  • Not just for Xbox; great external drive for a PC
I purchased the 12 TB model. Not sure why the 8 TB model is rated for more products and the 12 TB model is only listed as being for Xbox. As other buyers indicated, it is detected by Windows (as 10.9 TB) no problem. I got this product to use as a backup drive to a RAID 10 array in a Win10 PC used as a media server. What struck me about this product was that for ~$300 it was very hard to find an alternative that beat its value as a 1) large capacity, 2) great performing, and 3) convenient solution. Buying a single hard drive of 12 TB capacity isn't cheaper than this drive and I would still need some sort of enclosure to stash it in. I could have spent ~$50 less on some 10-14 TB WD My Book drive thing but that would have been roughly 1/2 the write speed of this drive (240 MB/s). And, though I could have cobbled together some secondary RAID array to use as a backup with multiple, cheaper disks, it certainly is far less convenient to maintain that than having a single thing for the backup solution. I wish I had bought one of these when it was priced at $250! UPDATE: I bought a second one of these, this time for my main PC. Modern PC cases have moved away from supporting 5.25" media drives and 3.5" HDDs. So, to open up flexibility for my next PC build, I have been trying to find a way to pull these things out of my build and connect them via USB. I found a nice OWC enclosure a couple weeks back for 4k UHD disk ripping drive. Recently, I kept trying to find some sort of drive enclosure to house HDDs and direct attach them to my PC. After spending hours looking at Orico, OWC, QNAP, etc enclosures, comparing USB speeds v. RAID support ... I remembered this product. Honestly, I couldn't come up with an easier way to get my 3.5" disks out of my PC case, have a great amount of storage, 200+ MB/s write speed, and almost zero hassle. I have no concerns about any noise issues as I doubt it will be louder than my PC fans under load. ... show more

  • Good storage solution for Xbox Series x for normal non-series x enhanced games
Using this for external storage for an Xbox series x This does not allow you to play Series X enhanced games but it does let you store them for quick access to the internal storage. I am going to add a 16 TB next because I have run out of space these games are just too big these days. I wish the memory cards for the series x would go down because it's ridiculous to pay as much as the console for a 4tb memory card. You should be able to use an external SSD for this PlayStation got it right I hope the new console Microsoft comes out when allows you to utilize externals because those memory cards are ridiculous ... show more

  • Fast! Built tough! Runs cool(er)!
We love the WD_Black D10 series 12TB External Gaming Drive. It makes for a great external solution for both PCs as well as past gaming consoles. I say past because the ones launching next month are going to work best with NVMe SSD solutions when it comes to taking advantage of the proper load times and frame rates. This also makes for a great general external storage solution for everything else, although there are a few more affordable 12TB-14TB solutions on sale recently if you don’t need the boost in speed this has to offer. This is the only thing that would have dropped the score on this one is how expensive it is (but only if we could have dropped it by half a star, which we cannot sadly). Is the drive a little louder than some? Yes, it can be. Is it annoying? Not really, unless you sit it too close to you are you are using it. If it is under a desk or has some distance between you and where it sits, it isn't as noticeable. If you had any experience with the type of drive that is inside, you'd fully understand this and expect it. How much faster is it? This can vary depending on the speed of the drive sending information to it with, as well as the type of files (quantity, size, etc). It varies if you are actively writing to it vs transferring a file. This is the same with any drive. However, usually everyone likes to base everything on the write speed of file transfers, and in that case, the average speed was around 230MB/s. Faster than your typical 5400rpm external drive, but not going to change your life or anything. It's just there if require the extra speed. This also depends on the drive you'd be comparing it to--old or modern, which could make the difference anywhere between 50-100MB/s faster than these other HDD options. It's nice to have a fan already inside since if you abuse your external drives with constant large transfers and monitored their temps. you'd realize many of them like to get quite a bit hot. So having a fan inside already helps prolong the life of the drive. **If you have found our review helpful, please vote it as helpful below so we know. • Does it’s job, but quite loud
I’ve had many hard drives in the past. I did expect this unit to be louder than, say, an ssd or a similar smaller drive. But wow this thing can get distractingly loud. I’ll be downloading updates and it sounds like a packard bell 368 is installing windows 3.1 from floppy. I thought with the enclosure, they’d have better luck at dampening the sound of the large drive. They did not have much success in that area. The positives? It’s a very fast standard hard drive. Internal on the Series X is maybe 25-35% faster, but comparing it to a Xbox One S - this drive is faster than the internal. Compared to much smaller drives, this drive holds its own with comparable or better transfer rates vs significantly smaller drives. But it’s loud. Not enough to hate on the drive but enough to consider acoustic panels around the drive to shut it the hell up ... show more
