Really, it's just a big chunk of metal with some holes in it. It works by being a huge thermal mass, also known as a 'thermal reservoir'. If you don't know why you need to rapidly chill post-PCR samples, you're probably not interested in this block, so I'll skip the pedantics. It's well made - solid, clean, deburred - and the grid system is a nice touch. Four stars instead of five - for concerns over durability / chemical resistance. I nearly gave it three, but that maybe seems a bit harsh. The grid indices are the same color as the base metal, and the surface is not anodized - it's painted (you can probably tell by the overspray). So once the paint scuffs away, so will the row / colum indices. The paint strips quite easily with acetone (hardly touched it) - which is mildly frustrating. While I don't presently foresee any need to clean it with acetone - I use a lot of organic solvents around the lab. Spills happen. If it happens in contact with this, it'll become a sticky, stainy mess... Even isopropanol was able to strip away some of the blue - though I was a little aggressive with it (as aggressive as you can be with isopropanol and a kimwipe, anyway). Using a coating that is sensitive to organic solvents for a piece of lab equipment is kind of a bonehead move, but I can strip it entirely and be on my way. I'm much happier with a good piece of kit with a bad paint job than the other way 'round. Sample tubes fit well and the edges are all deburred. Surface treatment is a comparatively minor complaint.

I've used similar aluminum blocks for chilling 1.5mL tubes, and this product performs just as well for my PCR tube strips but at a fraction of the cost of those from common lab vendors. Simply storing the block in the fridge, it is good for about 1-2 hours from my experience, and even longer if kept on ice during experiments. I've also confirmed via digital thermometer that the block works equally well for heating tubes, serving as a makeshift heating block by placing it on a hotplate. As some have noted, you do need to be careful with using solvents around the block, as the coating does deteriorate with things like concentrated acetone. If that's a concern, I recommending just washing off the coating entirely, as it doesn't seem to add anything performance-wise (just holes machine drilled into an aluminum block). Overall, I really like this product and highly recommend!

Excellent cold block. Use it to keep samples at 4C or -20C during sample prep work with enzymes and other sensitive reagents. The thick silicone cozy keeps the block cold for an extended period of time and makes it a superior solution compared to similar - and more expensive - offerings from major scientific (Fisher, etc.). Stands up well to 70% Ethanol for sterilization and cleaning. Another reviewer here noted that the finish and numbers are damaged by other organic solvents, so please keep that in mind. However, for routine PCR/TC applications it and the cozy are not damaged by Ethanol. Experience: Ph.D. level scientist and engineer.

Thirty minutes in the freezer and this feels ice cold an hour after taking it out. There is a silicone cover included. I put it on when it gets out of the deep freeze. Makes it easier to handle and likely extends the optimum temperature.

Note that it comes with a silicone cradle, not readily apparent from looking at the add. I assume that it not only helps keep the temperature stable for longer, but it also keeps heat from your hands from warming it up too.
