  • Correct Use Works Magic on White Scratches
WearMax Scratch Concealer for hardwood floors. I rarely write reviews, but was so impressed with this product I wanted to review it. The ONLY negative is that the directions leave something to be desired, possibly because they have to back them up with expensive-to-get proofs of results. We had put down pre-finished wood floors in the kitchen of a home we remodeled intending to sell. Then the market crashed in this town, and we decided to rent. I know, wood floors plus renters equals disaster. We went with Bellawood Brazillian Teak, a hard oily wood that resists wear and water, since it was in a kitchen. (That is a whole other review - short version, Don't. Widths of planks from same box varied by as much as 1/4". Horrible quality control. Had to sort widths from all boxes first and lay down rows using same width across row, then using a slightly different width for next row.) Anyway, true to reputation, the renters put a LOT of scratches in the wood. They had a medium-large dog whose nails really damaged the floor, especially around the area of her food bowl. I think she tap-danced around the area before meals in her excitement. Add to that random scratches that looked like furniture was shoved around being rearranged daily. And all the scratches were WHITE, showing up badly on the darker wood. Research turned up that the finish on the wood floor was most likely Zinc Oxide in a polymer base, factory cured under UV lights, not something available to a homeowner. (We are not pros - just very experienced Do-It-Yourselfers.) Did locate a couple of Pro bulletin boards where there were lots of complaints about this type of finish, where the most common advice was either not use prefinished wood floors, or sand all the finish off and recoat with Polyurethane, both expensive options. More research turned up this product, WearMax Scratch Concealer, which had a very mixed bag of reviews. Read each one, decided to try anyway since options limited. Applied as directed, having limited success. It worked great on the deeper, down-to-the-wood scratches, but did nothing on even quite visible white lines if I could not feel any "break" in the top coating. More research - Science this time - How does this stuff work? Discovered that many - though not all - manufacturers put multiple coats of their UV-cured finish on the wood. When damage occurs on this type finish, many little "cracks" occur BETWEEN the layers, even though the top coat is intact, producing the white scratches. WearMax (or any other product) does not penetrate this top coat, so the scratch remains. So, how to deliver the product to the damaged area? Get a syringe and a few needles from the pharmacy. I used a 6 ml size syringe, but many only carry a 3 ml as their largest size. I find the larger 6 ml size easier to handle (useful for gluing tight joints), but 3 ml will work. WearMax is thick, so get 18 gauge needles (needle sizes are like wire - the larger the gauge number, the smaller the needle diameter.) You will be dulling these, so I recommend one needle per every 15 or so scratches. (NOTE: Some pharmacies will not sell syringes and needles without a prescription, for fear of supplying addicts. Check with the laws in your state, - otc purchase is legal in mine - and go to your regular pharmacy where they trust you to be buying them for craft use. If your state requires a prescription, you may have to ask your doctor for one.) Attach the needle to the syringe. Draw up some WearMax into the syringe. It is thick, so even with an 18 gauge needle it will be a bit slow. I drew up about 1-2 ml each time. Using GENTLE pressure on the plunger, put a small drop of WearMax on your scratch, working one at a time. now firmly but carefully use the sharp point of the needle to puncture the top coat of the finish. You just want to pierce the top, not gouge the wood. As soon as the WearMax can reach the cracks between layers of finish, the white line starts to disappear, literally in about 5 seconds. Longer scratches may require multiple punctures. WearMax cures slowly under residential lights, so you do not have to hurry to complete the repair before it hardens. I worked on one board at a time, completing a second board before going back to wipe off excess WearMax with a folded good quality paper towel (Viva). Three days later, giving it time to harden, I went back over the areas around the scratches with a Magic Eraser to remove the thin film of product my paper towel left in some areas. I think this film is responsible for the changes in sheen that some reviews complained of. Remember, it does not "soak in" over intact coating, but remains on top. The result is nothing short of magical. The scratches are gone, as the WearMax bonded to the areas of separation. Tedious and time consuming? Yes. But much, much less expensive than any other options. Would definitely recommend, and am sure I will be repeating when the next renters move out. ... show more

  • This absolutely does NOT Work
I have several scratches from the foot of a counter stool on my dark wood floors that I tried to use this on. This product was actually recommended by the flooring manufacture. I followed the instructions on the package and the floor looks exactly as it did before I applied this. It did not make the floor worse, but it certainly didn't make it better. If I could have give this zero stars I would have. It was easy to use, the instructions were simple to follow, the product just didn't work as advertised. Save your money don't buy this, it doesn't work. The photo attached is the after photo. ... show more

  • worked for me
This stuff is awesome! I have some medium/dark wood flooring throughout my home and during a family gathering someone put several large scratches in my kitchen floor. I searched all over the internet to find a solution that did not include ripping up the boards and replacing them. I found this scratch concealer and decided to give it a try based on the reviews. IT REALLY WORKS! I gave the floor one application and the small scratched disappeared in just a few minutes. The larger gashes look much better and even though the gash is still in the floor the concealer helps to match the finish so that they are less noticeable. I'm sure that I can achieve even better results after a few more applications but whit only one the floors look almost new again. My suggestion is to take your time and read the instructions, patience is the key. Also, as a disclaimer, I have flooring that already had a "distressed" look which probably makes it a lot less noticeable. ... show more

  • Hit or Miss
This product is a hit or miss. Don’t know if I didn’t use it well, but it didn’t do a good job at hiding white scratches. I was hoping this would be more of a liquid filler, kind of like epoxy, to fill in minor scratches in a clear coat, and of result get rid of the “white” scratches. But no, this is more of an oily liquid that seems to wet the light so that it kinda of conceals it but not really. I also tested a small blob on a separate piece of wood and didn’t rub it in to see if it would dry and hardened, but after half a day it didn’t really hardened or dried. Maybe it only seals? 🤷🏻♂️ ... show more

  • but I am happy with the results
After reading the reviews I was hesitant to purchase, but found this product quite effective. It doesn't remove the scratch, but the appearance is less noticeable because the white line was filled in. I have many scratches from my furry child, but I am happy with the results. I was concerned because my floors are light hardwood and I didn't see anything that said it is for both light and dark hardwood. ... show more

  • Did not work on my floor at all for top coat scratches.
I have a fairly standard big box retail engineered wood floor with aluminum oxide finish. I had some scratching from where a mini fridge was pushed across the floor and one of the rubber feet was missing so the metal stem scratched the floor. I had a mix of white scratches only on the top coat and deeper scratches. I tried this product as per the instructions and it was a disappointing mix of results. On a few of the deeper top coat scratches (easily felt with a fingernail, but not through to the wood) the product worked sort of ok and minimized the appearance of the scratch. However, on the shallower scratches the product just didn't make any visible difference at all. Especially when they were more of a scuff than a scratch (say the white part is 1-2mm wide). For shallow scratches, this product did not work at all for me and the scratches were just as visible after the fact as before. Another user mentioned using a syringe to poke through the top layer of damaged finish in order to apply the product and that might work. But that's not what the instructions say and many people might be hesitant to do something like that. So I give the product 2 stars as it seems to work in some instances, but in the most basic case which its directly marketed for (removing appearance of white scratches) its a bust if you just follow the instructions. ... show more
