Great Fabric Softener Alternative for Laundry

I've been using this citric acid for about two months and have purchased the smaller bags multiple times before recently upgrading to the larger size because it has worked so well for me. I primarily use it in my washing machine's fabric softener compartment, and it does an excellent job softening clothes without the heavy fragrances or residue that many traditional fabric softeners leave behind. Towels, t-shirts, and everyday clothing all come out feeling softer and more comfortable. The powder dissolves well, the product has been consistent from bag to bag, and a little goes a long way. Use it in my dishwasher — works great for hard water

I was using the Lemi Shine dish booster for my hard water. When I was looking at the ingredients it’s just citric acid. This bag is significantly cheaper, has more in it and does the same thing as the other one. I can also use it when I can food, which is a bonus. I haven’t had any problems with it, and I have bought quite a few bags from Amazon. Very happy with it so far.

Dissolves fast for DIY hydration mixes—just be ready for a massive supply

Bought this 2-lb bag of citric acid to blend into a homemade electrolyte powder, and it gets the job done right. The fine granular texture is the best part—it dissolves clean and fast into water without leaving behind a gritty sediment sitting at the bottom of your shaker bottle. It adds that clean, sharp citrus kick to balance out salt and potassium without adding sugar or artificial dyes. My only real issue is the shear size of the bag. At two full pounds, it is a lot of citric acid for personal use. Unless you're making bulk batches for a whole crew, this bag will easily last a couple of years—assuming you keep it sealed tight so it doesn't absorb humidity and clump up or degrade over time. The main takeaway: Fast-dissolving, fine-grain citric acid that works great for homemade hydration mixes—just keep in mind that two pounds is a massive supply that will take forever to finish.

Pure stuff

I got this for cleaning purposes, but it can be useful for food in some specific limited situations. The commercial process food industry uses it in all kinds of stuff either as a preservative or just to add pure sourness to their elaborate food science kitchen mixes of flavorings. For food, this is like the sour version of salt. It’s very strong and should be treated similarly to salt but for sourness. A tiny pinch will increase sourness in a very oddly pure sour manner that will taste very strange without the right spices and flavorings; normally you’d want to use lemon juice for sour because it has other flavors in it that taste more natural, and citrus juice is what people are used to anyway. So for example adding pure sour to something usually only makes sense when it’s at least slightly sour to begin with (like it already has some tomato sauce in it). Citric acid is just sour and that’s it. This is very strange because absolutely nothing in nature is just plain sour with no other flavors. So with the right other flavorings it will act as a flavor enhancer, essentially, similar to salt. With no other flavorings, such as when one of the kids decided to try making “citric acid ade” with a tiny bit of it and some sugar, it isn’t going to taste very good. Also keep in mind that this stuff is 100% ACID. “Safe to eat” assumes it is heavily diluted and not spooned into your mouth at full strength. Do not try to eat a teaspoon of it or it will burn the skin off the inside of your mouth! That’s part of where it’s value for cleaning comes in.
