This is a great product for seedlings. I removed the tray that it came with as we used this for rockwall starting. The heater works just fine and does not get too hot. My only complaint and the reason I did not give it 5 stars. Is the air damper on the top falls off constantly as it is just sitting in a dip on the lid. I'm sure nobody will change the design but to get a 5 star review out of me on this. It should be fastened some form where you can spin it without it falling off and losing it like I did at first. Aside from that is an easy fix if you want to go that route and it is probably worth doing so in my opinion ... show more

    • It really works - even for a complete novice.
I have never grown anything from a seed before. Always buy plants from the garden center but this year I thought I’d try. I saved some hot pepper seeds from last year and looked for a seed starter. Finally picked this one. I bought some peat moss plugs to go with this. Added water and put the seeds in less than a week ago. Told someone at work and he was skeptical. Gave me some crazy process of how you need to start seeds. Within a week 12 of the 24 seeds have sprouted and the others look like they are about to pop out of their seeds. I left the vent closed and just lift off the top each morning to let them breath for 20-30 sec. I’ve only added water once. Haven’t even used a light. Just have it on a counter somewhat close to a window. Overall I’m really impressed at how easy this has been. ... show more

EDIT: heater died last night. Barely had the thing running for a few days. Returning and will NOT be asking for a replacement unit. Look elsewhere until the quality control improves. It's as simple as simple gets. That's usually a great thing with me, but Vivosun/whoever designed it dropped the ball on a couple of items: I'm not sure what this 104 temp is that's advertised. I'm up in the high desert, it's 100f outside and 25% humidity. Inside my house it is 76f with 38% humidity. I've had the tray plugged in for 24hrs and it's gotten to a whopping 87f degrees inside of the humidity dome with the vent wide open. 87f is not 104f. That said, I'm using this for cloning, so am shooting for 75f so no harm no foul for my uses. Seed sprouters like to go warmer and will have an issue with this. The dome... let's talk about the dome... I understand the price point of this item and having realistic expectations as such. But what the F is this dome?! It is quite flimsy and the height of it makes no sense. I had to butcher some clones down real short to get them under that dome. Vivosun, if you're listening, let me redesign that stupid ass dome. Please. I'll do it for damned-near free. Seriously. My god does it suck. All you need to do is offer an "aftermarket" dome in two heights which your previous mold will absolutely work for. Sell the pair for $9.99. Please make this happen. 7" and a 10". The chances of you contacting me to design it is around about 0 so -- wink wink -- please allow for the option of cross ventilation. Outside of that (phew), the item is exactly what it's meant to be. Wishlist: adjustable therm that *actually* will heat the inside of the in-dome atmosphere up to a real-world 104f. ... show more

Update: I changed the rating from 1 star to 5, due primarily to the incredible customer service I've received. They reached out to me and offered a free replacement. It arrived as promised and works as advertised. Though still not liking the vent on this unit, the service from Vivosun is awesome. Thanks! Original: Heater worked exactly once, and for maybe an hour, No way to attempt a repair without destroying the unit. Poorly designed vent that is maddeningly impossible to adjust without having it fall apart and have to be reattached each time you want to use it, Vivosun fan here, just not a fan of this one. ... show more

    • A good cloning tray for beginners.
The 7 inch measurement is from bottom to top, not 7 inch clear dome, so cuttings taller than 5 inches will be cramped. Still, it's taller than my first cloning tray and I do like it. The cord is about 5 feet long, that's good, and the heater works well. The rotating closure on top of the dome didn't fit right, so I had to be a bit creative but I got it to work. ... show more
