  • Works when used correctly
I wasn't sure if I would wall mount the splitter, so I tried it first by laying it down. I think I will mount it on a piece of wood - long enough so that I can stand on it for support. It worked fine with the dry pine wood that I used. The size limit is about 12" - anything longer will not work. With the right wood at the right length this works fine. ... show more

  • Works pretty well but time will see how it holds up
I like this kindling splitter. Just make sure to use very dry pieces of wood. If you have any joint issues, this should make creating kindling easier. I'm concerned the part where the handle comes together might come apart in the future - there are just a small number of threads holding it together. I like that you can install it in out of the way places on a wall so you aren't tripping over it. Overall, I think it's a nice tools to make the chore of creating kindling a bit nicer. • Works on small pieces
Out of the box this looks great and showed promise, however, after mounting on a wall and using it, it is not as easy to use. The wood it splinters has to be pretty small (2 maybe 3in in diameter) and very dry, if I tried to do a wetter piece of wood it did not want to go through, but that also could have been that maybe I had it mounted a little high and my stretch to pull the lever down didn't get the momentum/force it needed. This also seems like if I do this co sisterly over time the hand lever could detach from the unit. I think it is okay, you will have to decide if it is good for you, since Amazon allows for returns it doesn't hurt to try it out if you dont want to go to a store to find one. ... show more

  • Works good with decent grain wood. Much safer than hatchet / axe.
I mounted it to a piece of 2x10 about 2' long. And just lay it on the ground. The most leverage you can get is putting the wood as close to the hinge end of the blade (they show in the middle in sample picture). This will work well on fairly straight grained wood about 12". I'd say no longer than that. The longer the piece the further from the highest leverage point you will be. It has a sharpened edge, but not good knife sharp. It is probably better to have it mounted to a wall. As I suspect using it on the ground like I tried it with, you can put some sideways leverage into the cutter. With it's length and the extra handle piece in, there is probably enough leverage to bend it if not careful. It is much safer than trying to use a hatchet alone for making kindling. I didn't try a knotty piece, but I suspect it would be difficult with this, just like with a hatchet. If you cut your firewood 16-20", cut it in half again to use this for kindling. ... show more

  • Solid build...but defects out of the box
Pros: This thing is pretty sturdy, will be able to break down split pieces of wood into kindling. Nice that it can accommodate several lengths of pieces of wood and has the ability to add on to the handle length. Comes with some lag screws for mounting. The blade is not knife sharp, but sharp enough for log splitting. Cons: Lots of defects out of the box, bent mounting holes, chipped/worn off powder coating, lots of rust on the threads of the handle extension and plug for the mounting hole for the extension. The included lag screws are just basic zinc, will rust and corrode quickly outdoors, plus the included tool is pretty worthless for installation, but for most people buying this, they probably have their own tools so not too big of an issue. The included gloves are trash. ... show more

  • Incredible leverage!
I was a little worried that the 'blade' wasn't sharp at all. I thought maybe I had to sharpen it myself. No, I didn't. I mounted it (it took maybe 10 min, drilling pilot holes and everything) then tried it out. Very cool! Very little effort to split wood!

  • Nice
Very cool design and it works really well. It did get a bit of play in the blade after a while but I was able to tighten it up. It can be sharpened without much fuss as well.
