  • I love this thing!
I needed to aerate the front yard but because we had such a wet spring, I didn’t want to use one of the heavy machines. We have a new build with terrible soil so our sod was looking very rough in several areas. Our front yard is a decent size for a suburban area but it didn’t take me very long (maybe an hour and a half) to fully aerate the entire yard. I think having wet ground is essential to getting it done quickly though so make sure to water if you don’t have the good fortune of a recent rainstorm. I had a similar product at a previous house and it was much more difficult to use, less stable, and it didn’t have as much space for my foot. I’m a petite woman (5’4”) and this worked very well for me. It might not be as comfortable for my 6’3” husband to use because he would have to lean over further than me. This is very sturdy and the slightly pointed shape of the corer end is very effective. I had to stop to unclog it a couple times but even that was a fairly simple process. I really agonized over the reviews when I made this purchase so hope this is helpful for others like me that tend to overthink their purchases. ... show more

  • The reason why it's clogging on you...
I got my coring tool. Out of the box, construction was good. Took it right out to the yard and started coring - worked like a charm...for about 20 minutes. Then I had a constipated tool. I cleaned it out and sprayed it with lubricant (added to the problem) - nada. Could not get it to take a single plug after a stellar start. After perusing some blogs on the tool and clogging problems here is what I found. 1) You MAY have a defective tool - the welds at the top of the tube (what you see as you look down) may extend over the opening and cause clogging - send it back or get a file and round off the obstruction. 2) As the maker says in their instructions - "The soil has to be wet, but not too wet. You'll have to figure that one out. 3) Here is what I finally discovered that solved the problem for me - as you core wet ground, the tool seems to work well. After a few cores the tube just refuses to pass soil. What I found is that if the soil is too wet, the moisture in the tube forms a suction inside the tube and , like quicksand, it holds soil in to the sides of the tube and will not releaase the core for passage. I took the tool cleaned it out and passed some cloth patches down the tube until it was dry and voila - smooth as ice again - For a considerable time before I had to do it again. This goes back to the instruction, "Soil must be wet but not too wet." It's an imperfect situation. Bottom line, as long as the soil is the right degree of wet - it's a winner. I find that early in the morning, before iet gets hot, is the best time to core. Good luck! ... show more

  • Easy to use, sturdy, and economical.
Once upon a time I rented a commercial aerator from a local rental supply. I knew I needed to aerate my lawn because it hadn’t been done in a few years. The rented machine was very heavy and needed to be loaded into my truck and hauled home. While using the rented machine, I noticed it didn’t plunge into the soil very deep, only about 1 inch, and didn’t remove the plug (Ugh). It was a waste of time/money. The next year, I decided to purchase this manual coring tool which was much less expensive then renting a commercial aerator. This manual tool was super easy to use. It dug deep into the soil and removed the plug. I recommend soaking the soil the day before and carry a screwdriver to remove the occasional plug. My lawn is super happy, probably the nicest in the neighborhood. This particular tool was one-piece construction and made with sturdy material which you’ll appreciate. My 80-year-old neighbor borrowed the tool for his lawns and commented how easy it was to use. ... show more

  • Well made and simple
Works great if you have good soil base under your grass. You have to deep water 4-5 inches prior to using the tool to Insure that the plugs self extract from the tool. Dry, clay, rocky soil seems to clog frequently. My yard was constantly clogging the tool as it’s just a regular yard with normal soil, not professional lawn soil/loam under the grass. Should work fine to get small spots to absorb water and not run off, doing a small yard would take hours. ... show more

  • A remarkable tool
The media could not be loaded. I would buy this aerator again and again without hesitation. Worked flawlessly on my yard. A few points first; I Live in NE Georgia, very dense red clay. We received ~3” of rain two days before I used this. The ground was saturated but not wet. Our home was recently built and finished with sod. We have 3 dogs who travel the same path and have worn a very dead and very hard path in the yard. I can’t speak to this tools ability to regrow grass, but it does what is says and aerated the yard. I used this the day it arrived in the conditions described above. The plugs were ejecting perfectly and must have made 200/300 penetrations in the 10 minutes. I’ll try again this weekend, and with no rain forecasted the ground should be much more dry. I learned that walking backward, working in straight lines works best. This way you stay off the plugs as they are removed and can work rows like a farm tractor would. I made a penetration every 6-8” and despite the occasional rock stopping my rhythm did not have a single issue. Did not have one plug stuck. My ONLY critique, the handle could be a few inches taller. I am 6’1” and I recognize this is a one size fits all tool and opted for this one with sold construction rather than an adjustable handle. However I did find myself hunching slightly. Making a focused effort to stay upright will save your back. I’ll probably weld on an extended handle. Still giving 5 starts though as most won’t have this issue. ... show more

  • Too much trouble
So much research going into purchasing this. There seems like there is not a good manual lawn aerating product out there. This thing clogs up easily, a pain to use, not fun. Wastes money.

  • Good Unit
This aerator works quite well, but will plug when mudding conditions. It takes a lot of work, but gets the job done. I like the design. It's pretty easy to step-and-pull.
