  • Excellent Quality High Fiber Dog Food
Purchased due to the extra fiber content because my 3 year-old, 15-pound terrier mix seemed to be having problems with her anal glands getting full and not being able to clear them naturally herself. I asked the vet if there was anything I could do at home to keep this from happening. The vet said I should find a dog food with more fiber. After doing internet research, this seemed to be the all-around best choice, and I liked the fact that it is grain free. My terrier mix has been on this food about 4 months, and it has seemed to make her more regular and she has not had stopped up anal glands since beginning this food. She also likes the taste. Due to the convenience of wanting to feed both my dogs the same food, I started feeding this to my 45-pound Blue Heeler mix also. I am not sure I am going to leave him on it because this is reduced fat dog food, and his skin seems to be drier than it used to be. It could just be a total coincidence. However, I wonder if he is missing the fat content from his old food. However, I give this 5 stars because this food perfectly served the purpose for which I bought it in the first place, it is made in the USA, and my terrier mix loves the taste. ... show more

  • Pacreatitis-friendly!
I'll start with the long story, but you can skip to the bottom for the quick version... I happen to like listening to stories, and gathering information from reviews, so I suppose I should allow others to do the same with mine! A little over a year ago we adopted a beautifully chubby (75#), wonderfully sweet, low maintenance (5yrs old and very mellow) pit-bull from our local kennel. She seemed pretty hearty and easy going, so we were in LOVE. One month later, we were still in love, but we were out $2K and giving our pretty girl sub-q fluids twice a day to keep her hydrated while she recovered from a horrible pancreatic attack. Apparently, all of the love (treats) and training (treats) we were giving to her, combined with what we thought was the best food we for our budget and her taste buds (Pedigree), caused her to have an acute attack. According to the vet, this wasn't her first, and every subsequent attack would be worse, eventually causing her constant pain from her organs being "digested." If we notice her starting to exhibit any signs of discomfort, she should get a prilosec and skip a meal or two. After hearing all of that, I did what any loving mother would do, I turned to Google! What I found was very different from what the local high end pet food boutiques told me, and pretty different from the vet-pushed Science Diet that they wanted me to feed her. Protein is NOT the issue, fat is. Dogs need protein, but sometimes they need it in different ways, and dogs with pancreatitis need to never eat anything with a crude fat max of more than 5-7% We tried different foods, spent money on broken promises, subjected our poor sweet marshmallow to more than one tester tummyache, and finally found this. The reduced fat, grain-free Wellness has kept us out of the vets office, and showed us the true personality of our adopted dog. Before we learned of her condition, she was always a little "depressed." She was slow-moving, slept often, didn't play very much, and sometimes ignored her food. She's still one of the cuddliest and laziest dogs I know, but she's so much more playful and energetic after we learned how to treat her! She has not lost weight, but for us, that's not why we bought this food. She is a bit leaner, but I think that's because she plays tug every night that she isn't feeling bad! Yes, it is more expensive than the stuff you get at the grocery store, but it has saved us cash and peace of mind with our situation. I know my dog isn't the only one with pancreatitis, and I know that it can be a struggle to find something that works and fits into your lifestyle, while giving your dog what he/she needs. Ok, so that was a lot, but basically, this food has allowed us to find a way to nourish our dog with real food without compromising her digestive condition. It isn't the food that she loved the most, but she certainly does like it. It has helped her to the point that we can even give her a treat or two every day (sweet potatoes or a piece of dried duck jerky). Try it. ... show more

  • Mixed bag of pros and cons
Well, my dog really likes this food. She prances around for it and gets very excited for meal time. She has been on it for about two months now, and has lost about a pound. She doesn't act hungry on this food like she has with other "diet" foods, so that's a good thing. So there are the good points. The bad is that this food constipates her, even with the Wellness Core Weight Management canned mixed in. The longer she has been on it, the worse the constipation has gotten. My dog Charlotte used to go 3-5 times a day (though 4 or 5 times is a bit excessive), and now she's lucky if she goes once and she strains. I checked, and her poo is exceedingly hard. Out of curiosity, I mixed some regular (with grain) wet food into the kibble for her breakfast and dinner one day, and the next day she was able to have a normal poo. My other dog is doing great on the Wellness Simple Grain-free food, but all dogs are different and I guess grain-free just doesn't work for my female dog. This food is also fairly high in calories for a "diet" food, so my dog gets a VERY small portion. This is good for my wallet, and while my dog isn't acting hungry, she finishes her much smaller portion much earlier than my other dog finishes his food. Dogs are kind of like jealous toddlers, so I have to watch and make sure she doesn't harass my male dog while he's still finishin up his meal. I give a three star rating in the middle because there are pros and cons for this food for my pets, but I do not think its a bad food. It just hasn't been an ideal fit for my dog. EDIT 11/9/2014: my dog has now lost three pounds on this food, and that's the fastest she has ever lost weight on any food. I've upped the food by a star for that. It still makes her constipated unless I add a spoon of wet food that includes grains. Due to this diet success that has NEVER happened for her before, I will keep her on this food (with a bit of wet food) until her weight loss goal is achieved. At that point, I will re-evaluate keeping her on this food or switching to one with grains, like the Wellness Complete Health Healthy Weight. ... show more

  • Great food that keeps the pup healthy and happy!
My food obsessed beagle has been eating the Wellness CORE grain free reduced fat dog food for about five years now. I am proud to say that my sassy senior impresses our vet every time we go with her healthy weight, coat, and muscle tone. She is now 13 years old but you'd never know it as spunky as she is and I think that is partially due to her high quality diet. She also goes for walks every day so I am sure that helps too, but this dog food has served us so well and even after all these years, she still loves mealtime. She goes crazy every time she hears me opening the bag! I highly recommend it. ... show more
