The material is not waterproof, but it is water resistant--watch the video, it is accurate. It is akin to a very soft "burlap" that does not look like true linen. However, it is very attractive and works well with casual dishes or fine bone china. The only thing you have to do is make sure the color you choose complements the colors of your china. This table cloth fit my table perfectly. Make sure to measure if you're not sure. Whenever we get a little mess on it, I can just wipe it up. I have a table protector under it, so I'm not sure if it would keep moisture off the table, but I have a fancy table so I won't take the chance. I have no complaints about this product. I like the color and material. The first wash it shrunk and doesn't even fit my table anymore. I dont have time to send back nor do I want to use my energy explaining it to seller. Just beware that they shrink, not just a little but alot!
