Great earmuffs...comfortable, robust sound boost, impulse sounds effectively controlled.
The fit is very good for my head and is easy to adjust. The controls are easy to identify and manipulate while the muffs are on my head. I tried this with a pair of lightweight gloves...can be done but not quite as easy. The head band and ear cups are the most comfortable that I've used, even with eyeglasses. I bought these muffs, in part, because of the impressive noise reduction rating, but I can't confirm the NRR without some expensive instrumentation. Originally, I had one complaint and it was significant. On the side with the controls, there is a constant static 'hiss' sound. The nature of the sound changed a little bit with different settings of the controls, but it is always there. I tried a new set of batteries, but that didn't help. These muffs are intended to be worn while I hunt feral hogs at night, using the ambient sound amplification to help identify game that is not yet in visible range. I wear the muffs almost continuously for as much as 5 hours per hunt, so this background hiss is not going to be acceptable. For range sessions of 1-2 hours, it might not be a big deal. But considering that my primary application is hunting, I have to return the muffs and select something else. After posting this review I contacted Amazon about the hiss/noise problem. They quickly agreed to exchange the muffs for another pair, which arrived the next day. The second set operates without the hiss and I think even more of these muffs now. Now that the noise is gone, I can tell that the sound amplification is most robust while in the "Power Boost" mode. This will be really helpful for my hunting application. And the impulse sound attenuation seems quite good. I haven't gone to the range with them yet, but just the snapping of fingers near the microphones causes the electronics circuit to completely cut off for the duration of the impulse. I expect them to work well around gunfire. I'm giving these muffs a 5-star rating, in part, because of the great Amazon customer service, which provided a solution to the original issue of noise. ... show more

Amazing Earmuffs, best I tried and kept
I absolutely love these earmuffs. To be clear since amazon mixes reviews, I bought the XCEL 100 that are tan and DO NOT have bluetooth. These are extremely comfortable, block more noise than most electronic earmuffs, work on smaller heads, and have great stereo and directional voice amplification. Highly recommend especially on sale for under $70. Worth the upgrade Detailed comparison if interested on the other leading brands. I bought 3 different models to try at the same time. Howard Leight Impact Sport, Walker Razor, and Walker XCEL. Howard Leight Impact Sports Pros: Stereo and directional voice amplification. Possibly best of all three. That is where it stopped for me Cons: Not great for a smaller head. Couldn't make them short enough for a good seal. Hence barely blocked any noise. Thin and not comfortable pads. Walker Razors Pros: Fit slightly better than Impacts. Still not great for a smaller head but could get a better seal. A bit more comfortable with better pads. Cons: Still couldn't get them quite short enough for a good seal. Horrible sound amplification. They are Mono, Not stereo as others have mentioned. You can't tell where the voice is coming from and its just bad quality. Really disappointing in the amplification and clarity. After not being happy enough with either of these to justify the $50 and give up my Walker non electronic low profiles I returned them. A friend recommended the Walker XCELs. Reviews were good on the 100, not great on the bluetooth higher model. I don't need to listen to music in a shooting range so I didn't care about bluetooth. XCELS Pros: Great fit, great seal, could adjust them smaller than the others. Comfortable enough to wear for multiple hours at the range. Amazing sound clarity for amplification. 3 different settings that I don't find a huge difference on but all have slightly different focus for types of amplification. The controls on the band and the cord to the side let you make the earmuffs smaller and I really like the controls on the band. Others don't, but I find them so much easier to use. And with a 4 arrow configuration, really easy to feel which button I'm pressing. The pads are thicker and block more noise. I will admit that I bought a pair of noisefighter sightline gel replacement pads to help the seal around my eyeglasses. But the stock pads were good. Cons: Only con I can really think of is that they are a little thicker as they are a mid profile and not slim profile. But because of this you get a few more points in the noise block rating. I like this since I do shoot rifles quite a bit. I don't find them to get in my way while shooting the rifles either. So the mid profile is a little bigger and adds a bit of weight, but again, not a real con because it adds benefits. Only other con is that I wish the bluetooth model 500 worked better because that would have been a nice feature, but again, not a con of the 100s since they don't have the bluetooth. Overall a great purchase and well worth the $20-$30 price raise from the impact sport or razors. Hope this helps ... show more

Not quite what I expected... Parts fall off too easily and get lost.
The first thing I noticed was the speaker for one ear, was considerably louder, than the other. I figured, "meh, no big deal, I'll get used to it". The "clamping" pressure is just right. Nice and snug, yet doesn't make me feel like my head is getting squashed like my old ones. They're also lower profile, which I like ...and they're not bright friggin red, which is also nice (LOL) Due to ammo shortages, I wasn't able to actually go out and shoot until 2 days ago (well past Amazon's return policy date). They seemed to work ok. My old cheapo earmuffs definitely reduced the decibels a lot more, but there was no speaker/microphones, so you can't hear anyone at the range, which can be a bad thing. I usually shoot out in the middle of the desert, so I don't really NEED to hear people talking, but it's nice to be able to hear other vehicles approaching, or if someone at the next range over yells for help or something (hasn't happened yet, thank god) Anyways, they were serviceable. I did however, hear a "whoosh" sound for the rest of the day and night ...and I was only shooting a 9mm AK-V and my 18" AR that uses an A2 style flash suppressor ....if I'd been shooting an SBR or AR pistol with a short barrel and a brake, I don't think they'd have been "hearing safe" and you'd have to probably wear earplugs inside of these (which kind of defeats the purpose if you ask me) ...though I'm not sure there's ANY "electronic" ear muffs that would be hearing safe under those conditions (especially if you're at an indoor range). Here's the reason I give it 1 star, instead of 3 or 4: Got home, and noticed the little plastic door that holds the batteries in, is gone. Out in the middle of the desert somewhere, no doubt ( double checked my bags and in my car, nowhere to be found). I already had the batteries in before I left, and didn't play with said door once, didn't bang them on anything, etc. There was no reason for it to come off, whatsoever. So, basically I got to use it once, before something bad happened. Kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth. At least the batteries don't just fall out really easily, sans the cover (....yet). I suppose I'll have to check around to see if that part is sold by itself, and if it's cheap or not ...and possibly using a dot of super glue to make sure they don't come out, and just chip it off with a pocket knife when I need to change batteries, then re-applying it. Regardless, I don't see myself buying another of the same set any time soon... ... show more

Walker’s makes many different brands, colors, and features of headsets. The XCEL 100’s are one of the newest and best designs. The model I reviewed currently only comes in green and did not include Bluetooth capability. Besides the headset, in the packaging was a folded set of instructions and a set of Duracell batteries. The batteries in the package had a current expiration date. The headset folds nicely for a range bag and easily unfolds for use. The instructions also unfold to a clear 5x8 paper owner’s manual . Simple rubber button controls on the left side, Power on, volume up/ down, and a mode switch. The headset speaks (English) when each button is pressed and they follow along with the written instructions. There are four modes of operation. Universal was fine for the range, Power Boost makes everything notably louder. Clear voice and High Frequency seemed to be about the same, adding a boost to the midrange toward the high end. Powered off the ear cup seals provided great isolation from loud noises at the range. Powered on the whole world opens up where you can hear the RSO but loud noises (gun fire) is severely muted. The microphones are mounted on the headband instead of the ear cups, providing much better isolation. There is a left and right microphone, providing a full stereo effect to help distinguish what direction sounds are coming from. To save battery The headset can also power itself off after a selectable 2, 4, or 6 hrs. That feature can also be disabled. It also remembers your last setting even after power off. Battery life has been good so far lasting a full day without issues. I would expect the batteries will go longer but I have a spare set of AAA’s in my range bag just in case. So far I’m pleased with the XCELS and expect them to provide years of service. ... show more

They wrok great
These things are great and really nice for the price, it's nice to be able to hear while also prtoecting my ears. Can easily talk (or over hear other's conversations), volume control is okay there are a few options, not bulk in my opinion, look great. my only complaint is the foam padding could be improved, i bought after market ones and it is a WORLD of difference in both comfort and sound mitigation. ... show more

Finally a pair of electronic ear muff worth owning.
Although there are some things that are not perfect, I gave this solid 5 stars because these are so much better than anything I have tried. I have not tried them all but I did try Walker Razor and Act Fire. The Act Fire were just too difficult to put on, they keep collapsing and do not hold adjustment and they are far less far less comfortable. The Razors are not much better and have a really tinny sound. The sound quality of these is impressive, I tested it listening to Fleetwood Mac and walking outdoors. Also the controls are soooo much better. Never liked the rotary knob and you can turn these off and keep your volume, mode settings. The digital controls and mics located above the muffs is a great idea. Only downside is I do hear some hissing but with what these can do, I am OK with it. 26 DB is pretty good for sound suppression and they react very quickly. They even instantly damped the sound of my CO2 pistol. I was looking for a pair I can slip on quickly if I need to and actually consider grabbing them in a self-protection, home situation to save my hearing. With the auto-shut-off and ease of slipping on, these just might work for that purpose. Spend a little more and get a lot more. Update: Been to the range with my Ruger MPR .223/556. These ear muffs worked great. No issues even without any ear plugs added. Very happy. Last remark, the packaging is horrible. It is an environmental disaster and is a sealed clam shell - not easy to open and impossible to reuse. Shame on you Walker! ... show more

The XCEL was a great headset for about 4 months with fantastic noise reduction and great directional sound. Go figure now that I'm just outside of the Amazon product support window, it randomly stopped turning on, even with fresh batteries. Once I fiddled with it a little, I can get the headset to turn on but it turns off when a shock is applied (ie a recoil impulse from the rifle) There's a short somewhere in the battery compartment, confirmed by the headset turning off when tapping the the side the batteries are on. I've had no problems with the Razors and really enjoyed the upgraded XCELs up until this point but for being the midgrade Walker's offering I expected better durability. Walker offers no warranty when purchased from amazon even if it's shipped and sold by Midway as they're not a "GSM branded website" ... show more

Highly Recommend, Love Them
This review is for the XCEL 100 Digital Electronic Muff W/ Voice Clarity. I never write a review when I first get a product. I feel that to do it justice it is important to use it, get use to it, and see if you are as excited the 5th time you use it as you were the first. Simply put, I am. I am in love with these ear muffs. I use them when I go to the gun range. Just before entering the range itself I put these on and sound basically disappears, which is great. But then I turn them on and the voice of the range master or instructor comes in nice and clear yet the gun sounds are greatly compressed. Not only are the sound levels great but it actually clears my head to the point where I do not feel isolated from the rest of the world. This makes it comfortable to wear beyond just fit. These are great and accomplish in the best way possible what they were designed for. If I can ding anything it is not the product itself but the accompanying instructions. There are some brief instructions but I cannot tell you what they say because the writing blends in with the background and it is tiny. TIny beyond tiny. I wish they were as concerned with my old eyes as they are with my hearing. There was one other issue, again not with the product itself, it was very difficult to determine what case would work with these ear muffs. I spent way too much time measuring and reading and trying to figure out what would work. Turns out Walker themselves has a case that fits perfectly though you would never know it based on their description. They are the Walker's Game Ear Razor Slim Electronic Hearing Protection Muff case. It says it ONLY fits the one model but it works for the XCEL 100's. PERFECT FIT! All in all, these are great ear muffs with a great design. Now that I've done the work of identifying the right case to buy, also sold on Amazon by the way, do not hesitate to buy these. If you want to listen to music via bluetooth while using these try the next model up, the Xcel 500's. Same design except has bluetooth added and I believe it will allow you to talk on the phone as well as listen to music well which I would not recommend while shooting. ... show more
