue, red, black, and green. So, not a match, but the instructions were very helpful in identifying what was what. It went in easily and worked on the first try. The Alexa integration was basically automatic after using the Wemo app. I'm pretty happy with it. The 3-way switch seems to have improved readiness versus the dimmer, which sometimes has a "miss" with Alexa, working right afterward. You do only need 1 switch for a 3-way circuit. This connected to the app just fine, and you can choose whether you have incandescent, CFL, or LED bulbs, and the dimmer calibrated to my LEDs instantly. There are some limitations on current, so really you're not going to run 10 incandescent lights off this; 1-5 should be OK in just about all cases. I've also paired it with Alexa and Google Home without issue. It worked just as it should. One thing to keep in mind is that the dimmer does require a "neutral" wire; this is usually the white one behind your wall (and the black one is the "hot" line). Most light switches do not really need this, as they have the live input, output, and ground (green wire). My old dimmer did not use the neutral, and this line was sort of buried way back in the wall, with no lead. I had to tap into it to make one. Not a big deal really, but something to be aware of. It is noted on the package, so that's fair. It would probably be good to make this more prominent in the listing, though, as installing this dimmer to replace a switch or dimmer with no neutral line starts pushing this into a "medium" difficulty job rather than an "easy" one. In terms of behavior, it does brighten and dim when you turn these on/off. I'd say it's about 0.25 seconds to turn on full brightness, and 0.5 seconds to go from full brightness to off. I didn't expect this, but it's fine, and is NOT like the first-generation LED bulbs that had a noticeable delay in turning on. ... show more

  • Perfect Lighting Control with Google Assistant, not so perfect for ceiling fans
I have several WeMo products including a few of these dimmers. They work great on my LED bulbs with full dimming range without flickering. There is also a setting for CFL and Incandescent bulbs. Make sure you have a white neutral wire available (standard in most homes built within the last 20 years). I was an early adopter and have been using these since they first launched. One of my first units was DOA and I was very impressed with WeMo US based tech support who helped me to get a replacement. My only complaint is that WeMo dimmer doesn't yet have a ceiling fan mode. I hooked up 1 of these to my Minka Aire F624-WHF Roto XL ceiling fan (a great 70W max fan that comes with a horrible wall controller). I set it up on the WeMo dimmer in incandescent mode. The min incandescent dimming setting would not start the fan, so I used the customized setup feature in the WeMo app to adjust the min dimming range setting at about 12 steps from the bottom. I now have full fan speed control accessible via voice! However the dimming method used is NOT optimal for fan speed control, and results in an audible hum from the fan motor while the fan is in use. This hum is especially noticeable in the middle fan speed range (which I personally use most often), but is gone at the highest fan speed with no dimming applied. This hum wastes some energy that dissipates in the motor as excess sound and heat. I don't expect it will shorten the longevity of my fan motor, but it is a little annoying considering that the original fan controller results in silent operation at all speed settings. I would recommend only using the current WeMo dimmer with ceiling fans in rooms where you won't mind such a hum when the fan is in use. Personally, I am holding off on buying any more of these for ceiling fans until they come out with a fan specific model optimized for fan speed control. ... show more

  • Slightly too big for retrofit
I ordered a couple of these for use with LED string lights. I temporarily wired one up, configured, and tested it before installing it. I wanted to make sure it dimmed the lights without flicker. I also wanted to configure it with a strong wifi signal, before installing it outdoors in a weather tight box with a weak (relatively speaking) signal. It took me three tries to get it configured. I am not sure why it didn't work the first two times. It was connected to the WeMo wifi, but kept insisting it didn't have an internet connection. The last thing I changed before the app on my phone finally finished the setup was to turn off my phones LTE. ?? The dimmer works great with my LED string lights. The dimmer calibrates to the load, so seems to be flexible enough to work with other types of lights. I would give this product 5 stars for functionality, but you may not be able to use it at all. I reduced my rating to 3 stars because its simply too big to fit most applications. It comes with 4 small wire nuts. You can use only 2 of these. You will need 2 larger wire nuts for the neutral and ground wires, because you will joining three wires together. Depending on the electrical box you are using, there may not be enough room for the wires, the nuts, and the dimmer. I struggled for about an hour, to fit everything into my enclosure (see photo). I finally got it all to fit, but I had to be a little creative. It would have been a much quicker and easier install if the dimmer were 1/16th of an inch smaller in each dimension. Now that its all installed in its final location and works perfectly, I am a little less upset about this product. But I am NOT looking forward to installing my second dimmer. If your dimmer is for a NEW installation, get a big and deep electrical box because this monster will use every bit of it. ... show more

  • Too much awesomeness!!!
I've got about a dozen WeMo switches of various type and have been using them since roughly 3 days after they hit the shelves. I've also been using Alexa to control these devices since that functionality became available. I couldn't wait to get my hands on these dimmers. These dimmers are just as easy to install as the other WeMo devices. I installed 4 dimmers to control 2 ceiling fans (1 dimmer for light, 1 dimmer for fan). Both work flawlessly. I will mention that I had to add the WeMo skill to Alexa in order to add the dimmers; the skill was not needed for the other WeMo devices but it was needed for these (perhaps because they're so new?). I have also noticed that the dimmers respond to voice commands through Alexa a tad bit slower than the other devices: for example, I have a device group that has a dimmer and two wall plugs (for table lamps), and when I give the command to power on/off, the lamps respond immediately while the dimmer responds a second later. This may perhaps be explained by the extra "3rd party" requirement of the skill being needed; perhaps in the future if/when Alexa can interact with these devices without the WeMo skill, this "lag" will disappear. Honestly, though...it really doesn't even rise to the level of an annoyance. The "Night Mode" is pretty cool too. I use it to automatically dim the lights after 10pm while i'm doing my "night owl" thing and everyone else is sleeping. Even when you wake up in the middle of the night and turn the light on, it is still at the dimmed level. ... show more
